So Sonic Mania is finally here, and I thought it would be best if I do what I always do with games and make a comparison video for it. Here I compare Sonic Mania with its past retro predecessors, that being Sonic 1 (1991), Sonic 2 (1992), Sonic CD (1993) and Sonic 3 & Knuckles (1994). The way it will be layered out is as followed:

I do like what they've done with Greenhill in Mania, the nice added caves to the backgrounds and the underwater caverns included like the Master System version.

Sonic 3 and Mania has the best music
All are great games. Sonic 1 was when they were getting their footing. The problem stage for most was Labyrinth Zone with the layout and enemy placement. Sonic 1 played a lot more like a traditional platformer with some speed added. The stages were probably the most difficult too (the bosses weren't so bad though).
Sonic 2 was when they improved on Sonic 1. They gave you a spin dash which helped you keep momentum better and had better level design overall to compensate. Most people complained about the special stages feeling somewhat cheap and Metropolis zone along with the final boss feeling a bit cheap. It was still a wonderful game.
Sonic CD gave you a spin dash and a running ability along with some neat concepts like the time element. Many people loved this game overall but some didn't care for the stage design and felt the game was too easy compared to the others. Still an excellent game.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles took Sonic 2 and expanded upon it. Each zone felt so elaborate and there was so much to explore. They gave each character different abilities and you had a variety of stages with some great transitions between zones. On top of that you got a different playthrough if you used Knuckles and he also has a harder playthrough to boot. It was an all around excellent game and most probably consider it the magnum opus of Sonic games.
Sonic Mania upped the sprites and remixed many of the old levels while giving us some new great ones like Mirage Saloon. It had a lot of things to unlock as well and you could go super with all three characters (Tails needed super emeralds before). It had great music like the rest of the series. The main complaints about this one were some of the bosses feeling gimmicky and too much blue sphere.
They are all great games though and I recently discussed exactly this. It's like being a kid again watching these great classics!

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still the best in the series for me personally I would love to see Christian Whitehead make an updated version for it as he did with Sonic 1 and 2 with the widescreens support. Sonic Mania had Great level design and length but something about Sonic 3 and Knuckles background stage story was just damn epic. I feel if sonic mania didn't rely on old levels so much and had way more new levels it would have taken the cake for me
Agree completely. I love Sonic Mania and would love a second game but Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still the best 2d Sonic in my opinion.
Certainly, 3K was more cohesive. Mania was a great fan-service game, with some better features and others worse. The boss fight design was a little poor in some cases in Mania, you can tell the game was rushed a bit. It doesn't show it here, but the backgrounds on Lava Reef in some parts are also superior in 3K.

the remakes of lava reef, flying battery, and and hydrocity (especially hydrocity omg) are superior.
Fernando Febles Flying battery and Hydrocity are debatable. In some cases seeming more like a level expansion pack. Lave Reef however was definitely inferior to the original. It added little notable that was new and destroyed the originals atmosphere and level design. The background in lava reef mania looks terrible in some areas

The wrong versions of Stardust speedway were used on the Sonic CD side. It should have been the past an the boss fight should have been in the present to properly match up with the Sonic mania footage. Best way to tell what Time should be used is by the platforms. in the past they are vines in the present they look to be made of brass. Sorry about the Nerdy nit pick lol
I am still sad that Sonic Mania did not choose Emerald Hill Zone as the first stage. Would have been a real troll move for Sonic to enter Green Hill Zone in the cutscene, only to be warped to Emerald Hill Zone instead.
Sonic 3 was my most favorite but i replayed sonic 2 and it sort of became my favorite one now

Compares mania to past games. Uses a mobile port of the games. Seriously I understand your desire for wide screen but this isn't even that legitimate of a comparison because of that, you should have made the video screens vertical to each other, and used the square, 90's genesis versions of the games.
Sonic CD 1993 has an annoying amount of problems that 2011 favorably fixed.

You already know what is the best 2d sonic game of all time sonic the hedgehog 3 and knuckles....let's not fake guys I know you all like hyper sonic super tails and hyper knuckles and sonic 3 and knuckles has really good features mania is kindah meh because it's kinda just plagiarism with all the stages and sometimes it has its own stages but sonic 3 and knuckles Acually makes sense they have cut scenes and this is the first game with a warp ring it may not be the first sonic game but it's the best 2d sonic game and sonic 2 was good exept for metropolis zone also sonic the hedgehog 2 is one of the 1st sonic games with super sonic sonic 3 and knuckles is one of the first times we see knuckles and we see two forms in one character sonic cd is one of the first times we see amy and sonIc mania is one of the first games that shows mighty and ray sonic mania is kinda like a celebrate of all the 2d sonic games but sonic the hedgehog 3 is still top tier buuuuuuut sonic 3 and knuckles wasn't just one game it is split into two games sonic the hedgehog 3 and sonic and knuckles two separate stages but if you put it together you will combine sonic the hedgehog 3+sonic and knuckles= the hedgehog 3 and knuckles

all the games were good, but sonic mania is just so much better u know
wish to tip my hat to Christian whitehead and the entire sonic mania team for making this possible. without them we wouldn't be at this juncture watching youtube video comparisons of sonic mania to other sonic games. considering largely positive reviews, it looks like sonic has a great future ahead of him. this can only mean one thing, future 2d genesis style sonic games. considering advances in technology long after the genesis era, those games can only get better. guys with Christian whitehead it looks like we've stumbled on a gold mine of future awesome sonic content. I think we are all in for a real treat.
for my furture wishlist, and probably everyone elses - unfinished business with sonic 3 and knuckles. Would like to see a whitehead version of sonic 3 complete - with lots of options to customize the experience i.e. adding in the squeeze machine boss for sonic 3 and knuckles or playing sonic 3 and k with sonic 1 and 2 sonic sprites. plus, would like to see whitehead for a future sonic project include the wood stage plus genocide city - the lost levels of sonic 2. maybe whitehead could include some of his work from his sonic projects before sonic mania - his sonic hack. maybe he could call it "sonic hack"
I would personally like to see an extension to Sonic 3&K or a new game involving the Multiplayer zones of sonic 3 made into full levels - like Chrome Gadget and Endless Mine. Some of the 8-bit games' levels would also be really interesting to see recreated
all of those are excellent suggestions inverted. I think your 8bit idea is awesome. sonic triple trouble, sonic chaos and sonic 2 for game gear had some excellent levels. we could see sonic hangglide again in 2d. I think I would also like to see an extension of sonic 3 and knuckles' hidden palace zone since the level was sooo short. basically grab some rings followed by the boss fight with knuckles. maybe a full level. perhaps in a twist on the original boss fight, sonic could fight METAL knuckles. that would be sweet.

why did you use the mobile version, sure white head improved 1&2 but you should have turned up its transparency so you cant see it, also use a computer emulator, or just in general, use a computer
