i've got an 89, first year for the first gens, wish it was a five speed, i still love her to death though, i'm 16, my grandpa passed down it to my dad, and my dad passed it down to me, i love it, so grateful

Me & my friend Terry were going for a ride in his 1989 1 Gen Dodge Cummins TD 5.9L W250 3/4 ton 4x4 5 speed with (roughly 620,000 k) we had to go to Western Star Trucks from Qualicum Beach B.C. to Campbell River B.C. on Vancouver Island & every time I hear him start out in 2nd thru them gears it was the best sound ever gives me chills too music to my ears!!! his cummins has a straight Pipe Exhaust with a 4 inch pipe on the end (NOT Stacks) that well Broken in Diesel Engine sounds just like a semi truck he even slapped the shifter 3rd Gear over to 5 Gear. (Now i'll tell you what happened earlier that day & why we had to go to Western Star) Terry owns to Western Star Trucks a 1985 Blue Western Star Dump Truck with Cummins Diesel Motor & 15 Speed Trans 2 speed rear end & a 2002 Western Star Highway Truck for haulin' Heavy Duty Loads it's got a sleeper Cab the Engine is a 3406 Cat Diesel rated 550 H.P. with a 18 speed & 2 speed rear end. +69ChevroletNova Thanks for watching! I'm going to have another couple videos like this coming out soon. make sure to subscribe and watch out for them!
This truck sounds amazing. We have a 1991 Dodge Ram 250 4x4 with an automatic. Its been our old farm truck since my dad drove it off the showroom floor! Its been beat to hell and back and still runs like a champ! Definitely tough trucks! I want one for myself, buts its very hard to find a decent one for cheap, and even harder to find em in 5 speeds manuals AND 4 wheel drive! Which is a must for our brutal Minnesota winters!
yea, the 5 speed 4x4 is a tough one to come by! good luck! if you have the money to pay the premium, check ebay. they have some nice trucks come up relatively often.
its compressor surge im pretty sure, not 100% though. the trucks sound like that if you floor it in an auto and completely let off the pedal, in a manual it happens while shifting at a higher rpm.
I'm in a process of taking a 1983 dodge w350 crew cab body off of it's original frame, and putting it onto a 1997 12v cummins 5 speed chassis. This video, and a few others are what keep me going haha
Love these 1994 and older Dodge D Series Pickups/Ramchargers. This interior is 1986-1994 model year for this truck and the old body style from 1972-1994 model and it is a good shape. Buzz sound is from older trucks to all the way through 1997 model year. I think this truck is a 1994 Dodge D250.
this is an 89 w350. this body style lasted until 1993, in 1994 they changed the body style to the much more common "second gen" style. D series is 2wd and W series is 4x4.
I could listen to this all day lol I lost my Cummins back in 09 to a dump truck that a red and turned her into a horseshoe on the passengers side :( I ended up wasting the insurance money on loose women and a Cheaper dodge gas truck. I think it's time to buy a new one lol.
Dream truck, i was gunna buy one but they have went up, old man has one in town i want, bet he will never sell it, id keep it stock just straight pipe it with nice tip, millon mile motor, the cheapest decent one run you about 10k to 12k.
When I did people's alignments; I'd come to them cross-eyed and say "Don't worry, I did your alignment my self!" I think whoever did his alignment wasn't joking...
+Cummins life the swap is done. I'm going to take pictures and do a full write up on the cummins forum for anyone else looking to do the same swap. It was pretty easy. 3.07 gears are a bit long for the truck but 20mpg is pretty great!
My dad has a 1989 cummins and I find it necessary to use first gear in most cases when starting. I'm not sure how low it has to be to be considered a granny gear but it doesn't seem that low to me. Now my 1966 Ford F250's first gear is definitely a granny gear. It's so low I hardly ever use it. To even go into first gear without badly grinding on it you have to come to a complete stop and sit with the clutch in for about a second.
That said when I've driven it it's normally loaded down with a heavy steel flatbed, loaded grain feeder, and hay bale carrier so that might be why I feel the need to use first gear.
You'll find one. just keep looking. craigslist, ebay, for sale section on cumminsforum. expect a low-end but functioning truck to go for $3-4000. good luck!
+Nick Rossow-Smith I don't even notice it. just push it into the next gear and keep going... the clutch travel is about a mile long too. i love it because it makes it super easy to push!
A strip of black electrical tape would solve that problem! I eventually grew blind to it, but everyone else that ever got in my truck mentioned it right away!
themadmailler Not necessarily. Rev matching helps with a smooth downshift (whether you're doing it to decelerate or accelerate.) It keeps the vehicle from lurching and protects the clutch from damage from unnecessary slipping. Has nothing to do with synchronization.

Great Video! This is my dream truck, I am currently 16 and turning 17 soon and I have just been curios to check on price ranges anywhere! I live in Ontario and I can't seem to find any 1st gen Cummins, do you have any suggestions on where to look for a truck like this!?!?! Thanks! :)
as far as canada, i have no idea. I found mine on craigslist. you can also consider looking into buying in the US and transporting it to your country. i don't know what legal BS would be involved in that though... good luck!
hey i have a question about your truck is 1st gear on your first gen a low gear for hauling which means you need to launch in 2nd gear or is it fairly long
+Shrapnel2448 1st gear is really only good for hauling or crawling slowly around a parking lot or over rough terrain. starting in 2nd in this truck is like starting in 1st in any other car or smaller truck.
Alexander Rosales Here in my country we have a official Dodge dealer, so there are a lot new rams over the road but a few old ones. Here a 2nd gen cummins costs around 10,000 - 15,000. But I ask because I was thinking to travel and buy one in the US to bring here.

They are. Search under "Braaap Stututuu"

+Adam Ye Same here lol. Nothing like a 12v Cummins.
Asmr lol
Literally doing that right now lol
Yeah it's sounds amazing but we both know that's a bullshit lie
the days when trucks were trucks, oh how I miss those days....
SteelCity1981 Yes! The days before they were just luxury family vehicles with a bed. This here is what we call a real truck.
@@austinwilliamson2920 depends on what year truck this was, because if it was a certain year it had electronics

very cool! keep in mind a 5-speed swap is possible!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how good this truck sounds…?
I love how mechanical the first and second gens are
Who did your alignment Ray Charles?
***** HAHA!! Thanks for the laugh! you can thank one of the numerous idiot previous owners for that shoddy job. it's not an alignment issue, the steering shaft was replaced and was not clocked correctly. it's getting fixed soon with a Borgeson shaft!

That's why it's getting fixed! it was pretty annoying.

Nice truck, can't go wrong with the first and second gens. I wouldn't trade my 3500 for the world.

love the truck, love the 5 speed and love the 12v. keep her on the road
+Aaron Schneider she's trailer trucking down to west virginia this weekend! stay tuned for hauling videos!
For the most part these are decent trucks. Semis are good with stacks, pickup trucks are good with side exhaust.
I just bought a 93 5 speed!! I’ve never driven a manual. But I’m getting there. I love my turbo spool and blowoff. I need to post videos of it.
Turbo bark sounds good!
thanks for watching!
themadmailler Thanks for uploading!
My husband and I purchased our baby girl a couple months ago and boy do we love that whistle 🥴
No, Stevie wonder did his alignment.
I put thsi video in my home theater sound system it was amazing
What an old behemoth - LOVE those old square bodied trucks!
I love these trucks. Hate when someone ruins them with stacks.
Stacks are nice on some trucks
Nah man stacks are stick on this. One of the few trucks that actually look somewhat good with stacks.
I wanted one of these trucks in high school. Dually with a manual!
70Kenny I have a 92 dually but sadly its an auto
I love that truck and the sound a first gen is my dream truck
From personal experience, the cool factor is 11 out of 10, but my 24 valve outperforms it by a longshot!

Doesn't anyone know what a granny gear is anymore.... i must be old
What is a granny gear?
extra low first gear.
My 1990 cummins has 4.10 gearing so 1st doesn't even go 5mph
My dad has a 1989 cummins and I find it necessary to use first gear in most cases when starting. I'm not sure how low it has to be to be considered a granny gear but it doesn't seem that low to me. How much horsepower does this cummins diesel engine have currently ?
I think my grandpa had a truck exactly like that
Imagine if a Lamborghini LM002 was powered by a Cummins 6BT instead of a thirsty V12...
Sweet ride!
Coming from a car guy I couldn't stand that throw on that shifter. So long!

Gen. What a cute term.😅 I bet some dodge boys have that tattooed on their arm.
Personally, I had it tattooed on my left buttcheek.
Why isnt he rev matching? I rev match in my 02 1500. I've seen a lot of videos out there saying it will damage your vehicle if you don't rev match
because i drive my synchronized 5 speed like a synchro'd 5 speed. If it's not a tractor trailer, you don't need to pretend that you're driving one.
Oh okay. My parents taught me that way, then I learned other stuff on youtube. I didn't know if it was necessary. Thanks for answering my question!
rev matching is needed on a non synchro'd transmission, but with the advent of synchronizers, they do the work for you. makes life a lot easier!
I only do it when I down shift. I can get into 3rd at 50mph no problem at about 2.5rmp
themadmailler Not necessarily. Rev matching helps with a smooth downshift (whether you're doing it to decelerate or accelerate.) It keeps the vehicle from lurching and protects the clutch from damage from unnecessary slipping. Has nothing to do with synchronization.
Amazing sound except for the rod knock

I wanna know where he bought that shirt.
Don't rest your hand on the gear shift!
How does the turbo make that sound when up shifting
Its turbo bark. It comes from not letting the turbo wind down before you let off the throttle.
Wow there's alot of throw between those gears
you really row your way through with this transmission!
I added it to favorites :]
