    Me & my friend Terry were going for a ride in his 1989 1 Gen Dodge Cummins TD 5.9L W250 3/4 ton 4x4 5 speed with (roughly 620,000 k) we had to go to Western Star Trucks from Qualicum Beach B.C. to Campbell River B.C. on Vancouver Island & every time I hear him start out in 2nd thru them gears it was the best sound ever gives me chills too music to my ears!!! his cummins has a straight Pipe Exhaust with a 4 inch pipe on the end (NOT Stacks) that well Broken in Diesel Engine sounds just like a semi truck he even slapped the shifter 3rd Gear over to 5 Gear. (Now i'll tell you what happened earlier that day & why we had to go to Western Star) Terry owns to Western Star Trucks a 1985 Blue Western Star Dump Truck with Cummins Diesel Motor & 15 Speed Trans 2 speed rear end & a 2002 Western Star Highway Truck for haulin' Heavy Duty Loads it's got a sleeper Cab the Engine is a 3406 Cat Diesel rated 550 H.P. with a 18 speed & 2 speed rear end. So we were hauling Gravel in a Belly Dumper to Terry & Vicky's (his wife) farm last Load to, when we pulled out onto the New highway at the Horn Lake road turn off his Clutch was working fine then when we got down to the Qualicum Beach/Port Alberni intersection his Clutch Pedal wasn't working was I scared no way haha Terry drove truck for a long time. so he geared it down without the clutch to try beating the red light no dice awe (either that or he could Push the cars outta his way LOL) so we went south & go up the Port alberni Highway & find a turn off/gravel road. parked it there for about a week Ya a week it took a while for the clutch Pedal Link rod to be ordered. so Terry called his son Tage to come with the Only Truck with Terry's Tools can ya guess the Mighty Dodge Cummins Sweet Oh & at the Gas station a Guy had his 1 Gen 1992 or 93 Dodge Cummins too that was pretty cool. Later guys best story of my life well one of them :D Love the sound of the Dodge Never Gets Old ;)

Its been beat to hell and back and still runs like a champ! Definitely tough trucks! I want one for myself, buts its very hard to find a decent one for cheap, and even harder to find em in 5 speeds manuals AND 4 wheel drive! Which is a must for our brutal Minnesota winters!

      @redtra236 Před 6 lety +4

      My dad has a 1989 cummins and I find it necessary to use first gear in most cases when starting. I'm not sure how low it has to be to be considered a granny gear but it doesn't seem that low to me. Now my 1966 Ford F250's first gear is definitely a granny gear. It's so low I hardly ever use it. To even go into first gear without badly grinding on it you have to come to a complete stop and sit with the clutch in for about a second.

    • @redtra236
      @redtra236 Před 6 lety +1

      That said when I've driven it it's normally loaded down with a heavy steel flatbed, loaded grain feeder, and hay bale carrier so that might be why I feel the need to use first gear.

    Why isnt he rev matching? I rev match in my 02 1500. I've seen a lot of videos out there saying it will damage your vehicle if you don't rev match

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 7 lety +2

      because i drive my synchronized 5 speed like a synchro'd 5 speed. If it's not a tractor trailer, you don't need to pretend that you're driving one.

      @enriquetorres9213 Před 7 lety

      Oh okay. My parents taught me that way, then I learned other stuff on youtube. I didn't know if it was necessary. Thanks for answering my question!

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 7 lety

      rev matching is needed on a non synchro'd transmission, but with the advent of synchronizers, they do the work for you. makes life a lot easier!

    • @enriquetorres9213
      @enriquetorres9213 Před 7 lety

      I only do it when I down shift. I can get into 3rd at 50mph no problem at about 2.5rmp

    • @cumulo25
      @cumulo25 Před 7 lety

      themadmailler Not necessarily. Rev matching helps with a smooth downshift (whether you're doing it to decelerate or accelerate.) It keeps the vehicle from lurching and protects the clutch from damage from unnecessary slipping. Has nothing to do with synchronization.

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 9 lety +1

      if it's a cummins motor originally in it, you're wasting your time! stay with the VE pumped 12 valve and it'll last forever with minimal problems and plenty of power.

    • @44boman

      Its turbo bark. It comes from not letting the turbo wind down before you let off the throttle.

    Great Video! This is my dream truck, I am currently 16 and turning 17 soon and I have just been curios to check on price ranges anywhere! I live in Ontario and I can't seem to find any 1st gen Cummins, do you have any suggestions on where to look for a truck like this!?!?!
    Thanks! :)

      @themadmailler  Před 9 lety +1

      as far as canada, i have no idea. I found mine on craigslist. you can also consider looking into buying in the US and transporting it to your country. i don't know what legal BS would be involved in that though... good luck!

  • @Shrapnel-sq2uk
    @Shrapnel-sq2uk Před 8 lety

    hey i have a question about your truck is 1st gear on your first gen a low gear for hauling which means you need to launch in 2nd gear or is it fairly long

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 8 lety +1

      +Shrapnel2448 1st gear is really only good for hauling or crawling slowly around a parking lot or over rough terrain. starting in 2nd in this truck is like starting in 1st in any other car or smaller truck.

      @TheM-M Před 7 lety

      Alexander Rosales Here in my country we have a official Dodge dealer, so there are a lot new rams over the road but a few old ones. Here a 2nd gen cummins costs around 10,000 - 15,000. But I ask because I was thinking to travel and buy one in the US to bring here.
