    ========= Wehrmacht LYRICS ==========
    Pulled into war to serve a vision that’s supposed to last a thousand years
    Part of a machine unstoppable, as merciless as tidal waves
    Were they the victims of the time, or proud parts of larger goals?
    Propaganda of the Reich, masterful machine
    Time and again the battle rages on beyond the gates of misery
    As casualties rise and millions die around them did they see it all?
    Crazy madmen on a leash, or young men who lost their way?
    Grand illusions of the Reich may seem real at times
    Panzers on a line form the Wehrmacht’s spine
    Lethal grand design
    What about the men executing orders?
    Ad victoriam
    Ex machina
    Non sibi sed patriae
    Pulled into war to serve a vision that just didn’t last a thousand years
    Part of a machine, though stoppable, as merciless as tidal waves
    ========= Historic Fact ==========
    Openly ignoring the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, in 1935, Hitler formed the new German Wehrmacht, which was made up of the army, the Kriegsmarine and the newly established Luftwaffe. From a force of 100,000 men in 1933, the army increased to 2.6 million in 1936.

      Hi, not sure if this will reach the band or not, but I wrote a fantasy book which partly follows the difficulty of leadership and conducting war on a major scale.
      While many of the more intense battles and moments were written while listening to metal. The song Wolfpack actually inspired its own add-on entirely, "Battle of the Fog." Two advanced, well equiped, and well armored steam ships are targeted by a sail driven dreadnought and a litter of smaller vessels. The latter group has planning, numbers and the night on thier side. The entire story follows the steamship's bridge crew and one of her gun turret crews.
      At the end of the add on I wanted to give credit to the song and to Sabaton for creating it. The book it will be published, just like it's predecessor.
      I have read up on the origional skirmish that Wolfpack was about and I did not want to offend, so I would like to mention it now...
      and say thank you for the inspiration!

    What I find so compelling about this song is that the chorus so vividly paints the message of the entire song. As the booming voices of propaganda shout at us the image that the high command wanted us to see “Panzers on a line, form the Wehrmacht’s spine” it drowns out the singer who says “what about the men executing orders?”. It’s like the singer asks “what of the men?” And the shouting voice of propaganda is to say “don’t think of the men. Think of the machine. Think of the mighty panzer. Think of the image. Think of the vision. Think of the goal. The men are only parts of that.” And yet the singer still proclaims: “what about the men?”.

    A really cool trend I've noticed with Sabaton songs- when a piece is about the Allies (To Hell and Back, Attack of the Dead Men, Primo Victoria, Defence of Moscow, etc) it fills the listener with hope and courage, inspiring them to rise against the crushing odds.
    When a song is about the Axis (Bismarck, Wehrmacht, Stormtroopers, Ghost Division, etc) it gives the listener an absolute adrenaline pump and makes them feel like an unstoppable juggernaut of war. In this case, YOU are the crushing odds!

    This might be a place as good as any other to write this down: My great grandfather (the biological father of my grandma) fought in the Wehrmacht as many German men did. He wrote a lot of letters home and man Grandma still has a lot of them. In the fist years of the war he was a part of the coccupying force in France. He loved photography, and send a lot of pictures, so the letters read basically like a big adventurious vacation. He never was a full convinced Fascist but he war very patriotic, loved the uniforms, the comradery and showing off for the girls.
    In the later years of the war, he was re-deployed to the Eastern front, where he saw (and let's be honest also did) a lot of messy shit. My Grandma keeps this part of the letters always very close hidden and doesn't like to show them around. In 1944, in one of the most impressive passages he writes: "I pray, the Germany wins this war. Because if we lose, they will take revenge on us. I know, what we have done, they have every right to hate and noone will be able to protect you fro their rightious anger, if we los." He was killed soon after and never returned home. It haunts me till this day.
    He was a controversial man in an problematic time but in this passage, I feel so much for him. I am happy and greatful for two things: For the fact that Germany lost and is a free country today and for the fact, that my great grandfather was wrong and the world forgave us. Everything is fine in this song. Powerful guitar beats at the beginning, which personify the power of the Wehrmacht, with which he marched through Europe and the USSR. Couplets that are reflections of a simple, sober-minded person about the Wehrmacht and the propaganda of the Third Reich. The refrain, where those very reflections are drowned out by propaganda cries about the power of German tanks and only a person asks a question about ordinary soldiers, propaganda again bends its line. It's hard to believe that all this was transmitted through a 4-minute song. Sabaton - you are geniuses!

    German MP40 "Maschinenpistole.40" submachine gun,.40 caliber. General History The Maschinenpistole 40, commonly known as the MP40, is similar to the Thompson, but uses a smaller 9-mm round. This submachine gun evolved out of the MP38, which was prone to misfirings that had sometimes lethal results. A simple technical innovation to the hammer eliminated the problem, and the MP40 was born. Total production is unknown but it is believed that more that one million of these weapons were produced between 1940 and 1944.

It talks about the psychology of people and crazy situations that can lead people down a dark path. A real gut punch of reality if you think everyone is just so much more virtuous than the people that did that job and others like it across the world during ww2. Including yourself. If we don't understand history and psychology of mankind we are doomed to repeat it.

    After hearing the speeches from the man with the funny lip fuzz, one would presume that fuzzy lips' oratory skills lead those to believe his butter smooth honeyed words to be true. Now how hard core was a soldier, one can't know for certain, as war really changes a man once they have served. Having relatives who have served in WW2 and there experiences of being either an early enlistee, being a British or French trained pilot or an average enlistee Screaming Eagle, war changed them from what they where in the beginning. Since there are fewer WW2 remaining veterans, we'll rarely know the truest extent of what hell they had gone through on both sides of the conflict.

Germany was fucked badly by France and the others and because of that desperation they started the second war and got a leader who was from the beginning kind of insane. It did not started as "yeah get me some gas and a couple of Jews" but rather was turned that way when the war went on. Plus not everyone fought for the idiology. But for their country.
