"VLA" is not a satellite array. The acronym stands for "Very Large Aperture". Main function: spacecraft tracking and radio astronomy.
I was at the Very Large Array 6 years ago....I spent all day at the visitor"s area, they allowed me to get an up close view of everything, including the custom built locomotive that transports those dishes to their spots...
I have it on good authority that the antenna array always monitors for the next RVerTV video.
Indeed , RVerTV - Best In the West .
Thank you for sharing.....thank you for taking the time.
The VLA is on my Bucket List!!! Great video, Russ!!!
Yes that ancient city is very cool. Am excited about this video. Didn't know there was an array that close to go visit.
Now we know what to expect when we go that way. Keep the videos coming.
Keep these enjoyable videos coming!
Magdalena is famous for the fine crystallized mineral specimens that had been recovered from the surrounding mines. Especially the pale pink Fluorites. Those mines are depleted now.
Mmmmmm, we traveled that way 2 yrs ago. Pie town, best there is. NM apple pie has some jalapenos in it &berry just like a fresh handful. Dital, gas-corner store-restaurant has wonderful burgers via grind their own fresh meat. VLR, outstanding. There is the nicest little BLM campground that was $2 with our Senior Card. We rode a road/forestery road/road again where we came across old Adobe houses. There was a church also that was small Adobe, enlarged with straw bricks, then over wood they stuccoed. We love having a basecamp to explore from for a few days. Socorro was where we were hauled to when our wheel severed off our 16ft tt. Memorable trip in many ways. Love your vids. We are 72y/o, stuck at our home in Alabama. So wanting to travel. Thanks for letting up armchair.
Hello young man. I follow along on your drives. I have my Google maps open on the IPad and check out the towns you go through. Even do street views if allowed. Cool to see how different people in small towns live. Nice to look around the towns that are a few blocks either side of the main roads. Safe travels
Fantastic views! Thanks Russ👍
I really enjoy watching so many magnificent places. Thank you so much! Soon I will drive those roads.
NM ,AZ and Idaho have incredible landscapes
What about Utah?
@@maricarmenvalladares8795 Nope. Hehe
😣
@@maricarmenvalladares8795 it's rather mild and padantif in comparison
I don't know what padantif means.
Thank you for another great adventure. My wife really enjoys your channel. 👏🏼
Another great vid for us oldtimers. The end of today's vid is on a stretch of 40 miles of straight as a string highway. looking forward to the next vid and looking forward to Springerville. Thanks again for reviving old memories.
Good day Russ ,nice trip west out of Texas .I was surprised at all the things to see on this road .👍👍😊😊✌. See Ya .
Thanks Russ..Be safe. Peace
Russ- to bad the V.L.A. was closed it is very interesting!
THANKS
Route 60 is my favorite highway in NM.... from Socorro to Datil (pronounced ' DATTLE' , to Pie Town, Quemado, etc.
And if you drive this stretch at night in the Winter, with all the craters and mountains, it is honestly like driving on the Moon....you seldom see another car and the stars are HUGE. A big win.
Great ride. Thanks! Be safe!
Thanks Russ! I love to see your drive today. It's beautiful country. :-)
Great talk and the VLA was interesting.
Enjoyed the ride along as always. Love small town America. Be safe. 😊👍
Thanks bro
I’ve done this same trip and have a nice picture of the VLA. I have 10 of them in a row.
Thank you Russ for the travels 🙏👍👏
US 60 is a great drive. Last year I drove it from Sikeston Missouri to it's end at i-10 in Arizona. I actually stopped in Socorro for the night and watched to Super Bowl in my hotel. Great ride. Love your videos.
Sure enjoyed your drone shot with the train passing thru. Enjoyed your Socorro stop. (They have a good college there - NM Institute of Mining & Technogy). Happy trails & safe travels Russ ☆☆☆
There was suppose to be a fine mineral collection at that Tech College. I was there in 1993 and made a special effort to see it. Very disappointing. It was in disarray and many of the specimens were missing :( Looked like it had been totally neglected.
Hello Russ yep pretty cool see ya next time
Great! Thanks!!!
Socorro-the home of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
Great ride! Talk soon!! Cheers!!!
Good road trip
Yay
Also the VLA (very large array) has a nice museum and visitor center. Worth a trip.
We made a Western States trip last year - 5 months. VLA was my favorite site. You can almost touch the universe! It's a shame you couldn't go inside.
We went there a couple of years ago and took the tour. It was great. Also, you should of gone thru Pie Town, did you stop? Nice place to pick up some pie. Also going that way you should go to Big Lake up above Springerville. Wonderful place to camp and spend a few days.
That is a cool place. The gift store and museum are only open 1 day a month (before pandemic). It's fascinating! We stumbled upon it last year. The movie "Contact" with Jody Foster was filmed there.
Good way to get a phone signal Russ!
13.27 That must be the old Sands motel lol
A drone shot closer to the dishes would have been cool..but nice shots
Good video, too bad the VLA was closed would have been real interesting, hey Russ what kind of trees or plants are those along the road there are a lot of them, and not very tall, keep the wheels rolling 😀
Looks like Junipers
A macrowave, can cook meals in miliseconds!
Crossed several times Russ, and you right it was change for the good. It was April or Nov. In Nov. you really had to watch the weather. No or little traffic was nice, you could look around. And see something other then trucks ahead of you. Hahaha thanks Russ beautiful video and thanks for sharing.
🙋♀️Hello Russ! This was a wonderful day! Some of the landscape does favor Arizona. Haze laying along those mountains in the back. Probably from all the fires. We had the haboob hovering over us a few days ago. It was hazy like your mountains all around me. I am in the mountains. We were under a code orange for air quality. We may have a 2nd wave of it this week-weekend. No parades here Saturday. Our 'lil town puts off some beautiful fireworks. I hope you get some rest Russ, you sounded tired in your voice. I really enjoyed your video. Would like to know more about Array. Interesting. 👍
Was stationed at Holloman AFB (Alamogordo) during much of the eighties. As far as camping goes, the Forest Service has this neat thing called "dispersed camping", where you could park up to 300 feet (it was 100 ft in the eighties) off of an established road and set up camp. Parked my pickup camper all over the Lincoln and Gila NF's. No charge and, of course, no services. I'd advise checking with a local ranger station prior to pulling off the road. Currently (2021), the Lincoln has no restrictions, the Gila has some restrictions, and none of the NF's here in California (where I live) allow camping outside of established campgrounds.
I am likely visiting the Very Great Array early next month, thanks for the preview 👍
Russ, I was in Magdalena over 20 years ago it was supposed to be an up-and-coming artist community I swear when you drove through there it has not changed at all. Mexico is known as the land of enchantment, The locals told me if I didn’t have a good business what I moved to there that I would be in trouble and it would no longer be the land of enchantment it would be the land of entrapment lol.
Great video thanks
The name of the state is *New Mexico. "Mexico" is another country.
Beautiful
man Russ, missed opportunity for drone shots at the ruins & the array. Bet both would be pretty cool from the air.
get HBO from Pluto with that satellite array.
The array is Y-shaped and they can move 'm around on those railroad tracks indeed. The outer dishes are i believe about 20 miles apart from each other. I loved visiting the VLA, been there twice. Pity you couldn't get in cos it's really cool, and you can walk up right to one of those huges dishes. Movies that are filmed there are 'Contact' with Jody Foster and 'The Year We Made Contact' with Roy Scheider.
Communications with spacecraft to distant planets. Waste of billions of dollars to "look for life" on Mars, a NASA hobby.🤣🤣
Lol i was waiting, till you said there not open right now. They use radio waves to look at and listen to the heavens. I have always wanted to see the in person. Now that i am closer. I shall. Great drive mr. Russ.👍👽😛
That's how ET phoned home.
I Hear You... ;)
Interesting. You are within a few miles of my home. That is the BNSF railroad.
3:57 - last time i saw a train that long was in Fort Madison, IA. It took 12 minutes to pass..i was mezmerized!
12:18 All the cool stuff you show us and being cooped up for 4 months all I want is to go to China Best Buffet...mmm buffet.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that. Haha
Did you see Jodie Foster as you were passing through at the VLA (Radio 'Telescopes' ) ? :) She was the main actor in the film Contact based on a science fiction novel by Carl Sagen.

Tried to spot the satellite dishes on Google map, but they apparently haven't needed a update in the area. But I did find the pad to the one you stopped at and the railroad tracks where they crossed the highway. Nice trip. Never seen that part of New Mexico. Thanks Russ
PUT ONE OF THOSE ON THE "BEAST" !! YOU'LL HAVE SERVICE!!
😃
I wish you would have follow the train with your drone. That will makes a great shot to video the train from the top into the cut of the hill.
Next time in NM you gotta go through Northern NM.
Bummer the VLA Visitor's Center was closed. It does a lovely job of explaining the science they are doing and how they do it. At least you got to see one of the antenna up close. Yes, it is radio astronomy. And I just read their Visitors Center Guide. They probably would not have allowed you to film there. They are very protective of avoiding any stray radio signals that will damage the very faint radio signals they are trying to pick up. But the real science information is interesting.

It’s now open for visitors Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday
You get as excited as I do to see a dollar store!
I've done this amazing route, but coming the opposite direction from Gila. It's beautiful! Stopped to freshen up in Socorro too.
VLA is for radio astronomy. I believe it was featured in Carl Sagan's Cosmos.
too bad the array wasnt open, interesting self guided tour
i wa able to use the VLA once, on a full spiral and focus..i got a Fleetwood Mac vieo.
I wasn't unhappy.
Yeah, but can it pick up RVerTV on Roku?
👍
If Magdalena didn’t have a Dollar General it wouldn’t really be town, would it?That array looked like it would be really cool to visit.
Hey Russ. Really enjoy your videos! Not sure if you use it or not, but the GasBuddy app helps to locate the nearest and cheapest fuel in the are you are in. Makes it pretty easy to find fuel anywhere you happen to be travelling. Keep up the great videos so that we can live vicariously through you until we hit the road! Stay safe my friend!
Wonder if they use goats keep overgrowth to minimum. Silos in Concord used Reindeer before goats. Maybe now cattle. Park of that decommissioned area in SF Bay Area is now park system?!
I'm thinking these are the dishes in the movie ''Contact '' with Jodie Foster.
I wanna take rt 60 from VA to Brenda Arizona!
After watching the entire video I noticed the fuel prices 😮 I knew they dropped in this area more than most! I think Texas gas and diesel dropped below $1.00 a gallon 😊 I was in Pennsylvania during the whole thing, PA and NY State didn't drop the prices much, the normal was around $3.90 for gas and $4.00 for diesel the lowest I saw it during Covid was in the High $2.90-$3.50 range it was still a great break but not like around here. My wife and I should have gone full time back then we could have traveled 10x more area for the same Fuel cost.
This had to be during Covid or at the end, absolutely no one on the highways! I wish I could tow my camper to my next destination with the highway looking like a post apocalyptic event happened
What are they looking for with those radio telescopes?
Contact Life in Deep Space , No Netflix / HBO . Adios Amigo .
Communications with spacecraft to distant planets.
You missed a lot by not going to the visitors center it is a fantastic place. Look out into space light years from earth.
i live hour soth from Socorro,87901,,,,you missed hot springs and lake and Day tubing -raft down river,,
I drove all thru that area when I lived in El Paso.
All I can remember is the Jack Rabbits jumping in front of my car committing suicide
Alpha Centauri calling RVerTV - Alpha Centauri calling RVerTV, Russ we hear and see you fine on the Frequency. Request you to continue to send information of your planet in preparation of our visit. See You Soon!
What drones you flying?
20:48 someone turned the words "MILES" in MILFS. Also the word Annually at the top and a word that starts with S was modified. Am I the only sick puppy here?
cool I am bummed out I will ruin everybody's fun don't want to do that.
