  • Spring traditions in Czech republic don't stop at Easter! If you've never experienced a Czech witch burning, then this video is for you! It's the perfect way to wish away winter's evil spirits and welcome spring. (And this winter in particular needs to land in the dustbin of history, am I right??) If you're in the Czech republic next year on April 30, don't miss a witch burning festival!!

Boys from each village must guard their own májka and try to cut the neighbours village's, as it is a great pride for boys if májka is still standing in the end of may, when there is another celebration "kácení mája" ("cutting of maypole") and of course it's a terrible shame for the whole village if it gets cut down prematurely.

Morena se nejčastěji shazuje z mostu do řeky aby ji proud odnesl pryč a s ní i zimu.... Jinak Vám strašně fandím, jste skvělá a držím palce. 👍👍👍🇨🇿💛

Just a little side note in case nobody has mentioned it already. In the Czech Republic, we call Groundhog day "Hromnice". Groundhog Day with Bill Murray is titled as "Na Hromnice o den vice (translated loosely as "One more day at Groundhog day".)

While you're quite diplomatic and mild in your description of xenophobia and other negative effects of this pandemic which brings out the best and the worst in the people, I think that you're getting "the hang of it", as we say in Virginia...Love your accent-reminds me of my sons (born in the USA) when we go back and they're trying to communicate in Czech...please, keep doing the videos for the communication is the best way to bring the World together. I fail to see how the quarantine can lead to xenophobia. Xenophobia is a fear of the unknown, not a measure to slow down an infection. If you know anything about the Czech culture, you should know we don't care much about a political correctness like some Western countries do. That doesn't mean Czechs are xenophobes. Try to distinguish between those two unrelated issues, thank you. It sound quite ignorant and insulting.

Burning of a witches was something new for me, as for a guy "from nowhere" (probably Andy Warhol's specification of the north-east Slovakia). Catholic church often absorbed pagan rituals. And this is probably one of them. It's not clear if Morena was pagan goddess or entity of "lower rank". I remember, when catholic priest told us: "Leave these pagan rituals".
He had three daughters and his family was quite taken aback by these habits in the beginning, which was strange for me, because he was from the same ethnic community, but they were from town, not from a small village. On the other side I remember "clash of a different slavic cultures". Some of relatives or friends practised easter whip, but in our region it was known maybe only from TV. Our tradition is: boys throw water over girls, no spanking. So some men explained this western tradition as act of aggressivity (and as attack against their wives, sisters, daughters...) - so reaction was not very friendly, bu often funny. :D And as I know now, it's not speciality only of some areas of eastern Slovakia - that traditions are different also in Czechia depending of area (Czechia is my new favourite word). :)

Měli jsme s sebou košťata, na která nám udělali technickou kontrolu, abychom "na nich mohli dál létat", a pak jsme chodili od stanoviště ke stanovišti a plnili úkoly, za které jsme nakonec dostali odměnu. Hi, Jennifer, Sir_Mac here, as always!
What a coincidence, 2nd February in the Czech republic, there is a feast called "Hromnice" (Wikipedia would tell you more about the roots), I pretty doubt that this day is somehow celebrated, though. But we have one proverb for that day, which is also connected with winter-spring overtaking. The proverb goes: "Na Hromnice musí skřivan vrznout, i kdyby měl zmrznout". Translated with using your Groundhog day would go: On Groundhog day the lark has to squeak / creak, even if he would has freezed.
And the real explanation of the proverb is pretty zoological / meteorological. If the lark (wood lark, tit lark) sings on the 2nd February, it means, there are no strong cold days and the spring is coming. If it doesn't, the winter hasn't ended yet.
I hope, Jennifer, you will return soon to the Czech republic, because the farmer markets (farmářské trhy) are open again and everything seems to go in the right direction. I would suggest you to call or search the Embassy of the Czech republic in Germany, which COVID test you need so you can return to the Czech republic without quarantine, if there is any ... :)
