- Spring traditions in Czech republic don't stop at Easter! If you've never experienced a Czech witch burning, then this video is for you! It's the perfect way to wish away winter's evil spirits and welcome spring. (And this winter in particular needs to land in the dustbin of history, am I right??) If you're in the Czech republic next year on April 30, don't miss a witch burning festival!!

Well, that’s me, Jen! 💁🏼♀️I’m an American living in Prague for the past 8 crazy years. 🤪What is living in Prague like? What are Czechs like? Is water really cheaper than beer? I’ll tell you all that and more. . .from an American perspective.

"We don't recommend non-czech beer".. :D yes I agree.
😜
"Slovaks seem to have some anger issues"
As a Slovak, I can confirm this
😂😂
But you also have a sense of humor when it comes to yourselves 😁
Absolutelly.
Godess of Winter and Death is like Terminator (actually if she were real, she would be like a real life terminator). Next year she will be back. So maybe it looks like a overkill, but not really.
Lovely video! :)
Btw Morena is a Czech tradition as well, also known as "vynášení zimy" or "vynášení smrtky", roughly translatable as "carrying the winter/death away (from the village), to celebrate the survival of another winter. :)
Figure of winter simbolized by woman (In Czechia called Morana) is pretty wildspread in slavic mythology. In Poland they have Mrazena, in Russia they call her Zimushka.
"she is hydrated, guys, she is fine" 🤣
I live in a small town near Moravia and even here we drive out the winter and welcome summer by throwing Moran into the river. It is true that only kindergarten children do it here. Adults burn witches, but we still do both traditions. Btw: great video and Jobs. :)
Thank you for watching1
Anecdotally, the same spring tradition was shown in Údolí včel. Have you seen it by chance?
Not only in Moravia. We used to do it as kids in Prokopske udoli in Prague.
@@DreamPrague Here in Olomouc, we were throwing moran into river Morava as kids too, I didn't knew, that this tradition is partly from Finland :D
Czechs have Morana too btw :)
Ah! I didn't know that!
@@DreamPrague I think it depends on the region whether we burn the witch or throw her into the water.
@@koucka.a.doucka Where are you from Markéta? I am from south Bohemia and I've never heard of Morana. lol
@@ondra10192 I am from Western Bohemia. We mostly burn witches here.
And they're also building ,,májka". A long, worked tree trunk this is is decorated on the tip. I love the atmosphere and tradition 😊✌️❤️
Thanks for the info!
You are welcome! 😊
@@DreamPrague Yah, and there could be two kinds of májka (maypole) - one is erected by boy/young man for his girl and possibly future bride, the second is erected for a village. Boys from each village must guard their own májka and try to cut the neighbours village's, as it is a great pride for boys if májka is still standing in the end of may, when there is another celebration "kácení mája" ("cutting of maypole") and of course it's a terrible shame for the whole village if it gets cut down prematurely.
Moc hezky propaguješ naší zemi, jsi velmi milá 👍😘
You know Jara Cimrman ❤️ how hard is it to understand what is this legendary man all about? 😁
It is very hard...I'm still trying to figure him out 😜
But you are on the good way 😀
Dream Prague I know, I mean, how creative one needs to be to invent a fictional inventor and playwright, and to pretend you are researching the said genius’ work :)
Dream Prague I've tried to explain Jara Cimrman to some foreign friends and they just didn't get it. It's just difficult to explain without experiencing it I guess. I'd love to see your take on the Maestro :-)
For anybody who hasn't got a clue who this legendary person could be, here's a brief introduction. You're welcome. 😃 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A1ra_Cimrman
Ahoj!
You know Jára Cimrman?😁 One day you must make a video about him 😂
Moranu palíme také na Moravě! Takže nejen na Slovensku.
Chybí ti tam máj/májka a hlídání máje! Ale jinak perfekt!
A tradiční májové průvody v krojích a tancem.
A taky kácení máje kdy se kromě Majky pak skácí i většina vesnických chlapů ;)
@@ZDrozd ty co porazili Máju v tomto čase by potřebovali na prdel
Love the Cowitch.
Cowitch 😂😂😂

I really liked when you said "...after moving to Central Europe,...". :)
It is a small detail, but much appreciated. ;)
In some parts of Germany they celebrate absolutely the same way as in Bohemia and Moravia and they even call it "burning witches" as well. I have personal experience with that from Saxony. ;)
Few years ago they showed satellite thermal picture of Europe from 30th april and there was clearly visible where people celebrate this - it was mostly Czechia and eastern Germany. It looks like Slovaks, Poles and Austrians don't celebrate this. But I remember in many places it was banned becuase of dry weather so maybe they celebrate that but they just couldn't burn fires.
I didn’t know and wouldn’t guess! Might be coming from shared prehistory? Saxony and parts of Eastern Germany were having slavic tribes - Venets, Venetians..., before they were germanized about 1000 ago. (only small pockets remained in the Lusatia)
@@petrskupa6292 making big fires on the 30.August is also gernanic tradition Walburga's night (but its also particaly based on Beltine) , here in Czech lands its more from Celtic Beltine tradition.

czechs drown morana as well, it was my favourite kindergarden activity
I am Czech living many years in Asia, your videos make me feel like coming back home !
Happy to hear that!
Jak je to s karanténou v Brně? :-)
Morena se nejčastěji shazuje z mostu do řeky aby ji proud odnesl pryč a s ní i zimu.... Jinak Vám strašně fandím, jste skvělá a držím palce. 👍👍👍🇨🇿💛
Bahahaha! 😂😂😂
I prefer kissing bellow a blossoming tree over being whipped any day (year).
Jen, neustále mě překvapuješ. Jsi super.
Palcuju, a zvonec už máš.
Our LO's doing a report in French on the Czech witch-burning custom and this video was super and hilarious. Head out to us in Caslav for Carodejnice. Would love to show the town's take on it! Thanks for the video.
Perfektní, přestaňte učit a začněte točit, jde Vám to skvěle!! :-)
Děkuji!
🤗
Well, this is a great video, not many Czechs know origin of this tradition so good! I love it, especially because of the historical reasons, it it is the oldest tradition continuously celebrated in czech lands - as you mentioned, since the celtic times. It is also connected with with 1st of May, the feast of love, after the midnight the pairs went to... ehm, searching the cherry tree :-)
Opět to vaše video nemá chybu!!! Paráda. :-))))
Complaining about Czech winter always cracks me up - it barely ever gets lower than -10C and even that usually lasts only for a few weeks.
Last time we had a proper winter was in like 2013.
Opět skvělé video!!! Zase jsem se něco naučil, díky Jen :-)
Wow thank you for your video❤️ s každým videem jsem chytřejší co se týče našich zvyků hidtorie etc. ❤️❤️❤️
So happy you recommended Beyond Meat! And I appreciate how much you’re interested in our culture!
Another great video, thanks.
It is quite interesting that in the time of Salem witch trials we had our most famous (and last big) witch trial in North Moravia (Šumperk and Velké Losiny)
I don't know if you are not preparing it for next video, but in my birth place we used to do "Maypole steeling" tradition much more often than "Witch burning"
Hope that you are fine in Germany
Another educational and entertaining video. Top notch!
Great Vlog on Cech Traditions. I am second generation but have 2nd cousins in Praha. My Cech

Jen, you have got a very nice channel here. I really enjoy your videos. I do appreciate how you introduce life in Czech Republic to the English speaking world. And you do so in an entertaining way. I really like your sense of humor. And hat down to your Czech language grasp.. which is very good and shows your respect to our country. Wish you the very best. May you live long and prosper !
Thanks for teaching me some czech traditions 😄 I think Ive never heard about Morena before.
Your channel is so entertaining I love it! I just started learning Czech and I hope to visit Prague in a couple of years (I know a lot of people say this and burn out after awhile so pray for me please) thank you for your videos🙃
Pray for you 😂-yes I've definitely hit some plateaus, but happy I kept going. Still much more work to do!
wau :-) super video !
If someone interested about history of burning witches, there is a hardcore movie named "Kladivo na čarodějnice" -Witchhammer-. It gaves you an idea how far it goes in 17. century. It based on book, inspired by real history in Šumperk area. When i was on a castle "Velké Losiny", i have a little shock, because movie story meet a story from past..
As ussual, Jen did a great research. Nice video. thx.
Love your vids! Keep em up! As a Slovak I loved the joke about anger issues :D
Thanks! 😃
Great, your knowledge is fantastic. BTW: I really like movie Groundhog Day very much :)

Haha yes I heard about this from Czech friend a long time ago. I was like, what??
So it's really true .
I really had to lough after watching your videos ( by the way , I love them all) that you call your dog Tobik. Is it because he looks like the Harry Potter's film creature ?
Very nice Dear. I have notes the bbq used in the story. It look like typical Californian park. Were did you film it? Thanks, I love your show.

They are!🙄
To je zase skvělé video, Jen :) A kdy bude zase české? Těším se :)
Ahoj Gabrielo! Brzy se vrátíme!
Just a little side note in case nobody has mentioned it already. In the Czech Republic, we call Groundhog day "Hromnice". Groundhog Day with Bill Murray is titled as "Na Hromnice o den vice (translated loosely as "One more day at Groundhog day".)
Keep up the great work with your channel!
Groundhog day! My most favourite movie!
It's a classic movie. In fact, I woke up yesterday (in quarantine) and thought to myself "I'm living in Groundhog dat"
😜
@@DreamPrague hell yes! I got 3 weeks groundhog day in my 1+kk
When our friends from Basingstoke, England, visited us some years ago, I had to explain them what the tradition of "pálení čarodějnic" is. So I said, "the Beltine fires", and it was clear to them. Thanks for your affirmation.
Aha! Glad I did the research correctly!🤓
Morena is a Czech tradition too. Kids throw her effigy into the river to welcome spring. The witch burning was not that widespread when I grew up.
I see from other comments that I missed the Czech aspect to Morena! I'll have to focus on her next year 😜
hospodář je český výraz pro farmáře
Hi, we have Morena to end winter... but burning witches is just burning witches :D We have both
Young couples who live in Prague are coming to Karel Hynek Macha statue on May 1st and kiss there in hope their love will last. Btw you find his statue in park on Petrin. These words knew everyone of my generation and generations of our fathers and grandfathers.

I've enjoyed your clips about Czech Republic. Thou I was born there and left for the US half a century ago, I'm still learning new things about the Country of my birth. While you're quite diplomatic and mild in your description of xenophobia and other negative effects of this pandemic which brings out the best and the worst in the people, I think that you're getting "the hang of it", as we say in Virginia...Love your accent-reminds me of my sons (born in the USA) when we go back and they're trying to communicate in Czech...please, keep doing the videos for the communication is the best way to bring the World together. I watched a few episodes you have produced and it reminds me of my beginnings in the US albeit very different. Wish you success and good luck. MS
Well, thank you very much! that's wonderful that your American-raised sons speak Czech. Good for them! Virginia is a beautiful part of the world, it was lucky to land there!🤗
I fail to see how the quarantine can lead to xenophobia. Xenophobia is a fear of the unknown, not a measure to slow down an infection. If you know anything about the Czech culture, you should know we don't care much about a political correctness like some Western countries do. That doesn't mean Czechs are xenophobes. Try to distinguish between those two unrelated issues, thank you. It sound quite ignorant and insulting.
@@juliannewarren5466 I wasn't referring specifically to the virus as I am new to the site. After viewing a few episodes initially, I was summarizing my observations and complementing on the author's production. After your comments however, I'm reminded of another, typically Czech habit...a quick, sometime unsubstantiated judgement.
Perhaps like many politicians you're suffering with Dunning-Kruger effect. It is a cognitive bias in which people assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is....
but nevertheless, living in fear is not what I would call living free.
@@milanjan7988 You have judged an entire nation without even setting foot on the Czech soil and you want to guilt trip me? You have no right to judge me and don't know what my personal views are. I responded to your unfounded accusations of millions of people. Yes, I'm a Czech patriot and foreigners shoving the verbal manure on the Czechs rub me in the wrong way.
If others are respectful, I'm respectful. If they are ignorant and judgmental, I will call them out.
Only one living in fear seems to be you. Try to visit other countries, talk to foreigners. It will ease your anxiety about the world outside and you will find out what is real and what isn't.
Dream Prague, TadyGavin, Anthony and other foreigners visited/lived in the Czech Republic and none have problems you seem to think exist. Main attitude is - you reap what you sew.

@@milanjan7988 I wanted to add one thing - I want to apologize if I sounded too harsh, but I have encountered many comments about my country that are not true recently and it's quite tiresome to repeat how things really work here over and over again.

Burning of a witches was something new for me, as for a guy "from nowhere" (probably Andy Warhol's specification of the north-east Slovakia). Catholic church often absorbed pagan rituals. And this is probably one of them. It's not clear if Morena was pagan goddess or entity of "lower rank". I remember, when catholic priest told us: "Leave these pagan rituals".
He had three daughters and his family was quite taken aback by these habits in the beginning, which was strange for me, because he was from the same ethnic community, but they were from town, not from a small village. On the other side I remember "clash of a different slavic cultures". Some of relatives or friends practised easter whip, but in our region it was known maybe only from TV. Our tradition is: boys throw water over girls, no spanking. So some men explained this western tradition as act of aggressivity (and as attack against their wives, sisters, daughters...) - so reaction was not very friendly, bu often funny. :D And as I know now, it's not speciality only of some areas of eastern Slovakia - that traditions are different also in Czechia depending of area (Czechia is my new favourite word). :)
😂Jj, hydrated ptetty good ❣️🤣😆😂
😜😂
Yeah .. we've got the Drowning of Morena here as well - - - - i'm sure M(r)s. Baccarin approves :)

To zní skvěle. Jako pohádka.🤗

Aha - Bealtaine!! As you say they had that in Ireland too. It remains the name of the month of May in the Irish language.
Hi, Jennifer, Sir_Mac here, as always!
What a coincidence, 2nd February in the Czech republic, there is a feast called "Hromnice" (Wikipedia would tell you more about the roots), I pretty doubt that this day is somehow celebrated, though. But we have one proverb for that day, which is also connected with winter-spring overtaking. The proverb goes: "Na Hromnice musí skřivan vrznout, i kdyby měl zmrznout". Translated with using your Groundhog day would go: On Groundhog day the lark has to squeak / creak, even if he would has freezed.
And the real explanation of the proverb is pretty zoological / meteorological. If the lark (wood lark, tit lark) sings on the 2nd February, it means, there are no strong cold days and the spring is coming. If it doesn't, the winter hasn't ended yet.
I hope, Jennifer, you will return soon to the Czech republic, because the farmer markets (farmářské trhy) are open again and everything seems to go in the right direction. I would suggest you to call or search the Embassy of the Czech republic in Germany, which COVID test you need so you can return to the Czech republic without quarantine, if there is any ... :)
