Jay Foreman has two great videos about the Tube map: "The Tube Map nearly looked very different", and "What went wrong with the Tube Map?"
With the great Jago Hazzard as Harry Beck
I feel like Jay needs to own some of these maps
And while you're there, just do yourself a favor and watch every Jay Foreman video ever.
I 100% expected Jay to be in this video. Kind of disappointing he isn't, ngl.
@@Marlosian Jay Foreman on Objectivity would be a WILD collab but I am 100% here for it.
Holy shit brady's getting in shape!
Living that Fit-o-tron 3000 lifestyle!
First I got excited for another Jay Foreman video, then realised it was an Objectivity video, and then I got to get excited all over again!
Same! 😄
I was hoping for an Objectivity video, with Jay Foreman.
I saw this notification and I thought, "Great, another video from Geoff or Jago". Imagine my delight to discover it's my CZcams worlds colliding! #GeoffMarshall #JagoHazzard
What impressed me most was that he managed to talk about Tube line mergers without mentioning the name... (altogether Jago fans).... *Charles Tyson Yerkes*
I figured the Objectivity guest would be one of these two, but was pleasantly surprised with another guest!
Jago Hazzard has a real nice video centered on Harry Beck and how he was treated rather poorly by management.
This is my new favorite episode. Thank you Chris for letting us take a peek at these wonderful artifacts, and thank you James and Brady for sharing them with us.
You look great Brady! Keep up the tennis.
Wow... Bradys is gettin fit AF hahaha
These are incredibly influential to graphic artists, up there with Swiss typography. +1 for Jay Foreman’s videos on the subject.
Quality video and beautiful maps! There is an interesting series on various London tube maps by Jay Foreman that is also worth checking out.
As an American visiting London, at age 19, when my parents showed me how to use the Underground map, then at age 23 being able to navigate pretty well and finally at age 27 with a friend, who I had to show how to read the map I was always impressed with the design of the modern map. Looking at the "spaghetti maps" is very interesting because I've never seen kind of the actual layout of the system.
Jago Hazzard should also have been here. You are the underground maps to my Objectivity.
I love London Underground maps. Jago Hazzard, Geoff Marshall and others have done videos of tube maps and how they were made when the London Underground was born. As it’s now 160 years old.
Map men map men map map map men men men men
I tensed up when you said "Gill". To describe Eric Gill's past as "slightly dubious" is … "incredibly generous". I'm glad he was incidental to the conversation.
Map Man, Map Man, Map Map Map Man Man Man
woot, i spent 23 whole minutes on tube maps?? i've never even been to london!
amazing episode, everything was just presented so well with just enough geeky interest but not overwhelming the casual viewer (me). great job, brady and chris!
You don't have to have experienced something to enjoy something. If you like documentaries about Space, you don't have to go to Space to enjoy learning about it.
The Beck design is the basis for transport maps all over the world... But there's one big exception: New York. They tried to introduce a London Underground inspired map multiple times in the 1960s and 70s, but they were all unpopular with passengers, so they switched back to a geographical map in 1979 and have stayed with that ever since.
16:57 - Mornington Crescent!
The London transport museum has so many cool maps and history
For a few seconds I had hope for a Map Men collaboration. Mr. Berry looked faintly like Mr. Foreman in the thumbnail. Still a great videos, those are some great objects.
i always find it fascinating about the tube, that people like Darwin, Jack the Ripper, T. E. Lawrence and others could have travelled on the tube
The fact that Brady meets someone in his life and then goes "Hey! we cant make a great video about this!" Shows that he has the journalist mindset. He pays attention to what is around him and runs with it, instead of just sticking with the same source forever.
This station stop is Objectivity. Change here for Underground Maps, Transit History, and Significant Objects. Please mind the gap between the train and the platform.
Looking at the large poster, it reminds me of my childhood fascination with the book "What do people do all day?" by Richard Scarry. Every page had a plethora of activity and detail. even now, I imagine I'd be lost for ages looking at it.
Cool artwork and great cinematography!
Damn, he's good! And now, a tennis match between Chris and Keith!
How can this video not deserve a "like"? Beautiful maps.
Perman! What a lovely map he made! And to see a copy opened for the 2nd time only... Thanks for sharing!
Great video, what a find! Thanks so much! Really appreciate maps and their history, railroads, and graphic designers and developers. This one covers them all! Superb!!
Absolutely fascinating history. Thank you ❤
Mornington Crescent!
Not on a non-lateral.
Adjudication, Humph?
@@DeathlyTired ...you guys are in spoon anyway. So go back to Kings Cross or something!
Brady: "I'd like to introduce you to Chris ..."
My (from the title) biased brain: "Nix from the London Transport Museum"
Brady: "Berry"
Woah, Brady, you've been hitting the gym. Looking very healthy!
This video was fantastic!
Great video as always
I've got quite a few versions of the beck mao over the years and an old metropolitan map along with a couple of issues of metroland that I've acquired over the years. That was a splendid and very accurate summation of the history of the underground map. Thankyou so much!
Jay Foreman of Mapmen(men(men)) seems to have some competition :D
I was expecting to see him in this video when I saw the title 😁
Men
I was expecting Geoff Marshall.
Judging by the fact that every comment is about him, I think we need to make an objectivity video Jay Foreman, at some point Brady
I've never been to London (and likely will never get there), but I've always been fascinated by the Underground.
Amazing that you made this video without inviting Geoff Marshall or a cameo Jago Hazzard voiceover at the end?
Geez Brady! The Fitotron 5000 lifestyle making you look Trim!
This was so interesting, and massive kudos to Mr. Harry Beck, his maps were an integral part of my childhood and teenage years growing up in London, mostly getting to music venues.
If there's something I love more than maps is Tube maps!
The Elizabeth "Line" isn't really an Underground line. It's part of the overground network and not part of the same fare system. You have to exit the Underground system and enter a completely different area to access it.
I see Brady has fully embraced the fit-o-tron lifestyle.
I don't know why, but after watching this video I am hungry for a bowl of pasta
I had a print of a different version of the Max Gill pictorial map. The wording around the edge was different to the version shown here. Alas, it was lost in a move.
I love maps.
somebody get the Map Men in here!
Map men map men map map map men men men...
Did Chris see Brady's legendary tennis shot?
7:28 They could have put the reference data in the upper right or lower right corner of the map without interfering with the line routes, so why didn't they? 🤔
I’ve caught trains in many cities all over the world, and nearly every city the train map looks similar to Harry Beck’s 1933 design.
Harry Beck... top fella
I guessed this would be with Geoff Marshall.
Does Chris know about the "Shot of the Century"?
Wow brady is looking good
Underground trains must have been a nightmare in the age of steam engines.
With the thumbnail I thought this was another episode of Map Men
No mention of Mornington Crescent? :)
Well, there is now (in the comments, anyway :) Besides, they may have been using Waltheof's Semi-Permanent Variation rules. Can't be sure...
But does Chris Berry know about "The tennis shot of the century"?
where does Elephant&Castle station name come from?
Once upon a time, there was this elephant living in a magnificent castle when suddenly . . . . . . Etc etc
I think it comes from the name of a local pub (correct me if I'm wrong).
As mentioned above, from the local pub. But before that the site was home to a blacksmith and cutler, and the crest of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers is an elephant with a castle on its back.
I actually prefer a mix between schematic and real maps.
Sure, remove all the intricate curves and such, straighten things out and fade the background. But i actually prefer to KNOW just how far apart stops are and whether i can choose one or the other and still be just as close to my final destination.
I hate google maps for this reason, it's excellent at showing the streets and whatnot but WHERE is the closest bus/tram/tube/boat etc? It doesn't have a way to highlight public transit, if it did that would have been an awesome map for when going places one doesn't normally go to.
And our public transport has two sets of maps, one "local" map (centered on the current stop or covering a region) where everything shows up and one that just shows the stops in a schematic layout.
I find myself looking at the real map more often than i do looking at the schematic map.
Now i need to play mini metro again
Thought this was gonna be a map men vid when I first clicked!
Nah, this subject is core Jago Hazzard territory.
My boyfriend is really into Tube maps and public transit designs so we watched this video together and now he's hooked on Objectivity. Thanks!
My feed hung as the vid started and (with a little blur) it looked like (Former) Prince Harry was presenting!
You can still be reproductions of the London Wonderground map.
Wait. This map men isn't a map men!
Wait. So once you're a "dealer" and sell maps, etc. you can no longer have a personal collection. Well that's just BS.
'Oh, you're a grocer? Well then, you aren't allowed to own any food now.'
ETA: "I'm not allowed to keep anything I have" later becomes "this is actually in my collection. This is a never sell". So which is it? Do you have a collection or not?
some maps are just ridiculous , like 10k for a tube map?
map men map men map map map men men men
9:49 There might not be a giant snake in Hyde Park. But you might find something a little but serpentine.
I prefer the geographical maps. Don't know why people fetishize the graphic design ones.
The lack of Jay Foreman in this video is disturbing.
Very interesting video, btw.
