My great-grandfather David Monroe Hadley (Pvt, Co G, 8th Louisiana) was firing from a prone position in the "Mule shoe" when he was struck in the right shoulder (where the neck and shoulder meet) by a minnie ball ranging downward. He was wounded on May 12, patched up and given a mule to ride home to Louisiana. He crossed the river around Greenville, Mississippi and finally got to CSA General Hospital near Shreveport. He rested there, then was given light duty around the hospital, then sent to "Absentee Camp" at Minden to be sent back to the war. Before that could happen, General Lee surrendered and the war was over.

God bless all those who fought in one of the bloodiest war in human history; nearly 720000 kia in "The American Civil War " 1861-65 . Carnage of greatest magnitude Evan by 2023 standards as gruesome / grim as it was , and still is !

This is where the Stonewall brigade pretty much met its end. They took heavy looses and were reduced to the size of about one regiment for the rest of the war. a great grand uncle of mine had been in the 27th Virginia. He died at third winchester about 11 months earlier. The flag (or one of the flags) of the 27th was captured at Spotsylvania.

Thanks for sharing the family story. Yes, Spotsy is pretty much the end of the Stonewall Brigade. They certainly saw some tough service in the war.

If there was ever a hell on earth, it could be the Mule Shoe.

I've heard a lot of tales about weird noises at the place, at the bloody angle especially. You ever heard anything or heard tell of anything?

Did the 2nd corps of the union army after the rebel counter attacks hold their ground at the bloody angle?

from Chris: "I was just out there again today, in fact. It's a beautiful spot, even if it was the site of such tragedy. I hope you've been able to visit there yourself."

It's a park now, not a battlefield. It looks much like any other park.
He explained the features of the historic battlefield very well.
If you want nothing but a silent view of the park by all means turn off the sound and simply gaze at the grass and trees.
