How you speak of this machine, is how my grandfather spoke of the "JUG ". He was a highly decorated P47 fighter pilot. WW2, Japan, Korea! 7 crash landings, 3 in enemy territory! Lived to tell the story!

Then.....there's the Eagle lol but don't downplay the Super Hornet. Thanks to its airframe geometry, it's the most versatile and one of the most capable fighters in the world. The theoretical mission portrayed in Top Gun: Maverick could only be accomplished by a super hornet in real life.

@@TheDukeOfDankness My best friend's dad was an Eagle driver in the 80s, in Germany. I'm telling you man, Top Gun was based off this guy. Tom Cruise was based off this guy, flew Eagles in the 80s, drove a BMW motorcyle, married a Cuban body builder. He was tickled that F22s replacement is....F15 lol Eagle guys love that they're not stealth. "oh, so you know I'm here, what're you and your dozen buddies going to do about it?" ;) 14 and 15 are two cuts of the same cloth lol

@@TheDukeOfDankness The guy is such a character. He's now in a think tank with other pilots consulting designers on next gen fighters. "What if we make the radar like X" and he's like "yeah, but then if I roll over and do Y, then we're gonna have a problem" etc. he's got such great stories.

Oh, so that’s what happened to the tomcat. I find it interesting and I don’t know if it’s just Hollywood that in top gun Maverick the current Navy fighter jet was made to seem like it’s inferior to other countries and that just shocked me.

Kind of. The original TF-30 engines were pure weak crap. I remember one test pilot testifying to Congress that the F-14 did not have enough power to get out of its own way. 1984, plans were announced to replace the existing TF-30 engines of the Tomcat with General Electric F110-GE-400 turbofans. IF I remember right.
