Though it is cheaper to produce a bill than a coin, the coin lasts way longer, so for a lower value, the coin worked better. The average lifespan of a bill by that time was between 1 and 3 years, and while the currency has changed many times in the last 40 years, my parents still have some coins as old as me (34 YO).
What’s funny though is how using it can sometimes result in you getting in trouble because of how uncommon it is, stores will sometimes think it’s a fake bill and will deny service or call the police because of “counterfeit money”
My great grandfather used to only tip with 2 dollar bills. When he passed away, all of 2 dollar bills were given to his children. So, when I went to my grandmother’s house I found she had $1500 worth of 2 dollar bills. Lucky for me, I found a star note that I got to keep.

They may have started reprinting them in the 70's, but they still print them to this day making all modern two dollar bills worth $2 (unless it's some kind of rare misprint).
