Corrosion Prevention - Lanotec - What To Use Where - Roothy

    For over 30 years I have been using Lanotec to prevent corrosion from destroying my trucks and as a general lubricant for pretty much everything. You only have to take a look at my old truck Milo in the National Motor Museum to see the benefits of Lanotec and my new truck Milo2 gets the same treatment.
    Unless you have swallowed the electronic 'snake oil' approach to preventing corrosion then you probably understand the benefits of Lanotec, but I get asked all the time what to use where. For my trucks I use Steel Seal on the chassis and any fixed underbody parts like the diff housing and steering arms, then for anything that is a moving part like the leaf springs and tie rods I use the Heavy Duty Lanotec. The difference is that the Steel Seal dries less tacky than the heavy Duty but is still able to seep into all the nooks and crannies where corrosion can hide, it doesn't dry completely so remains flexible and doesn't flake off.
    Oh, and do yourself a favour and grab one of the specially designed Lanotec pressure spray bottles to apply the liquid gold, they are capable of handling the thicker liquid without becoming blocked. BUT, that doesnlt mean that you just leave the Lanotec in the spray pack once your done, use a degreaser - ideally CITRAFORCE from Lanotec to flush it through.
    Typically I use about one and a half to two litres of Steel Seal at the start of each beach driving season to do the underbody. The most economical way to but any Lanotec product is in the bulk 20L drums that are available direct through the Roothy shop (roothy.com.au/products/lanote...) but if you are just looking to try it out you can grab a750ml spray pack.
    So come on, get real about corrosion prevention on your 4WD, caravan, trailer, bike or boat, Lanotec is tried, tested and used widely in some of the most corrosive environments on earth like oil rigs and pipelines, you don't see them relying on flashing lights and wires to protect their multi million dollar equipment from the elements, so why would you!

    I’ve used the GP product (Lanox) for over 15 years and swear by it for the rust prevention.
    I have also applied it to a sacrificial pin that drives the propellor on my pedal kayak. It’s made of high carbon steel so rusts at the smell of sea water. Its actual function on my kayak means it’s in the sea water every time I go out to kayak fish. I sprayed the HD stuff (Lanotec from the spray can) onto it two years ago and that pin hasn’t rusted or been re-coated since. It looks brand new. I swear by the qualities of both the GP and HD stuff!!

    Thanks for the video, very informative. I purchased a 5l container of steel seal and it clearly states on the back to avoid contact with rubber. Something to raise with Lanotec perhaps. Your experience suggests otherwise.

    Hi John, excellent video very interesting. I will follow your example and give the bottom of my Troopy some Lanolin love. I already bought lanolin in spray cans version unfortunately, you use a liquid in the ‘garden’ spray bottle. This looks much easier to use and you get to all the narrow places. What do think can I empty the spray bottles into the garden spray tool? And does it it need something added to make it liquid enough? Thanks for the advise.

    • @JOHNROOTHROOTHY
      @JOHNROOTHROOTHY  Před 3 lety

      There's no real issue with rubber and seal steal apart from it making it slippery. The pressure pack cans of Lanotec used a propellant that could damage rubber under some conditions, but not the 'pure' product you have. Hope that helps - and for my part, I just get under and spray everything!

    No doubt lanotech is good stuff but given how often I hit the tracks & beach (at least twice per week), it's simply not affordable. WD40 is $36 for 4lt & works just as well if you're like me & wash your rig after every trip.

    • @gqwarrior6694
      @gqwarrior6694 Před 3 lety

      @x My usual answer to a person making uninformed assumptions & accusations would be a simple "F U" but you're extra "special", so deserve a bit more of my time. Let's start with my "leisure activities" that are actually my job. That's right peanut, I'm not out there playing weekend warrior like you. I'm out there guiding groups of disabled children & thier carers out to have experiences they wouldn't otherwise get. Sometimes that's just 4wd'ing, others it's fishing, camping, mountain bike riding, abseiling, bush walking or any number of other outdoor activities I facilitate. The point is, I'm not out there just because I feel like it. I'm out there because I'm paid to be out there. Next up, I pick up about 2 tonnes of rubbish each year cleaning up after bozos + I organize clean ups each year at two of WA's most popular 4wd destinations. On top of that, wd40 has very little environmental impact when used properly. If you apply it & allow it to dry before heading off road, it DOESN'T COME OFF. That's right, it doesn't wash off until you actually wash the vehicle, which is done at facilities containing partical & chemical traps. That means even when I wash the vehicle, the wd40 still doesn't enter the environment. So maybe next time you think you're better than somebody else & that massive ego & pea brain of yours decides it's a good idea to have a go at them, you will stop & think for a moment. Perhaps you'll even realize you're making accusations based on nothing more than you're own incorrect assumptions & decide to keep your stupid thoughts to yourself. Now boot off & don't bother me againya muppet
