- In this 71st Video from Classic Car ChitChat you will get to see a stunningly beautiful 1972 Ford Capri. This beauty has been owned by Phil for over 50 years. The v6 and 2.6L engine still runs as smooth as ever. The car has a beautiful black colour with gold pin-striping that is reminiscent of the John Player Special striping. The car has been lovingly maintained over the years and kept away from the winter and in the right light looks like a Mustang from the era!

I hope my Classic Car ChitChat video’s make you smile. I do them in my spare time because I truly love cars and my intentions are simply to honour the beautiful cars I get to see and to really understand the passion and love of the vehicle by the driver (or caretaker as Jay Leno would say) of the car. I also understand too that my videos perhaps lack the polish calibre of great CZcamsrs like: Doug DeMuro, Scotty Kilmer, and of course my favourite Supercar Blondie. I also know that I can’t even come close the quality & finish you get from the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and the boys at Top Gear. I think they use a little fancier equipment than my little iPhone… LOL
Mission Statement:
My Objective through creating these videos is to shine the spotlight on people who love their vehicles whether it be a car, motorcycle, or even a bicycle…. Bottom line is if it has wheels and you love it then let’s show that passion to the world!
Equipment Used:
Camera - Just an iPhone SE (Nothing fancy - which proves anyone can use whatever you have handy to make a video… you don’t need really expensive equipment)
Gimbal - DJI OM4 - For that ultra-smooth cinematic look. (To be honest... still not quite sure how to use it but one day I will figure it out!)
Audio - Rode Wireless GO II (I gotta be honest… this is really the biggest investment that was made… I wish there was a cheaper option but after the first couple of videos I soon realized that audio quality is important and hopefully better than the onboard mic on the iPhone!

I love the Capri. I've wanted one since I was 12yrs old. I finally got a 1970 model 3yrs ago(40yrs later). Mine is engineered with a 5.0l V8, 5spd manual. It needs some work, my struggles with depression and alcohol addiction have kept me from getting it on the road, but it's in my garage looking beautiful. I'm sober now and going to get into it this summer. Thanks for showing this beautiful example.

Wouter, you said it beautifully. It is so true.. I still recall one of my friends dads getting the car and he opted for the 2L Ghia model at the time and I could not keep my eyes off the car. I've owned a few second hand examples only one Mark 1 (1973 model) I regret having to sell that ...look long story short I'm saving for a Mark 3 before they go from costing a lot to too much .
My first car was a Capri and my last car will be a Capri. Ford really got the shape right with this car.
Great post, thanks. I had a December '72 car in the metallic green colour (not BRG in the UK) with that tan interior. Mine was a 3.0 GXL which had the "Essex" V6 instead of the Koln 2.6 V6. This was the third version of the Series 1 V6 Capri in the UK and was also made in the Koln factory, being a RHD car for the UK market. The wheels were a nice steel type, as shown on the Mk. 3 Cortina in your video.

I bought a 1973 3 litre Capri back in 1977 with a blown engine, replaced it with the same albeit German V6 completely redid the interior in wine red draylon with deep button upholstery (it was what you did then) put a piper cam in it rebuilt and painted the engine and it went like a rocket, of course being a dummy I sold it 5 years later and still miss it to this day, Oh and it had a Quadraphonic Cartridge stereo

My high school graduation present was a new, dark green 71 Capri 2000. I drove it back and forth several times between my home in Fresno, CA and college at the University of South Dakota. I increased the power in stages, starting with an Offenhauser dual port two bbl intake, then to an Offy 4 bbl intake with Holley 390 cfm carb, and finally to an Ak Miller turbocharger. While in South Dakota a friend converted the windshield washer into a water/methanol system. Between the H2O injection and aviation fuel which we could buy back then it was a screamer. After college I drove it to medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico. After 10 years and about 110,000 miles I sold it. I always kept it in pristine condition and despite its very active life I sold it for $2500, slightly more than the original msrp. Great memories.

Beautiful car; I had the original 1972 fitted out with twin webers and engine work but couldn’t come close to my 72 2600 that we cut the installed Manley valves from a Chevy, cut 80 thousand off the head to raise compression, crane camshaft, headers, Ana’s dual exhaust with center muffler removed and a Mallory dual point distributor. Ripped off shifts at 7500rpm slamming the rear differential into the undercarriage as it walked away from BMW TIIs and Alphas. Gave serious fits to Datsun 240z owners who could stay with it unless seriously modified. Sold it to a college student to take away to college and told him to be careful. Lasted one week before he put a tree in the passengers seat after seriously misjudging his speed, running headfirst to its demise.

I had a 73 2600 new bro had 72 .2000. I miss mine had n high school. Raced a r x 2 and we were same speed. Not a fast car but fun. My wife creaked it twice sold it. In 73.

Oh my gosh! You take me back to when I was 17. I had one of the first 50 Capri's sold in the USA. It was just the 1600, so gutless. Unfortunately I wrapped it around a tree at about 80MPH. Very lucky to walk away, but I still love that car. Especially when I first got it and there were not very many on the road.

You were lucky to have gotten such an awesome car at a young age and sadly the tree walked out in front of you. It just blows my mind even thinking about it that Phil (like you) bought this car and still managed to hold on to her all these years. There is always that special bond between a man and his car that just continues to get stronger with each passing year. Speaking of bonds.. I woke up this morning thinking my little MG turns 50 next year.. I should buy her a gift.. perhaps a set of chrome wire wheels would make her (and me) happy!

I had a 1974 Capri with the V6 4 speed back in the 1980's. Sorry,I don't have fond memories of the car as it had the common issue of the steering wobble. The back quarter windows both flew out and smashed along the side of the road. I also had the shifter break off in my hand while driving it. I didn't miss it after trading it in.

My intention for the videos are not to be "how to" videos (I think there are amazing videos made by others far qualified than me) instead my focus is to create a platform where "ordinary" people who love cars get an opportunity to speak about their car and why that car means so much to them. You are right in your comments. The Capri from the very start had the most beautiful lines ever. I sometimes wish that Ford would bring back a retro style Capri and perhaps follow Car makers like Dodge who seem to know how to recreate the muscle cars with the latest tech.
Very nice Phil. I started my career as a mechanic at a Mercury dealer in Sussex, New Brunswick in 1979 so I remember these well. I myself have owned Mk 2 Cortinas since the late seventies and presently have two GT models. I used to service alot of Capris for friends over the years because it was hard to get good service on this type of car at the time with American car mechanics not very familiar with the product and the product was in my opinion poorly promoted by Ford dealers on this continent, poor parts inventory etc. I feel that it is easier to get parts today with the internet than it was at the time. While there may be quite a few of these surviving i bet there would only be a dozen or so with a current registration on the road in Canada. Anyway Phil, i am glad you got this car back on the road and know that you are too. I wouldnt mind having my Cortina/s featured on this channel.

I'll be honest, I really did not know much about the Capri until I saw the video. I can see why everyone loves it. The owner is one lucky dude. A word of advice sir please never sell her and love to regret it like so many of us do. I wish I still kept my old CJ5 🙁
Thank you Steve for your comments. You are correct I feel very lucky to have been able to keep this Capri for all these years. I had many say; get rid of that car wasting away! My response was always someday it will be back on the road. That day finally arrived.

Hello, Lovely car. Perhaps in the USA Ford was not on the capri, but... if you look at any pictures of the Mark 1 from Europe, they all had F O R D across the front of the Bonnett (Hood). And I also remember that from my fathers dark blue MK1, That was a 4 Cyl 1.6 4 speed, Thirsty but lovely to drive, Just treat the back of it woth respect and it will treat you with the same. I actually liked the Grillls in front of the back wheels, gave character. They had 2 wing mirrors twoards the front of the wings.

Niall, thank you. Your insight is right on! In Canada the Capri was imported by Ford Mercury. The market campaign was to make market space with the European Capri The price point was competing against the MG, TR6 & Datsan Z240 so they put the CAPRI badge on the hood to separate from Ford.
I had a few 3 litre Capri's in the 80,s in Manchester UK all models being Mk1 ,Mk2 and the last Mk3 ,great cars loved them I had 2 Mk1,s one being a 1972 3000E Daytona yellow with black vinyl top, and a 1974 white Mk1 with vinyl top twin headlights and wofrace wheels very similar to this car , wish I had one still good memory's and cars , UK got 3000cc engines , good luck to the guy keeping hold of it , Cheers 👍.

Nice, my brother had the 72 in the British racing green but with the 4cyl. He had a 68 Mustang convertible 302 he got from a Doctor neighbor but he just had to have a capri.

What a great car. I saw only 2 in my lifetime and both were at a car meet in San Diego. I can't get over the owner having had this car since new. That still shocks me. Wish I kept my old El Camino - It was in rough shape but I loved it.

You've brought back some incredible memories! I had one of these when I was in high school. I used to challenge my friends to find the horn. I would push the center of the steering wheel while using my pinky finger on the horn. Only a Capri owner knows where to find the horn!

I can't remember about the horn. Also, is that the car that the windshield washer pump was a rubber bulb on the floor with a switched metal ring around it to activate the wipers. On mine you could just touch the ring only with your toe and not the press the bulb and you had wiper mist control. I could be thinking about our '71 Opel 1900 though. It was a long time ago.
Hi Phil, you can get a lot of parts from UK and Germany, in Germany you have Motomobil, and in UK you have Burton Powers and many more. If you want panels you can get them from Ex-pressed steel panels. they make new panels.

You must have had the seats reupholstered. My rear seat tops were destroyed by the sun. To this day every car I have I put a protective windshield sunshield over the rear deck when parked outside-that works. I bought my second-hand 1972 Capri 2000cc 4-cylinder for $600 in about 1976 with double shift sweat money earned in a steam plant in college. It was originally yellow with black interior. I think it was owned from new by a rich sorority girl at my same university judging by the parking stickers. The seller resprayed it fresh yellow for me. Cars in those days didn't last as long as now. It was already worn out and I barely kept it running but it sure was fun to drive. I repainted those original wheels he showed with black and silver spray paint and it looked great. Funny story, the behind the dash wiper mechanism broke and I somehow replaced it with one from the junkyard- a hard job. Two days later, out of the clear blue sky, Ford somehow found me with a letter recalling the car for that very thing and offered a free dealership replacement of the wiper mechanism! Too late! Also mine had no front bumper so I was embarrassed by that driving it in college. I looked high and low for a bumper (pre internet days) with no luck. Honestly though it didn't look that bad without it. My dad, tongue in cheek, said, why don't you make a wooden bumper. Not funny.

I owned one of these but it was a 1974 as I recall. But it was badged in the USA as a Mercury not a Ford. Wish I had never sold it. I loved that car.

I had a many say you need to sell that car and I resisted until she was back on the road. It was a fine day driving again in the Capri. Glad I did not give in.
Ford Capris were sold at Lincoln/Mercury dealers in North America,so most people there referred to them as Mercury Capris,or just Capris,even though car people knew they were European Fords,just like Ford Anglias & Cortinas. But i never saw any Mercury OR Ford badging on the exterior of them in North America....only CAPRI...just like this car.
Had one in red with the essex v4. Superficially, it could sit next to this car, but underneath it was a mess. If im not mistaken, this v6 is an essex as it has the dual exhaust outlets from each engine bank. The Cologne v6, I'm told, had triple outlets per bank. Beautiful car, wish i didnt give up on mine.

@@ClassicCarChitChat I started off hating the v4 but loving the car, but I grew attached and when it blew up, I chose to rebuild rather than convert to a faster, smoother, more refined and reliable modern Japanese (that was a time when conversion was acceptable and even recommended). That was an illogical decision at the time, but I didn't care.

My '73 Mercury Capri had the sunroof, I think it was a dealer installed option. It had the same crank handle as the kit used on the VW beetle. The 2600 in my '73 had a single Weber that I replaced with a dual carb manifold that I fabricated an aluminium adapter to mount a 500cfm Holley double pumper... The cam and valve springs were replaced with Iskidarian autocross goodies, a Mallory dual point distributor and a pair of cherrybombs really let that v6 pull hard to 8300rpm. There wasn't a stock Z28 that could keep up with it! =^.^= ©2024

For years I thought Phil was just pulling my leg about having a pristine Capri in his garage. All I ever saw was a sheet! What an incredible looking car, I have seen interiors with more wear on them in 5 year old cars. And for this to be a one owner car after 50 years is unbelievable. Next time we drop by in Mississauga well make sure to pop in for a look at this gem!

@@karlgrabe7673 Karl thank you for watching our video and for leaving your comments. Darlene left me no choice by saying either fix up the Capri or get rid of it to make space in the garage. While the later couldn't be my decision so we had it refurbished. I never knew finding parts would so difficult and time consuming. Lucky I had a good mechanic that also loved Capris and he had the time to search all over Canada & the USA to find what we needed. The biggest issue was finding tires for the small rims. Kevin will know about this as his MGB also has very small rims.

My Dad had a cherry 72 V6, MT…lowered for auto crossing…have it to my brother when he was 16…got t-boned….it folded like paper…rust even though indoor for life…wish they were galvanized steel…I would love get one and make a US 3000E…maybe a 3.0 from a Ford Ranger…they were 150/185 hp/tq…that would be plenty and reliable…I still see some nice ones for sale…

My first car was the 1974 Mercury Capri in that rust orange with tan interior. It was absolutely loaded with every option available. Unfortunately I was a kid that was very much into the performance limits of my vehicles which was the reason I bought the car (actually, for the price of $1500 back in 1980, I stole it). That car was a spectacular performer on the twisties, especially after doing the Bilstein suspension upgrade I installed. Absolutely “loved” the way that car drove and almost immediately regretted selling it to move on to the next level. Definitely a special little car for it’s time.

2600 is the European engine, the cologne V6, if you look at the headers , you can see they only have 2 pipes because of the siamesed ports, in the UK we had the Essex V6 in 3.0 or 3.1 in the RS3100 ( Europe had the RS 2600 , similar looking but more different than it appears) we got the cologne engine with the mk3 Capri in the uk with the 2.8i , ive owned a few mk3s ( including a 3.0 ) and a mk2, id love a mk1 but i concentrated more on Escorts in my time, i dont even know how many mk1 and mk2 Escorts ive owned 😂. This car is very pretty in black with the slot mags 👌

If my memory was serves me correctly there was a 3 litre version. I worked at a Ford dealership in the seventies.I remember a 3 litre being unloaded of the transporter and I drove it into the dealership.It was finished in purple which was an unusual colour for the time.

Hi Dennis, you are correct there was 3 litre version. I was not able to order it in Canada at the dealership. There were not many available Ghia was 3 L and 3000 Sport were very popular in the UK. Thank you for adding that information.

We in the UK also had a 3.1ltr which was the R.S Capri which was quite a rare car also in Germany the R.S Capri was a 2.8lt which if my memory recalls was called the Colone V6 and in the U.K the 3.0/3.1 engines where called the Essex V6 ,just a observation I always thought the Capri was only called that in Europe and in America /Canada it was called the Mercury Capri 🤔 the Capri in the video is cosmeticly very different to our European ones , I use to own a 3.0ltr 3000GT 1969year then a 3000E 1971year (the E had a few more cosmetic extras than the GT)

Howie, Thank you for noticing the plate. I wanted CAPRI72, but in those days the custom plate had to be a mix of letters and numbers but there was a limited. so CAPRI 72 was not possible. Did the next best with CAP 72

Those switches is not that hard to locate when you know where tto look. I bet Team Blitz in Ohio has them. Or Capri Gear in UK which is a Capri breaker. Then you have Capri Club International in UK who has a bunch of parts for sale.

Mr. Caprinut, Yes, Team Blitz is a good source of Capri parts. Also easy to deal with. The switches although are tough to locate. When restoring my 72 I left the switch in the dash for show but bypassed their function with a toggle switch mounted under the dash. Stole a lot of parts from the Cortina then shows a pic of the Mk3 Cortina when the Mk2 was actually the parts donar. With a similar floorpan and the same suspension componants. McPherson struts at the front and leaf springs at the rear. The Mk3 had double wishbone front suspension and coil springs at the rear. The floorpan was also larger. The British Mk1 Capri came with a 3 litre 'Essex' V6 as well as smaller 'Kent' straight 4 cylinder variants, 1.3, 1.6 and the 'Cologne' 1.7, 2.0 V4.

@@ClassicCarChitChat Sadly Kevin, or maybe not, I don't own a Capri but my liking of them stems back to me being around 7 years old when my father worked for a 2nd hand car dealership. One evening he came home in a metallic purple Mk1 Capri 3000E. I fell in love with it straight away. He had it for a few weeks before selling it. Then he came home in a gold, with a black vinyl roof, Mk1 Capri 3000 GT/XLR. Once again I fell in love with it. A few weeks later that was sold and he came home in a Mk2 Cortina 1600e (top of the range at that time). I refused to even get in the car at first and walked to school the next day! These days, I have a mk3 Cortina sitting in a cold lockup, waiting to be put back on the road but real life issues have put a 'stop' on any progress for now.

Nice, but I can't understand why you started off your video with an MGB. I had a 1970 MGB and also a 1970 Capri. Both were reasonably good cars at the time.

My intention for the videos is to allow ´ordinary people’ like you and I who love cars an opportunity to speak about their love of their car and why that car means so much to them. After all we are all the ´caretakers’ of our cars (as Jay Leno rightly says). The reason I start with my MG is because I simply love my car. All my videos show the MG as a back drop and since I speak to people with even brand new cars… having a CLASSIC CAR is part of my channel.

German engineering is really in most cases so superior and having a combination of the two is just great.
