Russian oil getting into UK via refinery loophole, reports claim | BBC News

  • Millions of barrels of fuel made from Russian oil are still being imported to the UK despite sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine, research claims.
A so-called "loophole" means Russian crude is refined in countries such as India with the products then sold to the UK.
This is not illegal and does not breach the UK's Russian oil ban, but critics say it undermines sanctions aimed at restricting Russia's war funds.
The UK government denied there had been any imports of Russian oil since 2022.

How are you gonna close this sanction loophole, and at what percentage limit? Say a limit is applied at 50% russian, then refineries will just blend at 49% and its solved. The only true way is to ban fuel from all russian oil importers, but that would come at a big cost.

AND to those calling Tories or Sunak for favouritism towards India, know that British Pension funds, Insurance funds, sovereign funds, Mutual funds, Hedge funds are invested in India. And in return get high return on their investment, because of high economic growth and bull run in Indian stock market. You will be more wise to know, actually Labour is/was more pro-India than Tories, historically.

I hope they stop that. I don't mind raising oil prices as long as we apply sanctions properly! This is the same as big brands still selling tons of products to Russia through India, Turkey and China.

After putting in place a price cap on Russian oil, they then buy the refined Russian oil from India at a much higher price than what would be otherwise. End of the day, British also need oil and no one else is giving them any. So you will buy. When the woman was asked whether there are alternatives, she said very quickly there are alternatives and then quickly continued with her refinery sanctions narrative. Fact is, there are no alternatives or she would've mentioned them. You are not fooling anyone Barbie.
