The Citadel of Steam: Grand Canyon Railway Photo Charter 2017

- In February of 2017, Pete Lerro of Lerro Photography hosted a special photo charter on the Grand Canyon Railway out of Williams, Arizona. This was two straight days of non-stop, steam action along the 65 mile branch of the former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe!
Day 1 saw recently returned consolidation, No. 29 haul a four-car Pullman train from Williams to the south rim of the Grand Canyon with runbys performed from dawn to dusk. Day 2 began with fantrip legend, No. 4960 and a five-car Pullman train performing runbys into the afternoon. Also included was the regular train with the now rare, Alco FPA-4's at the head end. The icing on the cake was both 29 and 4960 doubleheading a eight-car Pullman train all the way to day's end, a pure example of steam at its very finest!
This is twenty minutes of a jam-packed excitement as the Grand Canyon Railway once again showcases the true citadel of steam!

Hello from the UK. What a brilliant video. Stunning scenery (although you seem to be out in the middle of nowhere) and superb trains. That is how I imagine the USA railways to be. I love that there are no support diesels on the steam train, and I love that the coaches (cars?) are so appropriate for the locomotives. The photography is excellent. No panning and shaking of the camera, no cheesy music and no commentary. What a beautiful sound those steam whistles made. If I go to the USA, that is how I would love to travel! Didn't see evidence of any passengers though.
Coaches is the appropriate term for passenger cars, as these are coach type cars in the video.
And yes this is quite literally in the middle of nowhere - which is part of what makes these scenes so timeless... A lot easier to fool the eye into thinking you're looking back in time when the landscape hasn't changed much since the 1800s.
Great video. Thanks! Wish I had been there. I was there in the first week of the new year 2017, and took the train round trip from Williams behind the diesel. Its a wonderful trip even without the steam.

The Scene at Willaha is like stepping back through time. this scene with two steam locomotives and two Alco FPA4s, each with a matching train, could be the 1940s

I grew up playing on an engine much like these that was at a local park on display.
I always wondered how it would look pulling passenger cars and when donated to the park, all it had was a engine, tender and caboose. Sadly all the years of kids playing on it took a tole, Eventually they put a fence around it but many kids learned to get past that.
It began its life in military service and at the Port of Mobile and I think they bought 4 of them. After serving for WW2, it eventually was purchased by Gulf States Paper Corp. until retired and donated to the Park. I found pictures of it now all painted well and in a nice home
The significance was that the Factory next to Gulf States Paper, My Great Grandfather was the first engineer when that plant opened. He was a Train engineer in the CSA and was older, but passed his job down the family and for over 100 years, that job stayed in the family. My Cousin was the youngest male in the family and in my grandfathers will, he has the collection of 6 pocket watches the companies awarded family members as conductors. Since The Holt Central Foundry had similar engines during that time, So I kinda bonded with the Gulf States engine as a kid.
BTW, I learned that my Great Grandfather's engine was saved and restored then used in the first series of engine used to do tours around Stone Mountain GA. And I rode it as a kid but never knew it at that time. But a postcard from there matched an very old picture the family had saved. I was too young to even know much but loved that train ride and the engines! I even got a tour of the service buildings at that age!
Now that Gulf states Engine was sold and it is getting proper care at a Railroad park/ Museum. Our town could no longer maintain that park. But I still have scars I got climbing all over that engine as a kid!
Thanks for showing me what I had dreamed for so long as a kid! A very similar engine and working so well! The Diesel Electric engines just didn't have a soul that spoke to you like steam did. Steam Engines seemed to be alive and had personalities. Think people that were around them can understand that feeling?
BTW, I had an uncle that back in the day could sneak us on trips and I got to ride in the caboose with them! The crew taught me how to jump from side to side without getting down and the leather couches in the top of the Caboose were so cool! First big turn I could see everything on the line! After that one I got the other side alone.
He was so cool and we had crew come back to eat on breaks. I helped him prepare the meals/ Clean up and wash everything. We swapped sides when he needed to because he had to watch during turns. And, I had to hide when towns that had car crossings!
That trip would get bubble wrapped kids today on the national news if caught! I had the coolest time but could not tell anyone Back then! I even learned to fuel up the colored Kerosene lanterns as my Job for the Trip, and learned to light flares! All before kindergarten age! the middle 1960's.

It sucks that Engine 18 is not there anymore, but I do believe that Engine 29 has the whistle #18 used to have
I am disappointed that I didn't see steam on my trip to the Grand Canyon Railway but I did have fun Railfanning in Williams.

Thank you very much for the feedback. 29 has about 4 years left before she needs to be taken out of service as part of the 15 year FRA mandated inspection, even that is still up in the air at the moment by the railroad. If you want to see 29 in action, it's highly recommended to do so before the end of 2019 as who knows what will happen afterwards. Thank you and have a good day.

1:15 #29 sure was rolling! Also, what railroads are #29 and #4960 from?
They're both currently operated by the Grand Canyon Railroad, I know for a fact that 4960 was originally a CB&Q locomotive, and according to their site number 29 comes from the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad.
Both have obviously been heavily modified, I know for sure that 4960 looked almost nothing like she does now in her Burlington career, and I have a feeling some similar modifications have been made to 29 as they look oddly similar to each other considering they were built in two different eras, for two completely different jobs, on two different railroads.

18 is actually slightly smaller and less powerful than 29, though i would like to see a loco just like 29. Sigh.

Maybe, maybe not. It all depends who organize one as Grand Canyon Railway were only hosting this charter (Providing the railroad, equipment and crew). 11:13 why do they not use thoses engines anymore???????? retirement or does the gcr perfer the f40s????????
The F40s are probably much more reliable and easier to maintain. Not to mention they’re much newer and more fuel efficient.
@@centralcaliforniarail that's probably the best reason since I do believe those diesels were built in the 50s or 60s unlike the f40s that were built in the mid to late 70s

I despise the new look for 4960. She looks nothing like she did originally; she was much prettier with no headlight on the smoke box and the cooped up tender. Why did they have to change the look so much?
Both of those changes were done out of necessity. 4960’s original tender was completely rotted out, so a new tender was needed. The headlight being moved to the nose was done to produce more visibility. I believe it may also be an FRA requirement, but I’m not entirely sure.

Due to the limited amount of participants Mr. Lerro wants for each of his charters (We had about 50 for this one), he tries not to go all out full public with them.
