I love everything about this: the smokiness in her voice, the breathiness, the little cry, the slow tempo, the giant wig and the restraint. Her later versions were overly ornate as much of her later singing tended to be, perhaps to compensate for the vocal damage of all of those cigarettes.

Yes. Finally someone who understands the dynamics of her voice as well as the changes it occurred in. The early to mid 70's were her peak. The 80's to early 90's were her worst. She heavily over-used melisma as well as coloratura for everything. She could still hit all her previous notes, they were just in horrendous condition. So she rarely, if ever, used them. And when she did she would cleverly build her way up to the note usually either in glissando or later than previously intended. The rest of the 90's, her voice improved dramatically. With a clearer timbre as well as regained access to her upper register. As she had quit smoking. She even faced off against Celine Dion! Her ability to stay relevant until her death as well as adapt to her vocal changes and even her being able to compete and keep up with younger singers while being brave enough to do so gives prove that no other singer can top her music genius and talent. She truly is the Queen Of Soul. 👑🎶

Aretha was in the midst of an incredible run as the premier female singer of the universe, circa August 1968
