Other than perhaps not sharing one of your view points - (in my opinion this IS just an upgraded RTR with Genesis lighting effects), I couldn't agree more re the missed opportunities. Athearn did not include etched metal grills throughout which is disappointing, and the same goes for the non-illuminated number board. I appreciate Athearn would have had to re-tool the car body to add the etched grills at considerable cost but there seems to be a bit of arrogance there that Athearn knew the model would be a sell-out without the investment of re-tooling. One important and much needed upgrade compared to the RTR version is the chassis, which as shown in this review is a substantial piece of alloy compared to the lightweight chassis in the RTR. Guess we will have to wait for Rapido to produce an upgraded version with mesh grills etc in 10 year's time. I have ordered an Athearn P42. Really great review by the way!

Just received my Athearn P-40DC #824 with sound. With Tsunami 2 does it have a shut down function like other decoders? The other issue is the horn is really loud and the bell the opposite. Thanks for your review.
I was excited to get my # 12 but now that I know it has Tsunami 2 sound I'm kind of bummed out wishing Athearn had gone with the better and programmable ESU LokSound.
I am eager for the VIA Rail Canada version to be released.
I buy DC only, Soundtraxx is not all that great.
CV 123 data 5 is the correct sound with HEP.

Honestly embarrassing how bad soundtraxx did on the sound. Once again a prime example of Athearn doing their part but soundtraxx failing. I’ll get mine dcc ready and put esu in em. Great review
Agreed. Soundtraxx is really low on the higher end side of sound. ESU FTW!

Those looked like RTR/Bluebox trucks and not the same you would find on a Genesis SD70 model.
Where did you get this? I can’t find these anywhere.
I got my from Lombard Hobby, they didn't have any sound units left though

I got AMTK#12 recently and after comparing with photos, I found some flaws in the paint scheme, for example the number board in the front deviated from the centerline, and the space between individual numbers on the side is a bit large. The number board might be a manufacture flaw, but I think the numbers on the side is probably a design flaw.
I’m a bit entangled on this matter. I’m still positive towards this model, the flaws don’t ruin the whole experience, but they are flaws indeed. On the other hand it’s almost impossible to find another one now.
I guess my only chance is Athearn, but I doubt if they will be able to correct anything.
