Thanks must go to Tommy P for saving these and making them available. A priceless record, even if satirical, of a vanished world. To be cherished.

I'm currently reading the book upon which this series was based. It's a very faithful recreation.

Recalling a phrase along the lines of "went down heavily again" featured a lot, which sums up some of Arthur Lowe's skills in interpreting this and many other roles.

Arthur Lowe was literally dying as he made this, from neurological problems aggravated by heavy drinking. He died of a stroke days after taping on the sixth and final episode of this series was completed

Very sad indeed. The books are hilarious and Arthur Lowe was perfectly cast in the role of Wentworth.

Classic Actor who should have got more leading parts but he passed them by due to health and wife commitments ...what a shame

Arthur Lowe in the final five years of his life suffered from the sleep disorder called narcolepsy which led to him slowly sounding like he was mumbling and slurred. It affected the speech parts of his brain, which by 1982 would lead to a stroke which killed him.

    Love the old fashioned humour.
The children don’t answer the SPQR question: it is an abbreviation of ''Senātus Populusque Rōmānus', it appears on Roman currency, It means The Roman Senate and People.
When the boy shouts out 'Cave', he is using the Latin imperative to signify 'Beware', ie the master is about to return.
When one of the boys talks about 'impot', he is using a schoolboy term for 'imposition, ie lines.

I have never heard of this, which is a shame, because it has what is described as 'a certain charm...' - tragic considering Lowes health problems at the time.

Captain G Mainwaring, BA. Where was his khaki uniform given that this was during the Second World War. My father would have been the right age to be a pupil in this school, as he was born in late 1932.

CZcams has a habit of blocking everything I post. Would this mention make it a solution?

He was not very well when this was made. For some strange reason his bumbling presentation somehow enhances his performance. I think it can all be covered by the term character acting ! He was a loveable old actor and I always remember him fondly.
