  • This is a short video showing how i cleared up my new ecosystem pond. After building it was very muddy. I'd been patiently waiting for it to clear on it's own but i got impatient.
    I used a flocculant to clear it up. If you can't find the flocculent i used try the amazon link below for a suitable fish and plant safe flocculent to clear up your muddy pond.

    Flocculant works best when you did what you did and put it in a watering can and cast over the whole pond. If you just pour the amount out of the bottle straight into the pond, the results will not be anywhere near as good. Nice work.

    Use under water jets and good skimmer, add a big filter. Your water will be crystal clear.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 3 lety

      Agreed. Can’t beat a bog filter, good circulation and a skimmer or intake bay. But even my aquascape pond needed some flocullent to bind the clay particles together. Otherwise they just stay in suspension passing through all the filters.

      Not true, have 2 oase pumps, 6000 lph and 10000 lph, 2 oase filters, 11000 and 16000 and an oase skimmer. Pond was fairly clear for few days but not dirty again. Now have bloody duck weed. Spend days sorting it. off. Only have 6 small fish, 4 goldfish and 2 small Japanese koi. Beginning to hate ponds. Starting to p..s me. Spent £1000s and 10s hours time, water cleared and has just gone back. Wtf

      Yes i had fish and plants didnt seem to edfect them. Just note it flocs and all the muck will end up on the bottom of the pond. It caused some algae. If you have the patience just wait for your filter to clear it out. Filter floss works well

    G'day, my new pond is that orange clay, no liner or concrete. Will the flocculent keep it clean after a few applications? My pond is around 100,000 litres.
    Fairly big but my yard is massive and anything smaller wouldn't look any good. When the weather improves and I can get out there and get more work done, I'll be happy. My next project is a filter most likely a bog filter as you say the work best. Can you send me a link to show me how to build one suitable for my large pond?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem

      I’d expect that you’ll probably need to reapply the flocculent after rain events. Not 100% sure though. I think overtime once vegetation on the edges is established less clay will get stirred up during those events. My dream pond holds about 40,000 litres. I have a playlist on how I built that pond. Hi Kev, I have a brand new pond only a few weeks old. I have put in quite a few plants. It went through the green water stage but that cleared up on its own, however since then the water is clear (ie. I can see the bottom), but has a browny/yellow tint to it - almost like tea or beer. All my research suggests that this is to do with too many decaying plants in the pond. However, as mentioned, its a new pond and hardly any decaying matter at all (yet). So I am calling on you again to see if you have ever come across this and perhaps can assist with what the problem is, and how to fix it (or will it go away on its own)? I might add there is quite a bit of string algae in the pond just at the moment, in case that matters - waiting for the bacteria to do its thing. It's got me stumped as I have 2 other smaller ponds and they never had this issue. Thanks mate

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      Are you putting anything in? Fish food? This question has come up a lot lately. Is there wood in the pond? One guy had lots of gum nuts dropping in his pond. Have you had lots of rain? Runoff perhaps? If it’s not tannins or over feeding try a little flocculent.

    • @kymbo72
      @kymbo72 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Ozponds haven't put any food in, nothing is falling into the pond, it has rained in the last few days, but this brown water was happening well before that. The only thing I did differently compared to my 2 smaller ponds was in this pond with the brown water I didn't have any filtration on it for the first couple of weeks. Instead, I just had a pump moving water up to a 10m stream. I added a filter a couple of days ago, so maybe that will clear it eventually. If not then I will try flocculent as you suggested. Thanks.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před rokem +1

      Yes you could. Although it takes a few goes depending on how dirty the rock and pebble is. I drained and re filled this once before trying the flocculent. The clay has the particles that just refuse to clump together, the flocculent makes them clump and then they can be captured in the filters. Hope that makes sense 👍

My pond looks like that (not as bad) after heavy rainstorms. I have a stream and big filter. My dirt where I’m from is mostly clay.
