    I got stuck in my alley in the same Denver snow. I have all season tires and dual motor M3. I shoveled in front and back of all tires, applied limited slip and eased out of the holes the tires dug in the packed snow. I dislike creep mode and use brake hold at stops or not. The best winter driving tips are limit speed to the posted speed at the least, avoid tail gating, and anticipate stops by slowing your speed . The 4200 lb. car likes to slide and not turn on packed snow. Please train your reflexes by doing donuts on unobstructed parking lots to get accustomed to the sliding and skidding sensations. You will learn how effective steering into the direction of the skid works to counter the skid. Practice helps avoid winter wrecks. Plus it's fun. Thanks for your informative channel.

    I just put very, very good winter tires on my MS 100D and that's it. The traction and stability control electronics are so advanced compared to those in an ICE car that it's basically foolproof.
    The only part where a Tesla can get you, is on steep inclines (especially when going down) because of all that weight. Once the mass starts to slide on a downward slope, you're lost. But conditions have to be VERY extreme to get to that point.
    I tested my traction control on a slab of pure ice. Jushed mashed the accelerator and the car catapulted itself away as if there was no ice at all. Deeply impressive stuff.
    Also, Erik, if you want to play on snow or ice, you'll get a lot more control through very gentle steering inputs. So the opposite of what you were doing. Turning the wheel very briskly and all the way to its stops will just make the car go straight on. As counter intuitive as it may seem, you'll get a lot more steering effect if you turn the wheel just slightly and very gently. I'd come over and show you, but I unfortunately live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

    I suggest winter tire during winter time if you get snow for months. They really improved the performance of your vehicle compared to 4 season tires. By performance I mean handling and braking which is pretty important.

    Thanks for making the video. Snow tires should be #1 before all else. Your tires are the most important thing no matter if your car is ICE, EV, RWD, FWD, AWD. Get snow tires if you are in cold/snowy climates. Period. (side note, here in the US, studded snow/winter tires are mostly illegal for highway use)

  • @CoolSilver
    @CoolSilver Před 4 lety +4

    Well I just updated my Winter profile. I no longer drive in chill mode since front motor doesn't kick in enough to balance the car and hate the rear motor bias. At low speeds it will limit power for you when wheels slip on 1/2 inch of snow. I've found max it lets you go when slipping is 12 mph. I wouldn't trust it beyond slow slippage as it may grab and sent you flying.
    Low regen. Comfort Steering. I keep a higher distance number. Higher HVAC temp. No Folding or Tilting mirrors. No Nav on AP since most the time AP kicks out when radar is blocked.
    Michelin X-ice are good. I still wanted Nokians but they didn't come in stock in time.
    I love driving my 3. On ice it sucks as butt would tailwag a lot especially in chill.

    Good advice about not using summer tires in the cold. I did a European Delivery of a BMW M3 in January and they had me sign a waiver acknowledging I knew the temps would fall below 40 degrees and the Michelin's were not designed for below 40.

    Just moved from San Diego (no snow ever) to Tennessee. Two weeks in and we get a Christmas snow 1" predicted, about 4" actually I'd estimate. (Apparently rare, all the residents are happy about it.) But in any case, currently, we only have 2 of our vehicles here, a Jeep Wrangler and Tesla Model S 100PL.
    Was going to take the Jeep today, but I think after watching your video, we'll give the MS a shot and see. Will report back. Thanks for the settings tips.

    Brutal few days here in Denver. This advice still holds strong after 2 years of software updates. Which company comes to your home to switch out your tires in the Colorado market? One additional tip is I changed my steering from comfort to standard. Just a little bit more feel for any drift correction.

    The 3 needs a heated steering wheel or a Sub-Zero option where cold weather owners could buy it and others not pay for something they don't need/want.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket Před 3 lety +1

      Properly engineered, an optional heated steering wheel could be easily dealer installed. Or, Tesla could give you instructions on the flatscreen and you could do it yourself. It's dumb that Tesla hasn't thought of this.

    Hello guys - love watching your channel whilst waiting (... waiting ... waiting!) for delivery of my Model 3. Could I ask what you do about charging in very cold weather? Do you charge an extra- say - 10% to account for the extra power needed for heating the seats, cabin & battery? Are there advantages or disadvantages to charging for a little extra charge on board in cold climates? Thanks!

    • @srikanna4597
      @srikanna4597 Před 4 lety +2

      set up scheduled charging to your cabin and battery are warmed using the grid current just when you leave. A little extra charging can mainly help with winter range anxiety

    Thanks guys for all the great videos. This is off-topic but what's you best guess for the cost of 1,000 supercharger miles? That's the current referral code incentive and I don't know if my math is correct, but if you averaged 260 Wh/mile and charged at home with a $0.12 kWh rate, I'm coming up with about $35.88 to go 1,000 miles. I'm sure superchargers are pricier, and vary in cost by location, but what's you best guess on the supercharger cost for 1,000 miles? $50 maybe? Thanks! :)

    • @aussie2uGA
      @aussie2uGA Před 4 lety +2

      Depends on location as utility rates vary. In southern states, I would estimate $40.

    I've heard about many Model 3 owners having their rear glass crack after using the defroster during preheating. Sounds like most had window tint. Are these isolated events, or should I be concerned about using my defrost mode running for 30 minutes or so before I get to my car? My car stays outside up to 4 days in temps sometimes below 0 a couple of times per month.

    • @TeslaInventory
      @TeslaInventory  Před 4 lety +2

      My car is outside every day while at work. I preheat and it's been crazy cold here lately with snow on the cars. Never had an issue with any of my Model 3s and all were tinted. Perhaps the tint installers did something or caused something while shrinking the film? I don't know. But no issue here.

    • @CoolSilver
      @CoolSilver Před 4 lety +2

      Mine did originally when it was getting into 40-50s after delivery in 2018. Been replaced and no problems since. I think some batches may had problems. I have never tinted my windows.

    How well do Teslas heat their interiors? With no radiators and engines, don’t heaters kill your battery very quickly?

    • @GregHassler
      @GregHassler Před 4 lety +3

      They heat up really fast. It will definitely hurt the range, but not if you preheat while still plugged in. Plus they have really big batteries, so even with the hit to range you still have 200+ miles on most models.
