Hi all, Dave here! Welcome to the first part of what will be a 7 or 8 part series of videos. In this series I'll be joined by the ever awesome Rev N Fidel, and we'll be discussing our thoughts on John Gray's book Seven Types of Atheism. Each week we'll be discussing one of the chapters where Gray writes about particular kinds of practical atheism. What do I mean by that? Well, you'll have to watch the video as I explain it in the video.
As this is the first part of the series, we focus on the introduction and the first chapter, which is on New Atheism. The next episode will focus on Secular Humanism and Gray's thoughts on that. In this video Rev and I discuss what we like about the introduction and first chapter, some of the points that connected with us, and how we see the points relating to atheists like ourselves and others.

I enjoyed that. As a linguist I got a bit annoyed by the prescriptivist in the chat, demanding that words be used how his concise dictionary defines them, but other than that very interesting.
Thank you for watching! For a purpose of review, it seemed important to emphasize words that he defined for the text, to discuss his ideas
@@revnfidel There was a person in the chat who could not get over the word "faith" being used in relation to science. It was explained to him by several people, but it was a red line for this guy. He seemed unable to grasp that he was performing an illustration of one of the author's issues with certain types of atheism.

(fwiw, as per usual, I missed a lot of meaning by typing and reading in the chat. One of these days, I'll learn to listen rather than get deeply involved in the chat.)
That's a shame about the library system not having the book! And kind of suprising considering how many copies our library had! And the series is my pleasure. Am really enjoying reading the book, and recording with Rev. He's a really interesting, and really smart, guy. Hopefully will see you for next Tues premiere! And can relate to the chat thing, that happens to me a lot!
Very interesting discussion. I flipped through this book when it was new. I remember an Atheist call-in show host being offended by it. I'm going to have to give it an honest read now.

@@KindNine I think the person I'm referring to would fit more the "New Atheist" category. I just started reading the book though, so I can't say for sure yet.
By the way I recommend a better microphone for Rev this one sounds like bees in a box.
He got a new mic for the rest of the series of videos. Unfortunately we had some technical difficulties getting it working for the second recording, but we'll have it all sorted out for the rest of the series.

51:52 You're not going to find meaning in science? What an absurd thing to say. I was already getting annoyed by this point with a number of overgeneralizations but couldn't even keep watching after this one.

@@TrolleyDave The discussion wasn't about whether science will find meaning. The discussion was about who will find meaning in science. And the claim was the nobody would, which is what I think is an absurd notion.
@@thenonsequitur That's what Rev is talking about there. Not finding fulfilment through doing science, but using science to find meaning.
Your truths? There is truth or not truth. Gravity is gravity. Your truth may be that you can fly. Gravity doesn't care. Define terms better. You guys are all over the place. Generalizations and assumptions abound.
I've been an secular humanist & atheist 30+ years. Never heard of any popular apologists or outspoken atheists until a few years ago.
Thanks for the tip about defining terms, but I think we're just fine using them the way we have.
What's the relevance of your comment about popular apologists and outspoken atheists?
The book and you are attacking people who are generally irrelevant to atheists as a whole. Very much the same way atheists lump apologists in with christians as a whole. CZcams and this book are a snapshot of a very narrow mindset and you seem to be falling into this trap throughout your discussion whether you recognize it or not. Once again, truth doesn't care about your feelings or what you find meaningful.
@@Mr.PeabodyTheSkeptic We're discussing the book, so of course we're going to be discussing the people that book is discussing. We're also discussing the kinds of people that we come across in our discussions with our fellow atheists, and discussing the common behaviours we see in those groups. If we could only discuss traits and commonalities that appear in every member of the group then we wouldn't be able to discuss anything at all.
And sure, truth doesn't care about our feelings. But that doesn't mean that there aren't truths out in the world about ourselves that we need to find, especially when it comes to finding something like meaning. Our feelings also certainly care about truth, especially when that truth is incompatible with what we already believe to be some kind of incontrovertible truth.

Rev is one of the least hateful people I've met in my life. He's not masquerading as a nice guy, he is one.

Neither of them are responsible for that state of affairs, the capitalists are the ones responsible. Because Capitalism is the one true religion of our time, all others are just old religions turned into cults. Some of those cults are here to help capitalism (Prosperity Gospel), others not so much (New Age Stuff) and a few are kind of against it (Marxists).
