Of course it matter. The point is that you learn what Singapore did right to be richer in gdp than it’s former coloniser. Singapore being tiny with no resources , without the land to even feed itself has more problems than Africa initially. Crime was rampant. The multi ethnic groups were rioting and killing each other . Singapore mostly moved forward from that. The problem with African nations is that many like to look for someone or something to blame and lost sight of any way forward .

Colonization is a huge reason for why Africa is poor and anyone who has opened up a book on the continent will attest to that. It's not the ONLY reason or even the MAIN reason. One of the main reasons lies in selfish corrupt people leading the African revolutions and not letting go of power for the next 40 years, thus driving their countries' economies into the ground. The other reason is western backed coups throwing the actual good, pro-African, anti-western, oftentimes socialist leaders (Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso, Patrice Lumumba of DRC, etc) out of power so they can be replaced with corrupt, autocratic, but pro-western and pro-capitalist leaders who undid all of their predecessor's progress.
The best modern example is Libya. Gaddafi wasn't by any means a great leader. He did terrible things and he was insane. But he knew how to keep a country functional and knew how to provide the Libyan people with a standard of living on par with the middle income countries of Latin America, which is a huge step up for a lot of African countries. As soon as Gaddafi was killed, Libya fell into chaos, civil war broke out and people started selling slaves in the streets.

It's not just past colonialism, it's the fact that this colonialism was so total and with such disregard for the indigenous people that these countries are plagued by war, political instability, and serious corruption. All of this, on top of the fact that they had no collateral but their mines and cheap labor, made it near impossible to get favorable loans, and so these countries have been stuck paying interest on the shitty loans they got. Sometimes that money went to a genuinely good infrastructure project or something. Other times, it went directly into the pockets of dictators and the national bourgeoisie. Either way, the result ends up the same: the interest becomes the only thing they can really afford to pay for. And now, their mines are no longer theirs, their labor is not compensated fairly, there will be more war as time goes on. The solution is clear. Africa must unite as one country and nationalize their mines. They will need to fight corruption.

  • @bruhmoment1208
    @bruhmoment1208 Před rokem +1024

As a Singaporean, I would have to say that both the geography and means of colonisation were very different.
Singapore obviously got far ahead by being situated in the Strait of Malacca and having a deep natural harbour. Now the maritime industry is not the only key to our success, but it provided much of the capital that could then be put into our education system, then our manufacturing sector, then amenities like public housing, our public education system etc.
Singapore is also small and easy to manage. In the past we have had race riots and gang activity, but that is all gone now. In so small an island there is nowhere to run.
In Africa (I’m painting in broad strokes here), the colonists were mostly interested in exploiting the resources of the region. Even as the colonists left those resources that had not been completely depleted continued to be mined and sold for European profit. In addition, many of the colonists had forced locals off their fertile lands and onto poorer lands that could not yield as much(er, I think this was mostly the case in South African diamond mines). In a continent full of hostile environments where the weather could be extremely volatile, many were reliant on subsistence farming, so you can imagine how this would devastate the locals. Many such policies, designed to benefit only a privileged minority continued to be propped up by subsequent dictators.
And just how did these dictators rise to power? Many such as Idi Amin came from the very regimes put in place to benefit only the colonisers. Mix this corruption with the fact that borders were arbitrarily drawn with no regard for tribal boundaries, and you have a recipe for civil unrest. Even better, have your regime actually emphasise these racial inequalities, just look at Rwanda(by the way I would just like to say that in spite of their past Rwanda seems to be on the right track nowadays).
Anyways I will have to agree that the victimhood mentality that is constantly perpetuated can only damage Africa. I think it is only useful in preventing further injustice because Europe is not going to pay reparations for what they did. But Singapore is just a bad example to compare it to. I think what Singapore did was unprecedented, and Africa is completely different, geographically speaking. If they want to improve, they will need to do something equally unprecedented.

As an African who has lived in Singapore, I think there is some gross over simplification going on here. Singapore does not have the same level of natural resources that even a small and relatively unspoken about African country has like Eswatini.
So when Singapore declared independence from Malaysia and essentially traded wealth for freedom, the only thing it had going for it were it's ports and its size from a community action perspective. It's ex colonisers all but abandoned the new nation to sink or swim, and with the blessing of good leadership, a sacrifice and community oriented, merchant minded populace who had undergone the horrors of fending off Japanese occupation, so knew to band together, they began their tiny nation.
Most African countries did not have the same "fantastic' group of problems. Their colonisers never truly left. The example that I use- Eswatini- is a great parallel. Their first monarch (really the one who united the nation) traded a quarter of the most mineral rich land to buy independence, land which is still being mined today, 2 generations later. With a generation of good leadership, Eswatini began to rise on its feet, with education starting to be a thing for a half starving land locked populace. The farming nation began to make use of its last resource -good soil - and governance structures were set up.
But unlike Singapore, Eswatini' s neighbours' problems interfered with the growing country. They were at the mercy of Apartheid South Africa and Mozambique. The living influences of colonisation knee capped the country's development. The same group of people who made money off the mines that King Sobhuza I was forced to sell to keep a semblance of independence, came in and bought sugar cane farms and always always always the economic power never sat with the populace, but rather with the people coming in who could set the price they wanted, because they had the economic links. So what was a fledgling nation supposed to do? Starve the people of their future? Their education? Or submit to the status quo, with the hope that in a future generation things might be better. So they did the latte, while secretly protecting the freedom fighters who would eventually go on to win out against the Apartheid government. It was a risky gamble for many reasons because they were surrounded by their colonisers, risked invasion in the now and the plan backfiring in the future if weak leadership was at the country's helm. The latter was Eswatini's unfortunate outcome.
While Singapore had 3 generations of strong leaders to navigate it out of its circumstance, Swaziland as it was known, only had arguably 1.5 generations of good leadership, combined with a faux independence that hamstrung them economically from the jump. Most other African countries had that economic power issue from the start, which is something Singapore largely avoided. Singapore is owned by Singaporeans, whereas even the African countries like Botswana that managed to avoid the hundreds of years old legacy of psychological horrors of colonisation, still have a 50/50 split of their largest income producing mineral with DeBeers - a colonial era agreement if ever there was one.
I love Singapore, I love each of these other countries I've used as examples. I've grown up in all of them. But the outcome for Africa is not the same, because our problems are not the same. It'll probably take another 2 generations for things to change, but even then I wonder if equal footing will ever be found. Because as we speak China, India and Russia are making similar economic land grabs.
Africa has never had that great luxury that we all need- to be left alone, regardless of the consequence, to simply be.

The mind sets in my country for example started to change in my generation.
My parents and my grandparents who were actually colonized suffered dehumanization which is very hard to overcome.
If you go to south Africa you will notice the difference between the white mindset and the colonized black mindset.
It will take two generations to overcome that. Also the most chances for education started coming in my parents time when they were already grown up.
Most of my age mates take care of their parents and their parents inherit them. quite backwards i know.
Because the lands were taken away from them and they didn't get a chance for education. They cannot lift themselves out of poverty.
Those countries developed got help to build themselves. We all need help ourselves.
Instead of help we get looters of our natural resources. How then can Africa build itself?

This sort of analysis is damaging. Yes, poorer countries have their own responsibilities. And it's also true that being dominated and ripped off by other countries contributed to the problem. Most of the countries that have been colonized, developed a habit of dependency and self doubt. That's why they don't even try to better themselves. But they are cherry-picking one country "Singapore" to give immunity to colonizers. It's like blaming the victim for not recovering their trauma by showing someone else who did, and calculatedly removing the focus from the original culprit. This is sick. this girl dont know that most african countries that are so called "independent" are not actually independent, we are still colonized, most of the african wealth actually go to the colonizers because of imposed laws, for example in tunisia (where am from) we sell olive oil, salt, and so much other stuff to france(our colonizers), at the cost of about 2% of what the citizens actually pay for it. tunisia could be so rich just of olive oil, we are one of the biggest if not the biggest producers of olive oil. also our education system is still colonzed, we follow the French curriculum, and we cant remove French as a subject even though 95% of the students fail the subject with grades below 7/20 , after year 10 every subject becomes in French. so students just drop out from school early just because they know they wont understand anything beyond year 10, because every thing is in French.
Ps: 95% could be an exaggeration, but you get the point. at my school, out of 100 student at my grade only about 30-20 pass. and i studied in a private school, now think about the public school.

Cross continental travel is a very new thing in the grand scale of things. If you look back, for thousands of years empires were formed in the African continent.
Your point about native Americans is ill informed. They were at war with each other long before Europeans came.
If African empires or Native American tribes had the technology of the European empires, the exact same thing would have happened sadly. Humanity was doomed for war, empires, colonisation and slavery given human nature.
A key reason to European empires being the one to colonise and enslave people was the industrial revolution. The reason why the industrial revolution occurred where it did is a mixture between geographical reasons like climate and types of natural resources, religion and many more.
Sadly, going to war in order to gain resources or land is a very human thing. It has been done all over the world, particularly in the past. However, it is also nice as it shows nobody is different because of race, we are just a product of our environment.

The Rise or Fall of country has multiple factors - economic, geographic, corruption, leadership, foreign influence, natural disasters, education, circumstances, man and many more all play a role.
You can't compare that Africa doesn't have enough fresh water, but so is Singapore - means all because of corruption. No, hell no, not all African countries have sea boards in the first place. Not all of them are strategically based for trading way.
It's really respectable that Singapore managed to be what it is today. Tax-free - means more foreign investment, pharmaceutical companies investment - means demand for professionalism and skills, new ideas - means needs in better education, strategic port - means better chances for retail and enterpot (buying for the purposes to sell).

Edit: don't bother going through the comments, half of them are deleted and you won't understand most the arguments bc of that

Comparing singapore to other countries is totally absurd, it is half the size of delhi and governing such small state is really easy.
