I was actually disappointed that she didn’t know there were Latina, Barbies, and Barbies of a lot of other ethnicities since the late 80s. I think she tried to give an intelligent sounding answer for why she didn’t play with Barbies when she was younger, but it just made her look really ignorant of how diverse the Mattel Barbie franchise has been for many decades now.

Barbies were considered uncool at my school too. I still played with them. Played with them a lot until 15. Had them hidden when my friends came over. Had our daughter at 29, and I buy Barbies and the Dreamhouse for her.

I was actually disappointed that America didn’t know that the Barbie franchise has actually been really diverse since the 1990s. Barbie has always had a Latino Barbie named Theresa, a black Barbie named Krystie and an Asian Barbie. Also, the Barbie franchise did an entire international collection showcasing Barbies from all across the world in the 1990s, I think America tried to give an intelligent sounding answer to why she didn’t play with Barbies as a child, but she just made herself sound ignorant of the franchises, actual history
@@AdrielVary Growing up, even with other races' Barbies, the marketing or hype was always for the main blonde Barbie and what was at the forefront of our awareness as children. Nevertheless, I always wanted one; I had to play at my best friend's house, where I only found out there was also a Black Barbie. She may not be correct about the actual history, but she is about a child's feelings and perceptions.

I was the Marketing Manager of the 30,000 Sq Ft Dreamhouse Experience at Mall of America... the premise for this movie in 2014 & 2014 when Mattel decided to diversify. So great to see the finale of their vision to rebrand Barbie. Great experience. Can not wait to see this movie!!

@alejandromolinac I'm decades older than America -- but she, born in 1984, would have been a teenager when Mattel finally started manufacturing dolls that were supposed to be Latino (the first ones, in the 1990s, were clearly just white Barbies with dark hair and "ethnic" clothing).
In her interview with Refinery29 "She said she was trying to wrap her head 'around the fact that somebody had expanded the Barbie world [to a place] where there was space for somebody like me'. 'And not because I had transformed into some unattainable expectation,' she said, 'but because our culture has shifted to make space for people like us'."
