  • Sera’s never truly fit in among her people, the Cerulean. But when she’s chosen as the sacrifice to break the tether that holds the City Above the Sky, she realizes just how important she may be. Even if her survival was an accident. All in their utopia is not what it seems, apparently.

Sera Lighthaven has always felt as if she didn’t quite belong among her people, the Cerulean, who live in the City Above the Sky. She is curious about everything-especially the planet that her City is magically tethered to-and can’t stop questioning things. Sera has always longed for the day when the tether will finally break and the Cerulean can move to a new planet.
But when Sera is chosen as the sacrifice to break the tether, she feels betrayed by everything in which she’d been taught to trust. In order to save her City, Sera must end her own life.
But something goes wrong, and Sera survives, ending up on the planet below in a country called Kaolin. Sera has heard tales about the dangerous humans who live here, and she quickly learns that these dangers were not just stories.

I read the first five chapters through First 5 and was hopelessly hooked.
I got the book and finished it faster then I thought it would take me. And this book is no doubt a very good read. Loved every word of it.

I heard that there were some problematic things about this book relating to sexuality

Being queer and having read the book, I can see where someone might get that impression, but in full context I completely disagree. The MC is a girl from a female-only alien race with a homonormative culture, meaning it’s assumed she will want to fall in love with other women like her moms and her friends. From the beginning she knows there’s something different about her as she’s never had a crush or desired a relationship like most of her people do, but it’s not until later that she meets humans and meets a boy and understands that there’s another option than loving women.
Now, if written poorly or without nuance, the MC’s journey could’ve ended up being problematic, but imo it really worked in this book. I’ll admit that even though I was really liking the story, this aspect did nag at me until we meet another of the main characters who turns out to be a foil to Sera (our MC): a human girl who’s gay but forced to find a husband by her heteronormative society/controlling father. Their two arcs work so well in tandem as both girls learn to accept themselves and live as their true selves in the face of criticism and social pressure. The whole book is filled with themes of identity and self discovery, and of taking your destiny in your own hands and breaking out of abusive and harmful cycles perpetuated by family and society.
P.S. I know your comment is 5yo, but I come back to these epic reads explains vids every once in a while since they stopped making them and this is the first comment I saw and I felt compelled to reply. So if you’re still around and read this: it’s a good book, and so is the sequel. Read it!

This book is offensive. The MC discovers that she's straight!
