From Season 3 Episode 6 "Bomb On Board": December 11, 1994 - En route to Tokyo from Manila, the pilots aboard PA 434 are jolted by an explosion. An explosion had gone off in the cabin and the damage is extensive: there’s a two-foot hole in the fuselage and cables linking the cockpit to the ailerons and wing flaps are severed. Far from their destination, the pilots have no option but to attempt an emergency landing. The flight crew rein in the unwieldy plane and land it safely.
One of the passengers, a Japanese businessman, perished in the blast. The explosion was located directly under his seat and severed him in two. Ten other passengers were also injured. Miraculously these were the only casualties.

Yes.. A lot of people say: Why does the Philippines has so many security guards.. And maybe not respect them..
They really dont earn a lot, yet work a lot and often get misused in terms of having to do additional jobs to their original job, being a page boy, serving food, carrying luggage, taking phones, and other stuff.. for a fraction of those what others earn..
Yet they often bring themselves in danger when really something happens and cant even carry real guns with them and other stuff because they are not law enforcement.
Time to respect them more, maybe make the day where the doorman called the police the day of the security people, and honoring them a bit more (worldwide)
As a flight attendant, that’s obviously one of your worst fears to see one of your passengers in that way. God Bless the crew and RIP to that young man, he is also a hero.

Props to the pilots. Remaining completely calm and getting the aircraft to safety. Even after a bomb exploded, someone died, and they couldn't turn, they held out. They have my respect.
Watching this from Kenya and my heart breaks for the young Japanese engineer who dies. These pilots and crew are such incredible people. You can feel the sense of duty they have towards their passengers. We thank God so many survived this horrific senseless near fatal flight . We'll done guys . We salute you all
Yes even the victom could not be saved or helped at least he was being touched and comforted by another and not alone at the moment he passed. Those actions in themselves demonstrate the courage of others. Many shy away from performing those acts of love towards another, let alone when that person is at their most vulnerable.

The camaraderie and maturity of Captain Reyes is what made the CRM work possible. He was guiding the entire crew without any anger or irritation while troubleshooting the issues and lead from the front. Terrific Airmanship by the Capt.!!
He's incredible! One of the best pilots I've seen on this show...unlike the ones who make dumb mistakes or worse (intentionally crashing a plane).
Love hearing from the pilots themselves. Such amazing training and perseverance. That poor crew member who had to pretend to care for the dead passenger. God I hope she got help for the trauma.

I mean...you need to train it, and those treats plus other food and housing for the dog are not free. But yes, considering the officer partnered with the dog basically gets a pet for free, there's a lot more expensive ways to sniff out explosives.
Respect for the pilot and his crew, the pilot acted calmly and wisely despite the level of tension he was under.
Maybe It was because he was a former Navy pilot. And he went through a lot of training as well as a navy pilot so maybe he was taught what to do if a plane has a bomb. And he probably worked around bombs to know what to do. And he was probably taught what to do if Obama explodes while being on a plane as well so all of the training that he probably went through it kicked in

Eric Nixon. I'm happy that you mentioned the aircrew. They did an excellent job of administering first aid. That was a stroke of genius the way they tended to the deceased passenger...all in the hopes of keeping the other passengers calm by pretending that the deceased passenger was still alive.

I have to acknowledge the Pilots' Professionalism. They knew they were in a tough situation, and they pulled through.

The way the FBI agent, Frank Pellegrino, grins while speaking of such horrific events is just bizarre.
And those pilots' skill in landing a plane without steering control is just incredible, and shows the high level of competence. Who'd have thought of using the tilt of the plane to steer? Just so well-done!
I wanted to add the same thing about the FBI agent. Why would you grin when talking about horrific events? It's good to be proud of yourself for catching an important bit of information that helped the investigation (the Casio watch thingy) - but it's bizarre to maintain the grin throughout the whole interview

I've watched this and the guy SITTING on the bomb. Man the things that dude had to go through and he lived for a few minutes after oh man that is horrifying.
It was mercy he went so fast.. imagine living through with only your upper body intact!!!
I know, right? When that plane left the runway, he was healthy. Two hours later, though, all of a sudden, his lower half was missing, and for just a few minutes, he was aware. Imagine what kinds of thoughts flew through his mind. How unfair life is.

The Filipino police didn't stumble on anything. It was solid police work where they wanted to investigate the room. Now contrast that with the FBI finding out people want to learn how to fly planes but not land them. Filipinos be proud.

Ramsey Yousef was incarcerated in the most secure unit inside the USP Florence ADMAX in Colorado called Range 13 in which he was incarcerated under the so-called non human contact restriction. He even didn't take his one hour of recreation inside the ADX Florence supermax prison for several years because he didn't allow to let the officers to see his body because of the procedure of the strip search in which he has to strip down his body completely! During this time he was visited by the chaplain - an orthodox priest during this particular time - and he (Ramsey Yousef) asked if he could get a Bible to read it and to study it and because of his studies of the Bible he has renounced Islam and converted to Christianity and he even eats pork and is taking his recreation times since this time! Sure, the BOP and the Justice Department do not believe in his actions of becoming a believer in Christianity and they are thinking that this was only a trick to get more freedoms inside the ADX Florence supermax prison, but he has since then left the Range 13 unit and is now in one of the General Population Units and can be together in the recreation yard with a small group of other inmates to talk with while he has his one hour of recreation inside a slightly bigger cage as his own cell in the Gen-pop Unit there! The shrapnel that shot up into his body would've probably shot through the roof and sides of the plane if the seat was empty. His body stopped most of it from damaging the plane.

@@AverageTigerTank Ed Reyes died around 2007 or 2008, he was in his 70s. He died of prostate cancer. The other pilot just died last year in 2021 he was 73. I don’t know what his cause of death was though.

0:21 the first time I traveled by plane I was 4 since then my family and I traveled very frequently and every single time since I can remember I always would look down my seat searching for a bomb. My family and friends laugh at me but this is the prove that the tradition I decided to follow 20 years ago was the right one.
Imagine if this man just like me decided to inspect his seat before the plane was on air? Also doesn’t hurt to make sure that your safety jacket is there and not missing for some reason.
Back in 1979 i was flying from heathrow to aldergrove belfast. Before i was allowed to board the plane my luggage was searched, they took my cleansing lotion from me which was less than 100ml. Also we didn't take off because there was more luggage than passengers. So we all had to disembark and pick out our luggage, the 3 suitcases left over when then taken away checked and blown up. Which proved to be explosive. Because of the security of the staff we survived. Shame they weren't so vigorous back in 1994.
The aircraft was not used in passenger service after the incident. The plane returned to service as a cargo airliner. The incident was a test run for Operation Bojinka, which was uncovered by the American government in early 1995. The operation was the precursor to the 9/11 attacks, which was the deadliest terrorist attack in American history.

A few years ago I was on board a THAI 747 getting ready to fly from Athens to Bangkok. It was 4 PM and after the air hostess have closed the door the plane wouldn't move for almost an hour, then all of a sudden the captain announced that we were all to disembark the aircraft and go back to the terminal. Everybody was frustrated and had initially thought the aircraft had some sort of technical issues and followed suit (the captain never mentioned technical issue as he made his announcement on the PA) But we began to sense that something was wrong as flight crews hastened each passenger to leave the plane quickly like they were in a rush to empty the plane. Inside the terminal we were all gathered in one lounge and watched in disbelief as airport authority towed the plane with a pushback truck away from the terminal building followed by several firetrucks with water hoses pointed at the aircraft. This is when we realised that this was not a technical issue with the aircraft. We were stuck in the terminal building for 6 hours with rumours spreading around that an "extra luggage" had made its way onto the aircraft cargo hold without the passenger boarding. Then at 10:00 pm they brought a bus and drove us to the stricken 747, the bus drove further and further from the main airport area so much so that I thought we were going outside the airport!?! Then finally they let us out onto a remote tarmac right on the edge of the airfield. Luggages were strewn about everywhere on the ground, they told each of us to go out one by one and identify our luggages and show our boarding pass to authorities then reboard the plane. This went on for another hour or two as each checked luggage is reloaded back onto the plane. Then we finally took off never to be told whether they've actually found the luggage that the terrorist have planted or not. The flight that was supposed to land in the early morning ended up in Bangkok in late afternoon. No apology or compensation was ever made and the incident never made it to any media outlet. This was by far the worst flight experience in my life but I'm also glad we didnt fall victim to the terrorist's plot.
After seeing this, I can see now why they only allow very small bottles onto flights. Shampoo, toothpaste, etc.

Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie. Air India 182 off the coast of Ireland. And while it wasn't a terrorist bomb, there was an explosion on board, TWA 800 over the Atlantic.
All of these planes had a bomb explode in flight and all of them crashed soon after.
So, the fact that they managed to land it is quite impressive. Yes someone died, but that is better than everyone dying.

This actually makes me SLIGHTLY less annoyed with the TSA-I get the shoes and liquids thing now.
And I’m not offended by body scanners, they’ll get no thrills from me. I get it’s all part of the bigger picture. But I wish they wouldn’t hire temp employees. Having done that, retail, etc, I wasn’t super committed to excellence. Pay them better and hire the best! Like he said, there’s always another terrorist perfecting their craft.

Flew a number of different airlines; I can attest Philippine Airlines pilots are one of the best pilots in the world. Almost always a smooth landing.

They don't check the airplane between flights? On school busses they have to go through bus after pickup and dropping off. I'm surprised to learn it's not required on a plane or did they just fail to do this? They'd have seen the device taped underneath the seat if they had.

Congratulations to the engineers who designed and made that aircraft, as the light structure was still strong enough to withstand that explosion for which it was not designed. If that engineered structure did not hold the additional created forces , all people would have died, including that brave pilot and crew. Also, it was remarkable how the redundant engineering systems available to the pilot left him with enough control to land safely. Every flight necessitates the teamwork of a group of people depending on each other.
Unfortunately engineering in the wrong hands can hurt many people and no matter how one looks at it, engineering is the reason why the world has become so polluted and so dangerous and paradoxically, it is engineering that will find solutions to the problems we have created for ourselves. If that flight did not contain the damaging bomb, it would still have burnt over 100 Tons of fuel which would need to pollute over three tons of air per second for four hours ( approx. 40,000 tons of air) and that is a lot of pollution damaging to our environment. Flying is not all that innocent, and as long as it is convenient for us, we really do not care what damage to our environment it produces in addition to shipping, Industry and coal and oil, atomic and gas burning electrical power stations. We tend to focus on the damage to us that can be pinpointed to a terrorist and a criminal, when in reality there are more invisible criminals in our society, flying over people's heads with 100 tons of fuel, without their permission, all because a law is passed that they can do it!
yeah, and if you wear cologne or perfume, or ANYTHING scented, you're causing pollution all around you. People with asthma and allergies or MCS, may have a life-threatening situation when they are exposed to the ever-increasing toxicity of chemicals used in today's "fragrances", you know, "clean & fresh?" 😷☠😱
You should also congratulate the pilots!
