It would be far more expensive without the stairs. The other route to that lookout is far more dangerous and causes much more environmental harm when used. Already people are starting to use the other route and the damage to that trail has been severe.
For all the hikers, I would force the the politicians both state and city as well as county to make a law to ban any lawsuits of people who hike anywhere in the state of Hawaii!!!
The USA is litigious so it's only a matter of time where most things everywhere will be shut down. I'm grateful that in my youth I was an avid hiker taking in waterfalls and trails that are meant for healthy individuals. Just incredible. The best way to keep the stairs going is to get wealthy sponsors, charge users and make sure you've got a trillion $ insurance coverage. We're going extinct so cherish the memories like the gushing streams in Kahana valley before the state capped the water sources and upside down falls when they really existed
