The Coghlan Survival in a can is a Supplement to your gears. I you carry an SOL Scout Survival Kit, this kit would be an addition to that kit.. Many life-Saving items are missing. The pen and paper is to write a note to the rescuer to which direction that you are going because you left to seek for water. Thanks.
Nice review, the good thing about this kit is that it is completely waterproof.
I made a DIY version of this a while ago
I do like that aspect about it tbh. I’d like to maybe make my own someday to sell but it’s just so unrealistic to make something good that’s so small. So much missing. For a night? Sure. For a weekend, maybe. Long term? Nah lol

These are more of novelty convenience kits. But it does lay the foundation for discussion.

The paper and pencil could be used to leave behind a note at the shelter saying who you are and if you try to walk out. To indicate which direction you headed off to. This kit might just be a good addition to a better kit to give some redundancy.
I can agree with that for sure. It’s not great, but with my skillset I could probably do fine with it as long as I had a water bottle and filter. There aren’t very many scenarios where I see myself wandering aimlessly around the woods lol 😂

Could have used the container for boiling water and used the candle underneath it
I just released an overnight video with another version of it. Not only would I not trust it as far as what turbo cancer chemicals are in it, due to the runoff of streams here it’s not safe. Also, I couldn’t get it to boil on hot coals, so I doubt the candle would bring it to a boil. Maybe I’ll try that as a short though. Seems interesting

I could see it, maybe if you had a map with you. How would you use just a pencil and paper for land nav?
@martinwagnerproductions record your azimuth and pace count. If you know the degree of which you traveled, subtract 180° to get your reverse azimuth. Just walk the same pace count on your reverse azimuth to end back where you started. Did I make sense? It's easier to show people harder to explain.

The pencil is way too big and takes up space. A stub would be better.
@dirtyscoundrel2013 I maybe would have replaced it with asmall golf pencil, but that doesn't have much to do with the size. I would remove the candle, nails, duct tape, signal mirror, bread ties and replaced the whistle with something smaller. I had to look up the contents of this kit so it could be different? I would also replace the matches with a fero rod, but that is based on my area and my skill sets. I have assembled my own survival kit based on tools I have used over the years. It is nowhere as compact (size of a 38oz non insulated stainless Nalgene with nesting cup) or as inexpensive as this kit (mine is about $300 USD), but it has served me well.

@@martinwagnerproductions I'm sure they would vite expiration dates if asked. But for someone who just throws that in their pocket and thinks they're covered it could be a disaster. I saw a lot of sheer stupid during my time with search & rescue. Good review of the product.
@@dirtyscoundrel2013 I'm absolutely sure of it. Some people are allergic to iodine as well, would be a bad day to figure it out once you need it. Next video I might actually build a simple water purification set up, coal, sand, rocks.

@@dirtyscoundrel2013 lol salty. And yes it doesn’t remove chemicals, just makes it drinkable. When in doubt boil obviously, but the charcoal filter doesn’t remove farm runoff chemicals, pcbs, etc. when hunting I run a Katadyn that does remove all of that.

For an emergency kit, absolutely not. But, if you wanted something small, waterproof, fit in your back pocket, it’s perfect
