That script looks factory. Excellent job, Bob.

Very easy to work on engine. Keep up with oil changes because the balance shafts can sieze. Beware of oil burning because the oil control rings start to clog up with carbon. Replacing the tension rings with fixed waffle-style rings is the only fix. Also do the timing chain. I'm sure as a mechanic you know about this but the pre-2013 2nd gen EA888 engines have bad timing chain tensioners which could fail at any time should be upgraded to the new tensioner. All gen EA888 engines have timing chains which stretch every 100k miles. Replace them every 100k - 130k miles. Make sure the new chain is the upgraded one with staggered links. Should check it now at 122k (check camshaft phase adaptation value). Anything > -4.5 and the chain is stretching. Other than than that, its a great engine. Throw an APR stage 1 tune and you'll have fun!
These are the reasons why it is _not_ a great engine. Great engines aren't so poorly designed. In a market that was so saturated with much better alternatives, the EA888 is... not the best. If I had to rely on one it would be the 2.5 I5. Better yet, just get a cheaper turbocharged Volvo I5 from the 2000s which has no design flaws at all and is even easier to work on
@@MrCarGuy Those 2.5L can't gain an extra 70+ horsepower with a simple 30 minute ECU flash. The balanceshafts sieze if someone doesn't keep up with their oil changes. Oil burning and piston rings was a common problem on all manufacturers who switched to variable tension piston rings hoping to reduce emissions. Timing chain tensioner... yeah VW fucked up with that one, though new revised tensioner was introduced in 2013. Timing chains stretch on a lot of turbocharged 2.0L cars now, just VW got a lot of the heat since VW group was first to start the turbocharged 2.0L engine movement. This car comes with a DSG dualclutch which is an insanely quick tranny with many TCU tunes, and engine with easy ECU flashes can get much power out of.
@@mydimeisup5103 bro i think you know much about cars can you recommend me some good hatchbacks that is also reliable?
That dent by the gas filler door likely caused by someone driving off with the nozzle still in.
Those are fun little cars especially with the manual trans.
Looks good for a bug wizard. The car will be good as long as you keep it, but you seem to change vehicles quite often. That gas guzzler charger was not good in this economy, but I am sure it was fun to get on it. Take care, the new camera worked great
I have a '12 Beetle with a 2.5L and 5 speed manual and love it. I bought it new, it's paid off. I've had lots of cars and this thing is just outstanding. It's bulletproof.
The 2.5 is way more reliable than the 1.8.
I'm new to your channel. I hope your knee gets better. I'm a disabled veteran and know what living with everyday pain is like. God bless you. Cute little car you have there.
I bought a 2013 Turbo last year with 82k miles, and I've already put 14k more on it in the past year. It's a fantastic little car! It's mighty quick and has a lot of character, although it does have some paint issues here and there (Florida car). Mine's also pretty loaded with the DSG automatic, a sunroof, and the Fender audio package, so it perfectly fits my needs. I'm glad Wizard's giving these the recognition they deserve.
Cool ... is it Mexican ? VWs are nice, especially used with low price and good condition đđ»đđ»

This was my favorite update of the New Beetle. I liked how they brought back the original body shape. Fantastic car!!
Agreed! I'm not a fan of the original New Beetle, but I -love- this version of it. At college, someone had one of this bodystyle with a baby blue paint and old school looking dish bowl wheels and I would always stare at it.
@@stephenreed3381 yes!! They look really good with the vintage style wheel covers. Like the one Wizard showed on his phone.
This is a Beetle, not a New Beetle.
Not exactly the original shape, though, is it?

I am not sold on new vw's but, I would rather drive my 86 Golf diesel I had years ago, it was a 5 speed and loved it. Only problem I had was the water pump, you had to remove the timing belt cover and to get to the pump. I am glad you like you Beetle, Car Wizard, I am hooked on your blogs, thank you.
Wizard one thing you forgot to mention was the placement of the battery towards the back of the engine bay. This is designed in case of a frontal collision where the battery can unlock the doors and put the emergency lights on.
I had a Black 2018 SE Turbo Beetle and sadly wrecked it in January. It was one of my most favorite daily driver cars I've ever owned. I did a few modifications like exhaust and tune and that car was really fun to drive and was peppy enough to make it exciting when you wanted to go fast. I loved how it looked and I was happy to drive it every day.
Congrats on your beetle! I've had my 2012 turbo for about 6 years now and I've loved every second. I added an APR stage 1 tune about a year ago and it made a huge difference. My 2 year old daughter is obsessed with the boost increase! I hope you enjoy your time with it, thanks for everything you do!
I would get a tune on mine, but it would entail a clutch upgrade đŹ
I bought a 2016 VW Beetle Classic on January 2017. I am at the 5 1/2 years mark and the only issue I had with it so far, is that on the second winter (i.e. 2018) of ownership, the dealer replaced an actuator for the passenger side power window on warranty. Beyond that, all I do for maintenance are regular oil changes twice a year in the spring and the fall. This car has been one of the most reliable and enjoyable cars I have ever known. I will keep that car until it no longer runs.
Cool. I'm having problems with my R36 and the dealer in my area sucks. Is it Mexican ? Mine is German
@@babagandu Mine is Mexican.
I'm from Brazil and I have a 2013 red one, but it has xenon headlights, sunroof and Fender sound too!
It's a wonderful car!
It has 22.5k miles!
Wonderful choice Wizard!
The new camera looks great! I always thought the GoPro 7 had a very yellow-shifted hue to it, and a very pronounced fish-eye effect because of its wide-angle nature anyway. Hope the new camera works out. And nice swap! Neat as the charger is, that's definitely not a viable or affordable driver in 2022 compared to the Beetle. Hope it serves you well.
I've had 4 of these. Make sure you change the timing chain tensioner for the latest version.
The Turbo stickers were a dealer fit option, as was the Turbo badge.
The paint is rubbish on them and stone chips if you look at it, so I'm not surprised the bumper is peppered.
The first edition cars came with the turbo on the door from the factory. The turbo on wizards car looks aftermarket. The chrome Turbo badge on the trunk is factory. Iâve looked at hundreds of these cars and Iâve never seen one with the off center turbo vinyl like that. The factory Turbo vinyl is smaller font and more centered on the door. I have a 2017 convertible with 6,000 miles. it has the turbo badge on the trunk. Love these cars!!
@@JakeDrives1 is it Mexican or German ??
@@babagandu I believe all of the 12up were built at the Puebla Mexico plant. :sad face:
@@JakeDrives1 Yeah the factory turbo decal on the doors has a different font I believe, so this one is aftermarket, though it matches the badge font (more like the Porsche font) better.
I think the high price in beetles has to do with the mileage and that the beetle is no longer made. I actually brought the final addition beetle 2019 from walser auto campus there in Wichita, KS, back in July and love it. I want a yellow convertible beetle their hard to find.
Iâm on my 19th BeetleâŠmy last car. Preferred the old air-cooled ones, but these are a lot safer and WAY FASTER! $36,000 for my gorgeous 2019 Final EditionâŠđđ€
Having started my journey with a '67 VW Squareback dual carb and a couple years later, a '69 Squareback with Bosch fuel injection and my first set of radial tires (Michelin XZX 6.00-15), I feel that cloth seats are much better than those vinyl on hot, humid days, and admit that 65 hp provided great learning experiences. Glad to see you with the antitheft device that defeats drivers unfamiliar, the system promoted by the Manual Gear Transmission Preservation Society. I've nearly added 8k miles in my year with a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual, a slightly larger engine than my new '84 pre-Tacoma had, but the trucks have become larger and heavier, as have the drivers getting older... The truck just passed 26k miles on Monday. Dad took their Toyotas to the dealer for regular service, and I've been doing the same, as Toyota Diagnostic Technicians really like these clean trucks.
I have added the AC drain extension mod so condensate water no longer drains on the frame to cause rust, and NHOU frame treatment last spring. (I learned to fly with an Aeronca Champ with a whopping 85 hp Continental, like flying the VW!)
My wife has a 2014 Beetle TDI. Got it 4 years ago with 21K miles on it for $14K. It's a real hoot to drive! Get's about 36-40mpg. We're only up to 40K miles on it. Still feels like a new car. Your new Beetle looks like a rock solid car! Enjoy it!
Couple goals. The only thing Mrs Wizard said when he pulled up was âShockingâ Theyâre a great team. I wish you the best and for many more awesome videos to come. The manual is absolutely soft and smooth. I have a â15 A3 1.4tfsi with the manual. No effort needed to drive, even in traffic.
"Direct Injection" and coming up to mileage where the intake ports will be needing cleaning from EGR.
It's like half of the Audi V8 that you hate Wizard.
Looks great Wizard! Many of the 2012+ Beetles are subject to airbag recalls, so be sure to check for that. My 2013 Beetle is waiting for that right now; it also came with dented rocker panels, which seem to be a common problem with the new Beetles. But "Otto" is still a blast to drive!
i love these newer beetles so much, they just look great and i love that decal in the porsche font
I love Beetles myself. I had a 2002 for 14.5 years until it got to be too pricey to maintain. My wife and I agree we will have another someday, and it will be a convertible.
BTW, I have spotted the C3 Corvette in the background in a few videos and wondering if there will be a video on it? Thanks.
Pretty fun cars! Basically a mk6 GTI. You might want to check to see if the timing chain tensioner has been updated. They are known to fail at any time. Also the HPFP, diverter valve & cold start misfires due to carbon buildup. They are good cars as long as they are properly maintained.
I worked for a VW dealer in the UK when these came out, we had a demonstrator that was done out like Herbie (obviously) but it was the 1.4 tsi twin charged engine which didn't last very long. Fender sound system though and I loved having it, got so much attention I loved driving it. So much more interesting than just another boring Golf. Good luck with it, I agree that they are a great looking car, very nice although if I buy one I would have the drop top :)
Imagine if in the future he manages to get his hands on a Beetle RSi with the VR6 đ
The new cam looks really good! Nice upgrade! I can definitely see how 9 mpg would get tiresome. That's pretty low.
Thanks for the new ride ("Shocking!") review, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard! âïžâ€ïžđđšđŠ
Mrs. Wizard: 'Shocking!' LOL. This is a nice choice. After any front end paint work, this car is the perfect candidate for paint protection film to try and keep the paint as nice as possible. No buttons on the steering wheel for any functions. VW is cheaping out! An interior detail at Van Go might be nice.
Hey wizard the dji is a great choice over the gopros! Their software is so much more reliable then the gopro software i switched to one also and i no longer have random camera recordings stop and freeze and reset mid video!
I just spent the weekend replacing the Water Pump and radiator on the 2.0 TSI in my 2013 CC, and I have a love/hate relationship with the TSI engine. Watch the oil leaks especially on the front side of the engine as oil can swell the gaskets on the water pump and blowout the plastic water pumps causing a leak. Also, there are no cam cover gaskets on a TSI. The Cam cradles use the special VW sealant which they are right proud of. Looking forward to any updates on the New Beetle.
I always loved the new beetles, such a shame they didn't sell as well as the older onces, very beautiful indeed and love the new camera, far better than your old one
The primary reason is there are practically no aftermarket mods for them. In the community you don't see tricked out new beetles anywhere except for a few who do it because they can. In my county alone there are 4 dozen MKI-MKIVs kicking around.
Car Wizard, consider getting an updated VW RCD 330 Plus Radio that has CarPlay, since the Beetle has such a nice high-up radio location. These RCD 330 radios often get removed from VW cars in China when owners retrofit aftermarket Android systems, so most of the ones on eBay would be "good-as-new" used stock and are available relatively cheap.
You could also look at ones that have been modified to have the USB routed around the back (by default they only have front panel USB) so that you could install the USB port out of the way and out of sight. Installation is super simple, (plug and play) and it even supports installing and wiring in a reverse camera too, if you wanted to add one.
This simple change should give a nice update to the already comfortable interior.
I just got home from a road trip vacation that included a drive across Kansas. If you're complaining about the cost of filling up the Charger, it really gets horrible mileage since Kansas had some of the cheapest gas on the trip. I give it 4 weeks until it's sold or whenever Euroasian Bob gets the next cool car đ
I got my driver's licence driving one of these. It was a manual and 1.2 litre TSI. Those bigger TSI engines are not all that common here in Europe, atleast not in my home country. A really pleasant and an easy car to drive. The clutch especially is really smooth and easy to use, really nice for someone who is learning how to drive a manual.
I wish you the Best with your Beetle, Mr. Wizard. And I think the new camera did a good job filming. Hope the Charger's new owner enjoys it.
Wizard, I understand the affection for the Beetle, but I wouldnât have departed with the yellow Charger. That Charger was not molested or modded like so many of them are. I think the Charger would go up in value over time due to the unique color, V-8 (which is going away), and again, pretty much stock. You and the wife take care, and I really enjoy the videos! She cracked me up at the beginning of the video when you announced getting another carâŠ..âshockingâ.
Didn't it have a lot of miles on it? That one specifically wouldn't be of much value

I love the Turbo decal on the side in the old ''73 911 Carrera style. My Father-in-law owned a '73 Carrera at one point. Very cool you all stepping up your production value. I think you'll enjoy DJI camera and maybe even the gimbal if you have that option also.
I've got a first generation and seconds gen beetle and the third, by far, are the best interior and the fit and finish is superior.
The 1st and 2nd gens fall apart inside and the plastic pieces disintegrate after a while.
Replaced several plastic hose couplers with metal after they faded away and ceacked.
Otherwise, it is a pleasant vehicle to drive.
I wish mine were a stick.
My first car was a 51' Plymouth $25 took 2 weeks to get it running.(1972). After owning many different VW.s and pickups over the years I found my all-time favorite. 2015 Beetle hardtop. Great handling, fast. and very fuel efficient. I just replaced 2 broken front springs and struts (not as easy as the Rabbits). Currently has 75K miles purchased 2017 for $12k

Funny, my aunt used to have a 2000ish yellow Beetle with the same "turbo" graphics down the sides. Only hers was a turbodiesel lol 5 or 6 speed manual. Fantastic car, she bought it in 2009-2010 to save money on her 60 mile commute, its been super reliable and does 45mpg. She retired and gave it to her grandson who is using it for the same purpose, it has to have 300,000+ miles on it by now. I'm amazed at how nice it looks, interior is clean, no rips in the seats, paint looks presentable, not a single spec of rust on the body(ohio car), but I bet if you put it on a lift its got some flavor underneath.
Great video Wizard. I originally always used a manual, but the automatic transmission on this year of VW is actually a computer controlled manual, dual clutch transmission.
I have a Jetta Sportwagen with the automatic and it is a huge upgrade.
You may want to look for an automatic, because of the performance.
The automatic requires oil changes every 80,000 miles which is expensive. But since you have a shop you can do it easily on a lift for cheap.
The DSG (manual shifted automatically) requires a fluid and filter change every 40k
Absolutely love this new gen beetle đđđ» I looked up some a while ago for me too , hope this one is a keeper this time around , the DJI camera is pretty nice too they make good tech other than GoPro
The camera looks great, you have come so far since your first videos. Those stone chips on the front are a good sign that the miles are highway miles and not city miles, it even so it does seem excessive almost like the front bumper had a poor quality paint job in the past.. still itâs easy and not too expensive to fix at the same time as that dent. Itâs a nice car and the correct color for a German car also. The only surprise is that you bought it without looking underneath, but to be fair you did buy from a friend.

Iâve always loved this generation of the new beetle the best. Such a cool little car and itâs a manual thatâs really cool!
I thought the bugs were alright when they came back out for North America in around 99/00. When they showed off these longer nose kind of call backs to the older designs, I fell in love instantly and eventually got a manual turbo model myself, albeit with the candy white color and black accents over the silver. I haven't really had any issues I can't address in my shop, from my experience they're after the 00's era of wiring issues I ran into with a Passat wagon (to be fair, the Turbo Bug I had before like Wizard's never really had any problems outside of common issues, maybe it was a different factory?).
Had a 2010 CC which was the same drivetrain and got 33MPG highway and 25+MPG city. Got even better when I upgraded to Audi R8 Red Top coils. That little BUG-ger, and the GLIs of the same years, are finally starting to get known as theyâre just GTIâswithout the GTI premium. Plus, you can APR tune these to 300 daily HP, easy.
Also, PLEEAAASSEEEE cover that Sportsmobile.

When you switch to the other camera after you load your car the picture got darker. Very nice car always wanted a beetle I drive a 98 Subaru 5 speed manual 2.2 naturally aspirated. But I would like to get a newer beautiful I don't know if I'd want to get gas or diesel but definitely turbo manual. Keep up the great work guys stay safe, healthy and God bless you all
I love your new Beetle. I am personally on new beetle number 5, a 2015 TDI drop top. I also have a 71 beetle. congrats, driver and enjoy.
Perfect timing on this video! I have a 16-year-old who is about to get a drivers license and really likes this body style VW beetle. Of course, the one we get will be an automatic but I wanted to ask about the reliability of that 1.9 L diesel?
That first âsmaller muffler exhaustâ is called a resonator and itâs practically useless. It is intended to keep the decibels under legal noise. You can cut it out & add a pipe to see if it will change your mind.
The Gen 1 & 2 have their quirks. They build up carbon deposits quicker then the newer gen3 which is on the 13+ as a 1.8T. Engine will start having your typical carbon build up symptoms too.
Interesting to note is the diesel version of them are the most expensive for some odd reason. Most rare are the 2015, ea288 tdi, manual & convertible. Only the 2015s 2.0 tdi have a warranty of 11 years & 162k miles since the fix was initiated by VW. Maybe your next beetle will be tdi haha. Good luck đ
I been watching your videos because after not having my own car for 5 years, i'm almost 70, i'm getting my own car just for me for the first time in my life (no considerations for kids, wife, dogs, nada but me). I been watching all your videos to try and help me decide. If a beetle is good for the wizard then it's good enough for me.
Turbo Beetle, nice ride, I think David has an affinity for VWs and quirky Nissans.
G'day Wizard, from the land of OZ, I recently purchased an interesting vehicle made by the VAG. It is a 2013 Skoda Superb 191 FSI AWD with the VW R36 engine. It only had 65k miles. It has a very interesting trunk and an umbrella built into the rear door. I got a cracker of a deal for $13,000 AU ($9,230 US). The Skoda is a mixture of VW & Audi with a unique Skoda body. Love your vids.
My VW Rabbit (Golf) in Europe is a 2008 Mk 5 with the 2.5L I-5 engine which I love! It only has 162K trouble-free miles on it. It's name is "Harvey" from the 1950 movie with James Stewart and the invisible 6' rabbit. A Beetle heart lives inside.
I would love to see the wizards reaction to the Beetle build by JP Performance here in Germany. Just imagining him getting to see that 'thing' in person (on his lift)!
That's a good looking Beetle, nicely setup, turbo with a manual
trans. Should be fun.
It looks cool, and the turbo is nice. I dont like beetles but this is a cool one , maybe get a carbon fiber hood
Wonder if the NACA air ducts under the car are meant to have brake cooling hoses attached to them?
Also the radiator intake could benefit from having a rock guard screen. Mack trucks have them.
I have a '15 CC with a Manual with the same engine and I'm guessing the same clutch setup too, because it is surprisingly light. It has only enough resistance for fine tuning, and that's exactly the way it should be. A CC is just a stretched Passat with a swoopy body and has no business being fun to drive, but thanks to the drivetrain and suspension it borrowed from the GTI, it kind of is.
Very nice looking. I grew up in the 60s,70s and 80s with the old Beetles.
Funny I was just thinking of you and that beetle that Tyler took on the rally stage and wondering what happened to it, as that was a pretty sweet car and they actually made an orange turbo S special edition in the early 2000's that I was seriously sweet on that I swear had all the same leather and interior Hoovie has on his Murcie, like if you ever find one of those it would be the perfect companion piece for hoovie, although I think the bug looks better lol
I have a Reef Blue 2012 Turbo 2.0 TSI, DSG Trans with the NAV/Sound/2 Tone Leather package also my advise look into doing a Preventive upgrade to your Timing Tensioner and check for a chain stretching and jumping these are known for destroying the engines when the chain snaps. I did mine the first month of owning it in 2020 with 81k and it was stretched and the lower timing gear was damaged and a few teeth broke off so mine was on the verge of destruction I replaced everything behind that timing cover including a new cover. Good Luck with it though.
