Maybe make shaft longer to give you more bolts lower past the prop with a " U " shape in shaft around the prop area. Seems like a lot of side torque on that lower bolt. It might be worth playing with turnbuckles to rake mast forward on the weather helm issue. I would bet your losing hull speed with that extra drag on the rudder. My father was a navel Architect and boat builder he could have figured it out, unfortunately he passed in 2000. We built a few nice cruisers together, one was a 38' double ender western red cedar strips and epoxy sandwich with biaxial cloth. Love your channel Cheers!

I've owned an Alberg 30 for many years. A traveler makes a big difference to reduce weather helm - most here in the Chesapeake have made that modification. Also, new sails make a huge difference. You can crank the outhaul and the vang all you want. If you sail is stretched out, it can't be flattened.

You either hit a container or clipped a sub sail/mast. Maybe you should pre-rig a side rudder set up for future emergencies. Store the thing in two pieces that screw together & slide into rings on the rear side like Viking long boats. :)

glad you made to Hawaii, good job and hats off!
For the rudder issue, of course having the tiller hard over to maintain a course doesn't kill the rudderblade mounted to the shaft straight away but doing that for hundreds and hundreds of miles is really not good practise and puts alot of additional stress to an old wooden/ bronce set up.
sails and weight distribution should be in a way that just a little bit of steering towards leeward is necessary to maintain course. ease mainsheet etc.
    thats just my humble opinion
I really like your channel and I think you are doing a very good job both sailing and video wise.
brave warrior you are, fair winds!!!

James you are ‘ the man’
I watch your channel, and have followed your journey for years.
I have an Alberg 35 , the hull and rudder shape are very similar to your Triteria.
Because of your rudder failure, I put similar straps on my own rudder.
It was hard work , and the boat was out of the water and the rudder was still in its original position.
Cudos to you for all you do , and can do!
Please be sure to document and show us your permanent rudder repair.

RE: weather helm, next time you are out.. a couple things to try..
    1) Prior to possibly adjust mast tuning, move the mast forward if there is any rear leaning/rake..
    2) depower the main a bit more clue outhaul, cunningham/boomvang (flatten take out belly) and or power up your headsail a bit more.
Many times weather helm is caused by sail/balance/trim...

I'm a little not real time, its probably already done, but I'm sharing this, and they had a rudder that has a split panel construction also. I haven't actually seen their recent video, I wanted to look at yours first and share to them and vice versa (yours is a temp repair). Theirs will be showing soon, its the bums on a boat channel.

    You will stand the platform
If you drop something; no problem if you need to set your piece down,; no problem.
When you torque something you might need the resistance

Wow I wouldn't have thought the water would be that nasty in Hawaii. Gee with stainless steel I would think it would be a permanent fix. Kinda looks like an orca picked its teeth with your rudder. Yep in your first video on the boat you said the rudder arrangement was very important in your choice of the boat. It's very true that salt water preserves wood. But you have to contend with toredos or ship worms that can honey comb a piece of wood. I was on a friend of mines 27 catalina when it ran aground on a solid bottom at full speed under power. Didn't seem to harm it and it was a very hard grounding.

James I have a similar boat. Mine was sailing very unbalanced to the point that my self steering gear was struggled to keep it on course (relative to the wind). I bought a new Genoa and tuned the rig and it made an amazing difference, the tiller is centered and barely moves over miles. I checked a track recently (actual course sailed) and I deviated from the rum line by only a few feet over 10 miles. You need to get your boat to sail without weather or lee helm, easier on you the equipment and self steering! Replace your beat up sails, tune your rig and enjoy the ride! Ben S/V DAWN

If you're really going to fabricate a new rudder, you might as well construct a Skeg and Rudder aft of the current position on the keel. (Skeg Hung Rudder)
You will eliminate the weather helm issue, "wrong angle of torque" on the rudder post, and the misdirected loads, while also reducing drag while sailing.
And the wind-vane will work better too, all in one modification.
Yes, my own boat has this mod; works fantastic.
Many people add a bow spirit to compensate for weather helm, but the anchoring chafing and extra LOA marina charges just isn't worth it to me

    • @SailorJames

I’m pretty sure your particular boat was designed to be balanced from the get go because a true blue water boat should never travel long distances with excess weather helm because nothing will hold up that long with those stresses no matter how old something is.
If you’re running a little heavy and have bad sails you will never balance that boat and will continue to have stress problems all over the place.

Loads sat in the harbors looking dirty bloody good boats to mate. If ye want I can look around for you and try find out who owns them for you mate. Good size boats to. @@Laters3 ha, thanks!! I live in Arizona. Good score on your purchase 👌. 30 years ago I traveled to Brighton often, should have picked one up then. My buddy has a Prout snowgoose in Tampa where I enjoy a few pints 🍺. Isle of Man looks ideal for sailing.

The USA looks amazing well parts north west or b/c Canada love them massive forest use have and also the vast land. Would love to travel by jumping train and sneaking on the coat or stone cargo trains. And hope I don’t get court doing it. But then if I get court I’ll have an experience in a us jail. Haha 😂. Look up Isle of Man TT racers on CZcams brother. If ye like bikes you love this mate

Yeah enjoy watching you build such a great vessel but sometimes you come across a little cocky like you know more than everybody else and make some people feel like they don't know what the hell they're talking about some people might just be suggesting something or might not know as much as you do so just try to keep that in mind carry on carrying on

@@SailorJames And would it be true to say 'you can't sail a boat backwards'? Perhaps only the one on your back 😆You strike me as being a contemporary version of a 'salt scurvy dog'! Your solo crossing vid was a YT random recommendation to me last night and possibly the most resonant post I've ever seen there. Just the core of the 'lost rudder' theme could not be more appropriate and compelling as a real-life metaphor for the state of the world right now...if only the nation's 'leaders' could handle themselves with such calm courage and 'grace under pressure' as you did, we'd all be on a very different path!
I have been hours on a hookah a meter below the waterline of my brothers 1940's 73' cross-planked Fairmile screwing on a 3mx40cm ply patch to repair a missing plank that we lost at sea in a storm, in the trawler dock full of Bull sharks on the Gold Coast...your rudder dive took me right back to one of my life's hairiest events!
When you told the back story to your departure, my heart skipped a few beats imagining how fkking tough that must have been, and then nursing your feelings solo across the ocean...well done brother, well done! Mucho respect! Never been married, but been betrayed by enough gals to know the score! 😜. I'm a surfer and waterman now in SW Western Australia and have just sold my house to go traveling...hence why I'm watching sail channels...I'm missing the sound of rattling anchor chains and wind in the rigging! Hope to catch up with you somewhere for a rum on the open seas...fair winds and happy sails good man!

Never a truer word said. I was given a quote on a starter motor 500 pound for my Volvo Penta 2020 MD engine when I only needed a 2 pound piece for the inside I went back to my boat had a good look at what I need to do solve the problem and I didn’t even have to spend a penny to fix it. And learned a lot from this experience. In the 7 years Iv had my yacht. Iv not spent much money on it all at. People say your boat is a never ending money pit yes it is if you want to keep wasting money on shit and stuff we don’t need my idea is to fix my boat with things that I can find for free or make for free. Yes money helps. But you don’t really need to spend on your boat to have all the technology on your boat keep everything plain and simple like we did in the old days and you both can go a long long long way respect you too brother mate
