This is a full song from the New York concert in June 2008. Shane MacGowan wrote this song for The Clancy Brothers, which they sadly never recorded. This is Liam's first recording of it, live at The Bitter End.

Shane is a living genius, a true wordsmith. Whatever that mystical talent is that Dylan, waits, Cohen and many more were born with Shane had it in abundance. Shane wrote this song for Liam and sent him a recording, gave the song to him. Liam couldn't understand the words so never sang it until years later they met in a bar in NYC and Shane scribbled the lyrics on a beer mat for Liam. As the story is told by Liams son.

There was whiskey on Sunday and tears on our cheeks
You sang me a song as pure as the breeze
Blowing up the road to Glenaveigh
I sat for a while at the cross at Finnoe
Where young lovers would meet when the flowers were in bloom
Heard the men coming home from the fair at Shinrone
Their hearts in Tipperary wherever they go
Take my hand, and dry your tears babe
Take my hand, forget your fears babe
There's no pain, there's no more sorrow

Found a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball

And a fiddle playing Sean Dun na nGall
And the next time I see you we'll be down at the Greeks

For it's stupid to laugh and it's useless to bawl

There'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on our cheeks
For it's stupid to laugh and it's useless to bawl
'Bout a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball.

Hard to credit that 18 months later he'd be gone. Irelands loss. We wont see his like again. Requiescat In Pace
