Remarkable Engines: ELS 600

  • There are numerous railroads that have their own treasures with rare pieces of rolling stock. One of these includes the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railway with its incredibly diverse roster including Baldwins, ex-Conrail GP38s, and an ex-Milwaukee Road FP7! [And yes, I am aware that they have the last two remaining Baldwin Sharknoses stored there before you write that in the comments] This F unit has been in service for 70 years for five different railroads on a variety of tasks.
After months of searching for a new video editor, I finally found DaVinci Resolve with MUCH more enhanced features than Windows Video Editor. Even though it did take some time to edit this long-awaited episode, I feel that it's the best episode I made in the series to date, and might as well go grand for the 20th episode of Remarkable Engines!
I would like to personally thank these two great CZcams channels who allowed me to use their rare footage of this locomotive, as their clips greatly enhanced the experience of this video and increased its overall quality.

I knew about ELS 600, but I didn't know that it is the _last_ F-unit in revenue service... or that it had such a varied career! Now, I know it has been used on long-distance passenger trains on the Milwaukee Road (in both its own livery and UP yellow), commuter trains in Chicago, freight trains near the city of Milwaukee, an FRA inspection train in 1978 (with Budd Silverliners and a Milwaukee Road observation car), as a mere backup generator, on tourist trains in Wisconsin _and_ Michigan, and now, on logging freight trains on the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railway!
    Thanks for the information!

Amazing video, although I believe on the Grafton and Upton railroad in Massachusetts, they have an F7A numbered 720A, that rarely, but still does pull revenue freight service. It is currently out of service for repairs but I'm pretty sure it will be put back in service later. Yes, G&U is a revenue freight railroad.

Closest thing I can find is G&U 1501, which was last seen running around 2019, but if it's restored for revenue freight service I'll be sure to cover it. I feel a bunch of news agencies might cover the story upon restoration, so that'll give it some good light.

Hi from Green Bay!! I researched the history of this FP7, and itrs 2 other sisters, 96-b is thr standard F7-b now at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, and the 2nd diesel FP7A is 96-C formerly used by the Indiana Railway Museum in Noblesville but evicted and actually forced by court odrer to move but by semi trucks, also with N.K.P. 587//2-8-2 Mikado now at Raveena, Ky, next to C&O 2716 2-8-4 Kanawha being rebuilt; but diesel 96c was formerly painted in MONON RR Gray and red and used on the FAIRTRAIN SHUTTLE, but after the Inrym eviction 96c was being stored by the Fort Wayne Rr Mus., that runs the NKP 765 2-8-4 Berkshire in excursions; thus it will be 100% Possible to get All 3 of the 96 A/B/C units together, and rebuild them to fully approved Amtrak standards, and repainted with "HIAWATHA" orange and maroon, for special excursions. Text me for further plans, ok!! All Aboard!! HIGHBALL !!-! SIGNED, Steven Solway. Green Bay, WI. Wed., August 24, 2022, A.D.
