  • Say hello to the new The Thirty Meter Telescope, it's the largest telescope in the world and is even bigger and sharper than the hubble space telescope and the James Webb telescope. What is the insane engineering behind the Thirty Meter Telescope and what makes the TMT mega project in Hawaii so special?

    What about the The Extremely Large Telescope, in Paranal, Chile, in the Atacama desert? For a moment I thought that one was the one you were referring to that is actually under construction in that country.

      The TMT will observe the Northern sky, whereas the European ELT in Chile will observe the Southern sky. The Northern sky actually has more galaxies observable, because the centre of our own Galaxy takes up a good chunk of the Southern sky. Furthermore, the Mauna Kea site probably has the best astronomical conditions in the world thanks to its altitude and location in the middle of the Pacific. Accessibility, clear weather and political stability (??) are also attributes.

    The Supreme Court never made any rulings regarding TMT. The Hawaii State Supreme Court did.

    WHY didn't the designers match or slightly creat a design larger than the European VLT - which is around 39.3 meters? With all of the partners this telescope has, why not make it 10 m larger?

    we were told the JWST was the all singing and dancing telescope, which provides the greatest views and sees further back in time than anything else. Yet here we are wasting umpteen billions of dollars while the world is falling apart !!!

    • @batbat224
      @batbat224 Před 9 měsíci +4

      JWST is no different than anything else you have ever bought in your life. I’m sure you were told your phone was the best phone ever when it came out. Things will only be the “best” until the next thing comes along. BTW JWST was designed in the late 90’s I believe and construction started 2004. So it’s already almost 20 years old.

    • @batbat224
      @batbat224 Před 9 měsíci +5

      A few other things. JWST had 344 single points of failure before it became fully operational, cost $10 billion dollars and not trillions and NASAs budget is 0.5% of the US economy and I’m sure the roughly 20,000 people it employed before launch didn’t consider it wasted.

    Video titled "Battle to Build TMT".
    Doesn't mention actual disagreement over construction until 8:27, and then only as a side note.
    "Construction was halted by some Hawaiian natives."
    Then you lied.
    "The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of TMT."
    The US Supreme Court has no rulings about TMT. Hawaiian courts have rulings about the telescopes on the mountain though, most of them not flattering for management.
    But viewers of this video wouldn't know any of that as this covers literally nothing of the content it purports to.

  • @A808K
    @A808K Před 4 měsíci

    Construction has long ceased and as a Hawai'i Islander, I can assure you that the 30 Meter will NEVER be built on Mauna Kea. Enough already.... the Keck, Gemini, Subaru and 10 others already exist with 4 of those now set for removal. They scar this site, sacred to the indigenous kanaka maoli. Put them in orbit or the Atacama.

    well spending more time in the present might be better for everyone. because tomorrow is a maybe, yesterday is gone and all we really have is today. spending like this would be nice if everyone had a place to sleep and food to eat, but they do not soooo this is a waste of time and money. wish in one hand and poop in the other and see switch one fills up first and we need to get the poop out of our hands

      @@petepop4319 Good, then we agree about the sports religion's waste of money, but it's rather misconceived, to wait to build bigger telescopes until all the world's problems have been solved. If people are generally more inspired to think about their place in cosmos, and understand our whole reality in a bigger picture, instead of being tempted to become a member of a Flat Earth society or the like, then the world's problems will also fade away time. The less we locking ourself insides a small cosmic home, and the more we expand our horizons, the more we advance as a cosmic race. I know this from experience, as I started astronomy as a hobby when I was 4 years old. I have long since understood that our little cosmic house we call Earth cannot help us with all our problems. The tragicomic thing in this context is that environmental activists call our planet "Mother Earth", but they expect this mother to breastfeed them forever. I've written a book about this, but I can't post the link to you, as youtube doesn't accept links in comments.
