    Hey Swimmers - I believe that EVERYONE can swim without fear and with 100% confidence. We just need to maintain our comfort levels and learn to eliminate fear. You see, it is our engrained psychology of fear that is preventing us from learning to swim / learning to tread water, it is not our inability physically or incorrect technique.

    I had no idea you could tread water like this. I just started public (beginner) swimming lessons, and in our 4th session we were brought to the dive tank with life jackets on and shown how to tread water for about 10-15 minutes. After that we were instructed to take our jackets off, jump into the deep water and try to tread for 30 seconds. I was NOT ready, but did it anyway and promptly started to sink after I resurfaced (trying the egg beater).
    After watching this video, I was able to do the chair pose on my second try. I'm now able to tread for about 15 seconds doing a flutterkick, but knowing that I can relax back into the chair position if I get too tired has made me relax more in the water. Thank you so much for posting this!

    Yes! This is exactly how I managed to stay afloat. Just last month I tried going to deep parts of pool and whenever I sink, I try to go back to floating. So it finally dawned on me that going almost floating (with slightly diagonal than completely vertical) when leaning back really does the trick, even without moving the arms.

    why did they teach us egg beater in swimming classes that were supposed to be like for water survival >_< this makes so much more sense.
    I guess that the surface area is probably helpful not for buoyancy directly, but for stability, which affects energy expenditure.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před rokem +3

      Hi JBCA - Thank you for watching and supporting the channel! Our entire learn to swim system is broken and filled with "swim instructors" who do not specialize in teaching swimming. Egg Beater is meant for water polo players to gain vertical advantage when playing, it was not designed for someone learning to swim to ensure your head stays above water to breathe. Also, learning to swim is learning how to survive - its crazy we try to isolate a single skill and call is survival. Anyway, thank you for creating the space for my rant :)

      Thank you for your comment - the truth is that we ALL have unique floating positions - they are not all "perfect" with our arms and legs on top of the water. When we look at relative density, muscle is more dense relative to water. Whereas adipose tissue is less dense relative to water. With that said, extremely muscular people can still float but we generally have to include much deeper breaths, relaxation, & sometimes movement.

      @@caribeswim I’m struggling with freestyle swimming hope you can have a simpler and better tips on how to do it without running out of breath. Breathing is one struggle for me too. Thank you very much and more power to your channel 👍🙏

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před rokem

      I totally hear you. The Foundation of swimming is relaxation and breath control. They ARE the deciding factors of how successful or less than successful we are with swimming any stroke, including Freestyle. This has to do with our ability to learn how to work WITH the water, instead of fighting against it. Relaxation & Breath control allows us to be more buoyant, relative to the water vs. if we: force movements, aren't relaxed, or do not have air in our lungs. The ladder makes us more dense.
      This is incredibly important as it changes how we approach swimming all together.
      Most programs want to push technique until they are blue in the face. The problem with this theory is that ALL THE TECHNIQUE in the world, cannot overcome lack of relaxation or no air in our lungs.
      ----
      I say all this to say, focus on implementing meditation or at least Box Breathing [4 second diaphragm breath expanding stomach inhale, 4 second pull breath up to chest and hold at top, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold at bottom] repeating 5-10 times BEFORE you swim.
      Once we can relax more, we are more buoyant and therefore can focus more on simple techniques that make large impact.
      If you film a 30 second segment of you swimming and send to Jeff@caribeswim.com I am happy to provide a free analysis as well.
      Hope this helps! Until then, Keep Swimming,

I can backfloat easily now but still can't tread water, especially in the deeper end, I get extremely anxious and short of breath in the deepwater but I can easily relax in shallow water which is why I tried this in shallow water only. Are there any other things I should consider? Any more exercises for relaxing better in the water?

    what if I have negative buoyancy, I immediately sink even if I am on my back like a star fish, my legs will sink.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Hi Julianblacksmith8539 - thank you for your comment and welcome to the channel! The truth is that most adults believe they are negative buoyant when in fact they are tense or their body position is incorrect in the water -or- they have not taken a deep enough breath.
      There are many myths about "sinkers" vs "floaters" but its simply not true.
      Do this:
      1. Take a diaphragmatic breath
      2. Ensure you are 100% relaxed, if you are not, go to shallow water, if you are still not, get our flotation belt
      3. Gain necessary exposure in this position - usually a minimum of 1-3 hours in shallow water before moving to deep water.
      ---
      NOW, with that said, some people are under 10% body fat and this does present a challenge but not impossible as I have taught professional athletes this and it still works!

    • @caribeswim

      Great question - your entire foundation of treading water and indeed learning to swim is built on relaxation. The more you can relax and work WITH the water, the better you will be. Think of it like this: When we use forceful movements, we create tension in our muscles. More tension in our muscles makes us more dense. The more we relax, the less dense we become.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you for your comment! You want to take a full inhale and exhale about 30 - 50%. The exhale should be quick as you will feel your bodies buoyancy reduce slightly when you do it. From there, get another big diaphragmatic inhale and repeat.

      Welcome to the channel and thank you for the comment! You want to do a 50/100 principle: 50% exhale [quick] and 100% inhale. The answer is yes, you will always reduce your buoyancy when exhaling BUT you need to exhale in order to properly inhale. Timing your exhale and making it quick with reduce the amount of time you are reducing your buoyancy before recovering with your inhale.
      Hope this helps!

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi Gaarax - learning how to tread water is not a single time experience! Everything you do takes time to learn. I LOVE that you tried the strategy but extreme effort is also NOT how we want to approach this. We ALWAYS want to start from a base of relaxation - my best advice is to keep trying because simply trying anything once, then saying "it doesn't work" I think will only have you falling short in life! Learning how to sing also is not something you are born able to do or not - its a constant practice to get great! Same with Treading Water!

      @@caribeswimNo because the person’s natural buoyancy is also a big factor. Some people are sinkers. It would take more than just sitting and sculling with your hands to stay afloat.

    • @caribeswim
      @caribeswim  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi Bigcatlove: Thank you for you comment. There are 4 factors that impact someones buoyancy and a persons fat/muscle ratio is only one of them and it is simply not true that people are "born" sinkers or floaters.
      1. Relaxation and the ability to release any fear or tension is by far #1
      2. Ability to take a deep diaphragmatic breath before starting the movement
      3. Technique being used
      4. Natural buoyancy or fat/muscle ratio.
      I have had professional athletes with under 7% body fat float and learn to tread water. Instructors use this term "Born sinker" as a scape goat for not truly understanding what promotes buoyancy or how to get their students to this place in their swimming journey.
      I hope this helps and as a community we do not simply define people as one thing or another :)
      Best,
