I loved when Kevin says everyone needs to work in retail (or the restaurant industry) to learn humility and how to be human. I have always said this. Working those kinds of jobs is hard work and gives you such an interesting perspective on life that you can't get anywhere else.

ETA: (lord help me I’m only 3 min in lol) I think I’ve been following TLL since they only had a few thousand subs and I remember being SO CONFUSED bc the content was so refreshing and educational, like why don’t they have a million?! Then I realized the channel was brand new at the time, and I think I commented something like “just sitting back waiting for y’all to blow up, cuz it’s gonna happen”…and here we are! 🤩
When you guys discussed the 'attempts at destroying femininity' my mind lit up like the sun. Talk about a paradigm shift! I'm going to be 54 years old this year and I'm finally just beginning to love myself and I'm just starting to put my needs first. Part of my love of makeup has always been about feeling prettier, putting on the mask that conceals the pain so the world out there has no clue about what's really going on, but I never thought about it beyond that. My makeup obsession is real and has been a big part of my life since my early teens, but I've never fully analyzed the why behind that obsession. This podcast has really opened my mind.

As a bisexual woman that's struggled my entire life with understanding my sexual and gender identities i can't even put into words how inspirational the lipstick lesbians are to me. I grew up very "tomboy" mostly because of weight struggles and not feeling like i was allowed be a girl because i didn't fit in with my feminine peers, and that continued through most of my college years. I didn't find a deep love for makeup artistry and beauty until my mid 20s during the pandemic, and it really was a pivotal shift in my life that gradually allowed me to embrace my femininity and experiment more with my gender presentation despite working in a fairly conservative industry that generally encourages uniformity in self expression (funnily enough I'm actually an accountant lol, I'd probably get along well with Johnny's sister). If i had role models like these two growing up i truly feel like adolescent me would have had more courage to experiment and learn more about myself, and i'm so glad people like them exist in this world and are able to be positive role models within the beauty industry and on social media.
This was such a wonderful episode, major kudos to johnny and kevin for being incredible hosts to these talented women and facilitating great conversations!

I'm 66 and I look forward to seeing the lipstick lesbians analysis of products and they don't just go for the young people. They also go for people with mature skin which I have, I appreciate their content. I appreciate their education. And I also appreciate the fact that they are educating me with what they know so I can make better choices for my age group and my makeup so I could care less what your preferences. You both are beautiful women and you have beautiful hearts and you have beautiful channels.
Honestly such an insightful episode. Johnny I wish you could see how we view you so here comes a long story...I'm a mum of 6 who during covid realized how much I'd lost myself....I feel hard into the beauty community on CZcams and loved the freedom and creativity makeup gave me...since finding you on CZcams cos I'm not a huge watcher on other platforms you have changed what I consume....iv noticed hard lately that even the girls vid iv followed for years have become sales based and it shows....and I hate it. I live in New Zealand makeup is expensive as all hell....your looking at 100$ for a trixie palette well over 100 for anything high-end no sephora in the south island were I live so most of my purchases are based on reviews I feel I can trust you and Kevin more than the rest now....not only that every you post is enjoyable and your both just amazing and captivating and kind and honest and I just adore you both....thank u from the bottom of my heart for sharing ur knowledge and back story and everything you do....ps we reached a point 6 months ago were id watch u eat toast and love it.....the knowledge and everything is great but honestly its you both that make this pod amazing its the passion behind whatever your talking about that makes you both magical to watch❤

Oh HELL YEAH! I've been manifesting this since both of y'all took over my feeds everywhere! Praise to the on high, Every time Alexis would pop up on my feed I kept thinking you would all love each other. The sheer product knowledge just sitting in that room, I'm in awe.
(Edit after finishing the episode). Not to get too deep, but I truly believe that you could be a form of our generation's Kevyn Aucoin with your depth of knowledge and understanding of the art-form. You have such a wealth of experience in all types of products and skin types and the painting of different faces and techniques, and such a deep understanding of the way it all works, with the bonus of being able to successfully educate and captivate audiences. You manage to hold attention so well and simultaneously entertain and educate, something that cannot be said for everyone. That sort of charisma can't be taught. It's something born out of who you are and the life you lead. Fire can burn down forests, but it also creates and allows space for new growth and life that belongs in that space. And it sucks to want to fit into an industry where the corporate overlords don't see the inherent value or benefit or just market expansion that adding you can bring. But that is not a you problem, it's a them problem, whether or not it is pride or bigotry or just the good old-fashioned sexism. Do you, who you are as you are, and do it so well that they never even get the option to ignore you or the safe space you create for people to find judgement free entertainment and education all rolled into one about something so traditionally looked down in modern western society. One day they are going to realize that consumers drive the market, not them. And we are, in this day and age, seeing more and more that consumers are gaining back the knowledge of the power of buying, the power we as consumers have over supply and demand and advertising/promotionals. One day we who have been here since the beginning are going to have the best time looking on at your success with our proud mama eyes reminiscing "Ah, I knew he was destined for greatness. Remember when it was just Sephora skits and red carpet critiques?" And speaking as a viewer, what a blessing it is to be able to bear witness to the beginning of something wonderful. To be a fly on the wall (Or a viewer from a screen ;) ) watching as you grow and progress with such gratitude for what you bring with you. I just know there are such great things coming for you and such a great future coming, and I can't wait to see it. Know that we watch on with such love and gratitude for everything you bring to the space, and that you willingly choose to give up and share with us such integral pieces of you. We love you and we are so proud of you.
The hardest part of building a legacy is that it's like planting a tree where we will never be able to see it bear the fruits of our labor, but we plant it anyway knowing that the people who come after will benefit from it being there so they have the space and time to add to it until there is a full orchard helping to keep our village alive. I know in my heart of hearts what you are both doing with this podcast and just your general internet presence is inspiring and healing for so many. Keep doing what you're doing, and know that your audience supports you. We believe in you, and we will follow you where you go.

hehehe and a minute and a half in: I'm happy to share that intellectual property is easy to protect if you have to, copyright is automatically applied to a creation the moment its made. because "the lipstick lesbians" is a channel name, it doesn't matter how long it takes to register the copyright, the date created is the minute it belongs to you! obviously its smart to have the copyright registered so that you don't have to wait for registration before the lawsuit can be in court but you already legally have the rights to the name you created and it applies from date of creation not date of registry

OMG I’ve worked in restaurants for 20 yrs, just went back to finish college for mental health counseling 🎉but I’ve said infinite times everyone should HAVE to work in a role like that for 6-12mos to learn how to act. Truly!!
I went to Cosmetology school once I turned 18 and got my esthetics license, having a dream of doing facials and waxing with makeup on the side. I interviewed at my dream salon at the time, but they rejected me purely because I had not learned Brazilians. I got really really discouraged, stopped doing makeup as much, and went into my other dream industry (cannabis). I’ve been in that industry for 5 years now, and haven’t done any makeup gigs since my first few.
It is thanks to these four wonderful content creators that I am re-obsessed with makeup & skincare, and considering doing makeup on the side again.

I agree that these brands don’t realize how more open the customer is. I worked in stores for many many years and I have heard closed minded guests speak as being upset on a male in a cosmetic add but it’s not a lot. And it was 10 fold I heard positive. Of course the negative speaks and cries the loudest but your representation in the community as a whole holds so much more value than someone’s nasty words.
This is a must watch ❤ Between Kevin’s first meeting with Johnny to the LL and how they met. I’ve said this before, but as a 59 yr old woman who lives in La, you guys teach me so much. Johnny, you are so brilliant and kind that you really deserve the industry to hold your talent at a high level. We all do and this will your year to shine. Y’all are laying things out in a way that has never occurred to me- yet was in front of me all along- but you’re making the pieces fit together just a bit better. I love this. I think I said this on another Beautiful and Bothered comment section- but this is so much more than makeup. It’s self love. Its community. It’s connection. And it IS makeup- which is fun as hell, especially when we’re doing it for ourselves and for positive reasons.

It blows my mind that the beauty brands got a jump scare from the backlash that Budweiser got; as if they have the EXACT same audience. Like, I get there is definitely some overlap, but I can’t help feeling like they only see “customers” as a monolith, not discrete people who have different interests and different values

Beauty consumers are definitely more progressive than the beauty industry thinks they are, Johnny. I absolutely agree with you! I can't tell you how many beauty channels I have unsubscribed from over the last year because I am sick of being pressured to buy, buy, buy, and by how disingenuous everyone has become. ❤
