    As a pool owner, I use powdered ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to get rid of my pool iron stains. By extension, I have taken to using 3-4 large chewable plain colored Vit C tablets in my toilet tank. They work! And are a bit less toxic.

    • @dprsh
      @dprsh Před 7 lety

      Cary Branthwaite Do you crush the tablets up into a powder or just drop them in the tank?

      Just drop them in. They dissolve pretty quickly.

    I just tried this today. We waited longer than we should have and had quite a bit of iron build up. It worked really well. There was a little that did not come out but I made a kind of tooth paste and a heavy duty scrubby and with some elbow grease it finally came out. The iron inside the tank completely came out as far as the water level form the water I added to it. So yes, it works really well.

    Great video, but one important point to note - when re-opening the supply valve, use a crescent wrench to hold the valve's packing nut behind the valve handle while turing the valve counterclockwise to open it, to ensure that the nut doesn't turn with the valve stem. It's not uncommon for older standard gate-type valves to have calcium deposits formed between the valve stem and nut. thus binding them together, and when the handle is turned counterclockwise to open the valve, the nut can turn with it, thus loosening and disassembling the valve, and the water pressure can and will definitely blow the valve assembly out of its body and you'll have a flood in your bathroom within seconds, made worse if you don't know where the house's main water shut-off valve is located and is readily accessible to be turned off immediately. (Imagine a garden hose opened and turned on full in your bathroom.) Make it a standard practice to always know where a house's main shut-off valve is located _before_ attempting any interior plumbing supply repair or touching any supply valve.

    Fantastic!!!! Worked like a charm, thanks for the video. For anyone with stains very low, I used a toilet brush with an angled handled and good bristles to work the Iron Out around in the very bottom to get what wasn't cleared out the first time. I also used sandpaper as I've seen suggested on the remaining top ring and that worked great as well. The inside of the toilet is now gleaming white.

    I just tried this, but had to modify the instructions a little. I couldn't plunge all of the water out of the bowl after I flushed and turned the water off, so I just put the drain plug over the hole -- no rag. Then I filled the bowl with hot water from the tap, along with the tank. Put in the Wink Iron Out. Waited for 10 minutes. Looked great! Then I tackled the black marks left by the rubber plunger with a Mister Clean Magic Eraser. The toilet looks new! 11/23/2017 Note: After I turned the water on, the water had a brown tint, but this went away with several flushes. I think cleaning the tank stirred up stuff that discolored the water. The water turned clear with a few flushes. I'm quite satisfied! Thanks for this video!

    I need to give credit where credit is due. I saw this video, and did the exact same thing and it did not work or so I thought. It dawned on me after I commented that there are really are two parts to cleaning a toilet for some people not all. Your instructions worked great and removed the rust. Two thumbs up! What was left looked like rust but it really was not. I used a pumice stick on the remainder and now I have two brand new toilets. Keep up the good work and Thank you for the great help!

    Glennspeeds, you use it just like you would comet or any other powdered cleaner. Sprinkle a generous amount in the toilet bowl and scrub with a toilet brush. My experience with it is that you don't have to scrub too much to get the rust or other stains out. It's also amazing at getting hard water stains off items, shower doors, anything made of glass, I had hard water stains on my granite and it took it off easily.

    Iron out works really well. I use that or Whink rust stain remover. Those are the two products I have tried that gave me any good results. The thing about Iron out is that it s safer. The Whink stuff is faster but not as safe. Read and follow the safety instructions on the label and even the worst chemicals can be harmless.

    For anyone curious if this really works..yes it does! I had tried most common toilet bowl cleaners, bleach and CLR, all without making the slightest difference in removing the stains.I didn't find it necessary to shove a rag in the drain and just used the flat stopper. After letting it sit for 15 minutes some REALLY dark rust stains in the tank and bowl were absolutely gone! No scrubbing at all. I found the 72oz bottle at a local Home Depot.

    This was great to remove the iron stains... but I had lots of problems. i ordered the drain stopper that Amazon recommended along with the Iron Out. After removing the water from the bowl and putting a rag in, the drain stopper did not seal, and when I put water in the bowl, the stopper just floated up. I had to put a bowl over it, which delayed the leakage, and kept adding more Iron Out. It's MUCH better, but I ended up using 1/2 of a container of the Iron Out due to the leakage. I have to find a better stopper at the hardware store!! Thanks for this video! I've been scrubbing these stains for months with no improvement! It looks like new!!

      +Peggy Sexton The Rag you use is to support the drain stopper. It needs to fit tight and hold the drain stopper so it can seal with the water pressure on top of it. You might want to try a different size rag and make it wet first. Glad it worked for you any way.

    Where can I get that big drain stopper, and what's the diameter of it?
    BTW, totally awesome video, just waiting to get the drain stopper to give it a try myself.
    Thank you for sharing!!!
