Augustin Grieninger was born in 1638 in Margreid in the South Tyrolean lowlands. Already in his youth, he was forced to travel far away from his homeland due to hard fate. According to his own statement, he studied at the university in the Moravian city of Olomouc, where he received a theological and probably also musical and compositional education and was trained in playing the violin. In 1663 he entered the Augustinian Monastery of Rottenbuch near Schongau in Pfaffenwinkel, Upper Bavaria, where he was ordained a priest in 1665 and from where he worked for decades as a pastor in Oberammergau, Oberigling and Steindorf; as a preacher he enjoyed a high reputation. It was only late, when he was already advanced in age, that he turned to poetry and writing in the 1680s. Augustin Grieninger is also one of the most important, interesting and original monastic composers of the High Baroque in the southern German-Austrian region. His work “musicalischen Kirchensachen”, which he only mentioned in passing in the preface to one of his literary works, were long thought to be lost, but were only recently rediscovered thanks to new finds in the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow and testify to impressive melodic inventiveness and a thorough knowledge of the most current stylistic developments in Italy.
