    Thanks Erica for coming out with this very helpful video. I was just thinking why I can’t seem to smell the hot throw on my candles and it is probably because I did add the FO too low of a temperature so the wax and FO didn’t bind. I will re-test. I just got re started making candles again and have been watching your informative videos.

  • @RoseKindred
    @RoseKindred Před rokem +5

    I find a lot of confusion comes from forums and a bad game of telephone. There are a few companies that posted on their sites to do everything at low temps. For example, 1 said to heat to 115f-125f, 5 degrees above the melting point, and then add the FO, pour at 105. Maybe it works for their waxes, but the info just keeps getting passed around as if it was THE WAY to make candles. Almost as bad as telling people to use half a crayon to color a jar.

    Hi Erica! What a helpful video. I’m just starting out and I’m really struggling with this issue. I have been using 464 and, although I have tried different variables, I’m still having a really weak hot throw.

    • @MemoryBoxCandleCo
      @MemoryBoxCandleCo  Před rokem +3

      Have you tried switching to a vessel that would allow for two or more wicks? If you choose a vessel with a larger diameter it naturally allows for a greater HT because the larger the diameter the better the HT can be. Of course there are many single wick candles that perform wonderfully, but it's just an alternative idea :)

      I’m not too sure I’ve actually never worked with that before! I believe I have heard that it helps with the hardness of the wax, but I’m not sure. So that would just be another variable you would have to test with and do the same process of only changing one thing at a time :)

    • @MemoryBoxCandleCo
      @MemoryBoxCandleCo  Před rokem

      In most cases you can add the FO in at 185 regardless of the wax, however I know coconut wax requires hotter temps, and I think gel wax is also different. But you’re right in general it’s best to follow what the guides are for your specific wax! I’ve always added in FO around 185 for all the waxes I’ve worked with (even some coconut waxes when I could only get it up to 192 ish degrees) and it’s always come out well!
      Ps, what is M12? I’ve never heard of that!

    Does anyone here work with Makesy’s Virgin Coconut wax? I use CS FO’s and Makesy’s wooden wicks and I just cannot seem to find the perfect formula! I’ve tried 10 %+ 11%. Barely any cold throw. I melt as suggested by Makesy (180-185) and pour at 160-165. I let the candles cure for 1-2 weeks. I can barely smell anything. W soy wax, the CT was great but the HT was terrible. After 50lbs of soy, I purchased 2-11lbs of Virgin Coconut Wax.

    • @Virgophrenia
      @Virgophrenia Před rokem +1

      You try lowering the percentage? Just because you put a lot in doesnt mean it will have a good HT? Or have you tried diff wicks? I use pure coconut wax as well. Are you mixing it with another wax? Im testing my candles/wicks currently. I have a good HT. But im playing around with the different pour temps. I cant really find any info on using coconut wax not pre blended. I had success mixing oil in at about 160° mixing continuously until about 145-50° and pouring. But I have just tried mixing at a lower temp like 130 and pouring at about 125ish when you can see it coating the pitcher a little. I put it in the boiler for like less than a min to melt that quickly and then pour. But I have a couple of days left before I can test. Definitely can get a little costly. Ive tried soy before when I first tried candle making. I didnt really care for. But may revisit in the future since I know more.

    • @mxj28
      @mxj28 Před rokem +1

      @@Virgophrenia Hey thanks for responding! I have been wick testing for awhile now and can’t seem to find the perfect wick. I’ve tried all of their wooden wicks so far. It’s almost perfect but not quite. The .03 crackling booster .625” but the flame gets a little high. I’m thinking of mixing it w something that’ll harden the wax a bit. Maybe that’ll help. I’ve been doing 10-12% FO - I haven’t tried using anything less. Would adding less actually have a stronger HT??

    • @mxj28
      @mxj28 Před rokem

      @@Virgophrenia Also, I believe Makesy’s Virgin Coconut wax has soy in it. It’s predominantly coconut however.

    • @Virgophrenia
      @Virgophrenia Před rokem

      @@mxj28 I dont use Makesy. I use an 100%coconut wax and blend some beeswax with to help harden it and give a longer burn. But definitely try a lower amount of oil. That could be causing your flame to burn like that. Try maybe using 8%. Too much oil can clog your wick. And you may be doing already, but make sure you are trimming your wick. The wicks I have are from lone star. I cut those closer to 1/4 in. But make sure to trim before each burn. But my first step would probably to reduce the FO.

    • @mxj28
      @mxj28 Před rokem +1

      @@Virgophrenia Yes I’ve played with the wick lengths. I’ve trimmed some 1/4 and some 1/8 to see the comparisons but no help. I’ll definitely try reducing the FO tomorrow. I usually do 3 candles with same FO% but different wicks. Then I try 3 more with the different mix and pour temps. So I do it to eliminate each portion. If the wicks are clearly a fail, I pull them out while the wax is liquified then insert new wicks so it can absorb the FO, I let it solidify for a day then go over it w a heat gun, trim and burn again. I’ll definitely try the next batch with 8% and 9% using the same wick and see how that turns out. Thanks so much for your help, love ya!!! I hope your business thrives! Praying over your success! :)
