Lived here for over 30 years and only reason I wouldnât recommend it is how the city lets the homeless live anywhere they please. It became seriously bad after 2020 .
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on the city. What do you think is the biggest benefit to living in Salem, OR?
We moved from California to Salem and I love it here. I agree it depends on where you move from and what you like. Where we lived it was way more expensive with summers that were 6 months long over 100 almost every day. Drought. Too many people, way more crime, lived in an area with a population of 500,000. We live in west salem which is way nicer than salem proper. So many pine trees and green. I hate the sun, love the overcast rainy days. If I never see another palm tree I'll be happy. I don't have allergies, love gardening and the green forests that are right down the street from my house. The hiking is outstanding, there are waterfalls 30 minutes away, and the beach is only an hour away. Earthquakes are no big deal to me, remember I'm from California. Salem is not for everyone but it definitely is for me. â€
Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm glad to hear you like West Salem. Its definitely a polarizing side of the city but happy to hear you enjoy its benefits.
Did you know much about West Salem before buying a house there or was it a totally new area for you?
Moving to Salem in Aug to work at Salem health can't wait â€â€ I don't care what people say in the comments I can't wait to start working as a RNđđđ
Congrats! Thats super exciting. Did you get assigned to work in Salem or did you pick it out?
Being a nurse is great. That's a horrible place to work though. Good luck.
Tell us more! What made it a horrible place for you? I know others who are thinking about relocating here would appreciate your perspective.
This is a wonderful video! You tell it like it is. Thank you for your honesty.
Thanks for watching!
I lived in the Felony Flats area of Salem for 4 years. My experiences... Train horns waking you up at 3 AM that echoes throughout the entire city. Homeless mental patients released from the State Mental Hospital terrorizing the streets at all hours of the day, There are more dispensaries then food stores, lousy food, lousy traffic, mold, mold and more mold due to the weather. It was the most depressing city that I have ever lived in, and I have lived all over the world, too. I wised up and moved to Central Oregon.
Thanks for sharing your perspective. What neighborhood do you think would have been a better fit for you?
Thank you I was about to buy a house there
Isn't CZcams great! Now you're more educated than before...all thanks to CZcams University âĄÌ
Yeah, and calling for help is like talking to the wall. The city would rather help the criminals than the taxpayers.

Iâm from Salem. Definitely wouldnât move there. đ€·đŒââïž Left 20 years ago.
Where did you relocate to and what prompted you to move away from Salem?
Hi! Clarification, sorry, the big earthquake we are overdue for. They have stated anything west of I5 is going to be generally unsurvable. Due to the massive tsunami and how devastating the " big one" will be. Yikes.
You touched on allergies, but you did not mention the GRASS allergies here. We have the worlds highest grass pollen counts here every spring from about late march thru to early july. If you suffer from grass, be aware. Last year we had a world record of over 1300. Anything over 200 is considered " very high". Its debilitating.
Yes! The pollen here is pretty bad and you're right about the grass. What is your go to remedy for allergies?
@SalemOR I have done immunotherapy injections, I stopped after like 2 or so years. It's supposed to do 5 years. Did oral immunotherapy. Drops under the tongue from a ENT/ allergist. That helped a bit. But not with grass. I use Claritin, nose spray, eye drops, and corticosteroids inhaled for allergy induced asthma. And I still am miserable for about 3 months a year. Ugh.
Allergies are rough here. Sorry yourâs are so bad for a good chunk of the year.
Reasons: crime is really bad, human trafficking is a major issue that they donât even stop, the weather is a nightmare, traffic and driving is basically risking your life. The I5 is a drug corridor that is ran by cartels based in Salem. I did my research and turned down the job! Donât move to Salem, especially if you have kids!
Thanks for sharing your perspective. Where did you end up relocating to?
âSalemâ means âpeace.â But you have to give up any bougie pretensions to find that peace here. Most canât do it and leave. The ones who remain usually arenât familiar with the term âbougie.â
This is a sentiment that makes sense to me. Salem is a town and definitely not a large city with too much bougie. Thatâs not the right fit for everyone.
What brought you to Salem?
@@SalemOR I had to get my son away from his malfunctioning mother. I was seeking peace. Kinda found it. Thereâs nothing to prove to anyone in Salem. If youâre not incarcerated or recently released or in treatment, and you have paying work and a home, youâre doing better than most.
Salem has made me want to die. Salem has damn near killed me. I moved away several times with different boyfriends but when the relationships came to an end and I couldn't afford to live alone I wound up living with family in Salem again and here I am stuck. Currently in a long distance relationship and he and I are hoping to move to Washington or Colorado or something.
Thank you for sharing your story. Iâm really sorry to hear about the struggles you've faced in Salem. It sounds like youâve been through a lot, and I can understand why youâd want a change.
I hope your plans to move to Washington or Colorado with your partner work out well. It sounds like youâre looking for a fresh start, and I wish you all the best in finding a place that brings you happiness and peace.
Salem is so lame. There, I saved you 40 minutes. You're welcome.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on Salem. I know others would love to hear from multiple people who live in Salem and have a different experience than I do.
What do you feel is the biggest con about living in Salem?
@@SalemORThe fact that when you want to go enjoy the cold and windy coast where everything closes at 8:00pm, highway 22 merges with highway 18 and you end up sharing the coast with a bunch of jerks from Portland. Or worse, weirdo's from Lafayette.
Thanks for sharing your perspective. It sounds like Salem is not the right place for you.
What keeps ya in Salem?
Good video.. not for me though. I'm a MA resident living in an extremely walkable/bikeable area, out of sheer necessity. Traffic is stopped dead most days, and public transportation sucks and is outdated. I see in this video there aren't many bike lanes or infrastructure to get around by bike. That's too bad.
It is too bad, I hope that the city of Salem makes more walkable infrastructure and the ability to live car free. They are making more bike lanes, but honestly I wouldn't bike in this city in 10000 years.
Would you ever live in the PNW?
@@SalemOR Most likely no. I hear nightmarish stories from places like Portland and Seattle about cities drowning in homeless and drugs. We have enough of those issues here, but the public would not tolerate that level of social decay.
I totally understand where you're coming from. Salem isn't the right place for everyone. Heck, Oregon isn't the right place for everyone. Hopefully those who watch my videos will have ample information to decide if Salem is (or is not) the right place for them.
I'm glad you're sharing your two cents on this channel. It really does help others make a well informed decision when there are multiple perspectives.
Single male with a catđ looking into relocating from Chicago for work. Can you speak on public transit? I take the train and bus here.
One of my personal gripes is that we are severely lacking in public transportation. However, Salem is MUCH smaller than Chicago so expect a 20 minute car drive to get about anywhere.
We do have a bus system, but I donât think itâs that robust.
Definitely be prepared to have a car in this city.
Canât wait to help ya move here and help your kitty cat find a nice PNW home âĄÌ
We all know the pets are the real priority here. Whatâs kind of kitty do you have?
At least, you should avoid West Salem.. Very few buses (and no train) and crossing a bridge to Central Salem is a nightmare at rush hours.
Tell us more about your perspective. If not West Salem, where would you recommend people look if they are wanting to move to Salem?
This isnât a transit city. Your best bet if you need to live here without a car is to prepare to spend a lot on Uber and DoorDash.
Complete opposite side of the spectrum from Chi

i have lived in salem Oregon my entire life i don't think that Salem is entirely bad yeah the homeless and druggies are a larger issue but there are good things here too also 1. don't act like doesn't Portland suck too 2. screw central air buy a window air conditioner or a fan not all everyone can afford a house with built in AC I swear if rich people don't stop ruining vintage houses with new boring colorless crap like how is boring brown and whites even a thing old houses have charm, character and history if your life isn't at risk leave it as it is.
You have some valid points. What do you think someone should know about living in Salem that hasn't yet been mentioned?
hmm
Tell us your thoughts as a local Salemander. What do you think about the topic?
You didn't mention the property taxes!
Property taxes in Salem are 1% of the homes value. This will vary based on the specific home but that this is a good rule of thumb if you're needing rough numbers.
If your house is worth $500,000, expect to pay ~$5,000 in property taxes.
@@SalemOR thank you!
And they're not as high as they should be. Just wait!
Thanks for asking! âĄÌ
It's not true that we dont get any tornados. We get a very small one or two every two to four years in the upper nw of oregon/sw wash. They usualy do almost no damage, but it happens
Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize we had tornados but ya learn something new everyday!
I see lil mini tornadoes all the time..when I drive from Salem to coos Bay.
They donât salt the roads or plow the roads.
You only need to plow when thereâs snow, and there is usually no snow. Saltâs great if you love buying new cars every 3 years.
Nothing good ever comes from complaining.
But here you are complaining about people complaining
