    People don't ever use flash but I always consider it an option that might make a photo when you just NEED the photo to work.
    The Pixel flash is under the lenses when holding the phone in landscape mode. That puts the shadow ABOVE the subject. Turn a Pixel upside down to get the shadow right.
    The Oneplus, on the other hand, has thought that through. The main sensor is closest to the flash, making shadows less pronounced and correctly placed in both landscape and portrait orientation (shadows under subject in portrait, and in landscape lower and slightly to the right)
    The tele lens is further from the flash making the shadow more pronounced but it is properly BENEATH the subject in portrait and clearly to the side in landscape.
    I always wondered why they didn't put the main sensor in the bottom right camera hole (the one they put light sensors in instead) and one reason I see is that the flash would make more pronounced shadows if they used that hole cuz it is much further from the flash.
    Now putting the sensor so close to the edge of the phone has made me look like an amateur GETTING MY FINGERS IN SOME PHOTOS- DOH! and a more centered sensor would have saved me from that mistake. So I "just" have to practice holding the phone better to hide my fingers from the frame. Old dog, new tricks.
    To notice these shadows without needing to take a bunch of photos, use the always on mode for the flash.
    My Pixel 7 doesn't have the flash always on mode like the OnePlus. (I just checked again) AND the flash is very far from the lens so it exaggerates the shadows so much that it makes the pictures look slightly evil with shadows towering above the subject.
    I would venture to say that Oneplus used MORE thought than we realize on making flash useable.
    Pixel, also uses nice thoughtful exposure and color decisions for flash but the upside down flash placement almost negates, for most people, those advantages.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  Před měsícem +3

      Great write up! I'm such a natural light snob I never think to really test the flash anymore. I hope we see more ring flash options.

    • @gmosc
      @gmosc Před měsícem +1

      @@SomeGadgetGuythanks. It's nice to remember to always also take a flash picture as a habit. Slow shutter speeds can mess up most of the people photos in low light. Pixel does a better job with getting the faces right in low light and I might keep it as a second phone for its advantages like that. I just gotta keep it charged and maybe turned off until needed.

  • @majtechtings

    I figured this would be the end result. My one plus open leans the closest to pixel out of any phone I've seen put out...I've even compared the pixel fold to the one plus open and 7 times out of ten? I preferred the open's photos. I actually like the over sharpening (I get it ..I'm in a small club regarding that lol) and how it doesn't blow out highlights nearly as much as I've seen a pixel tend to do. Plus x-pan mode and the 4k portrait video on one plus phones is SUPERB.

    the main thing that I dislike about Oneplus's camera is that at night, they create a "halo" effect around subjects. Other than that Oppo and Oneplus's processing is lovely!! Idk if they fixed it or not I mostly saw it discussed by Indian youtubers/ people with darker skin so maybe the algorithm isn't optimized for that so it's a bit of a bummer.

    First off, I am located in Canada in case that makes a difference in apps or operating system.
    Also, my previous phone was a Samsung S20 FE. Good phone, but the batty would not even last a day anymore.
    After watching a few of these reviews on the OnePlus 12 and hearing the only 2 complaints were about the lack of water protection and cameras were just so-so I decided that for the price I could live with that. I just bought the OnePlus 12 along with the Pad and Buds 3. I have a couple of complaints that no one pointed out. There was no dedicated music player. I typically don’t stream as I have my own collection of mp3 files so that bothered me that I had to download a player from the Play Store. Next is the fact that there are only 3 fonts to choose from and apparently you cannot install any new fonts without rooting the phone. Really irritating as being able to customize Android is one of the reasons I use it. I love that it has an IR blaster as I usually have my phone with me while watching TV or a movie. No more looking for the remote!
    The pad when connected to the phone to answer calls and messages, stutters and freezes a lot. Not impressed with that. Might have to wait for a fix in future upgrade.
    The bud 3 earbuds are impressive. No complains so far. Connected seamlessly to both the phone and the pad. All in all, I like the build quality and over all feel of the OS, I figure I will need some time to adjust to it coming from Samsun One UI, which has some really good features.

    Coming from a pixel 7, I would vouch for a op12 over a pixel 7-8pro. Pixels have great point and shoot front and back cameras but op12 does great picture and video (something lacking for pixels).
    Appreciate giving the callout on the camera op12 vs op open. However, I will say op12 front selfie camera does a pretty bad job.
    Curious to know if this is the same case for the op open? For an average user who would just be adjusting white balance, is the front op open front selfie better at reducing light?
    I saw videos saying you can use the back camera so do those shots do better at taking selfies?
    Also, I made the switch from the pixel 7 to op12 because the pixel 7 become unreliable as a phone.

Vivo dont even specify what screen or back protector they used, low sound quality on the mic or speakers,lower display and dpi,heating and battery draining issues which kinda put me off for using the phone for 3-4 years. It's always been the OP mission, and this year I think they nailed the price to performance. It kind of embarrasses the S24+.

    OP11 can shoot 4k120fps with 3rd party.

    I have been so heartbroken with my brother who finally broke his OnePlus 8, refused my advice to buy the OP12 and went with an iPhone 12 that his girlfriend's parents had lying around... I think he would have liked it and I would have liked to play with it before I relinquished it to him once I got it set up and cased+screen protectored.

      And the iPhone 12 was like the worst way to jump into iOS+5G.

    I return my Pixel 8 for a oneplus 12 and I'm glad I did. Pixel 8 camera is overrated to me.

      I REALLY like the Pixel vibe, and I think there are some important differences on a Pixel that help it keep this "point and shoot" reputation, but OnePlus is doing something special here, and I wish more techies would really pay attention to camera tech beyond "can I take boring instagram snapshots".

      It's okay to justify your purchase without trashing the Pixel 8 in the process 😊 😊 Personally, there's no better point and shoot experience camera phone at this point than a Pixel and the Pixel phone experience with everything that comes with it.

    yeah but OnePlus Doesn't make me feel smart and special for buying them anymore. I'm not like other brand fans juan, I need my phone to be overpriced and have glyphs on the back...

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I have no contempt for nothing phones, they appear to be great and fun enthusiast fashion and style phones with great marketing. But they're not everything... they're nothing....

    I know you're no longer an apple fan but you should review some iPhones at least to see how the latest iPhones camera tech stacks up. I recently got a free iPhone 14 pro and am impressed with the camera, but have always owned androids, like lg v40 and v60.

      I still test drive them off camera. I just choose not to support them with ANY traffic if I can help it.
      They're "fine". I haven't seen anything from Apple that points to any area where they truly excel. They're often given a run for their money by significantly less expensive devices, and they can still struggle with accurate skin tone on PoC. Especially when we get to play internationally with cameras using significantly more advanced optics, Apple is just sorta "fine". I think you can spend less to get "fine".

      I've been pretty lucky with OP's. My 8, 9, 10, 11, and now open/12 have all been pristine. I've had two samsung review units in that time that had green lines and weird low brightness artifacting.

    The only thing i hate about 'all' chinese phones is this, they tend to overexpose skin colors for us Blacks. Sad thing

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  Před měsícem +2

      Yeah no way around that. Even Apple struggles with good skin color accuracy. For that, I'd lean more towards a Pixel.
