    I have a 2004 Rx8 with 77000 miles/123000km on it and she runs perfect everyday. I use it to get me to work and on the weekends I have fun on country roads or the track. All I do is use premium petrol and top up the oil every 1000 miles/1600km. Let her warm up properly every morning and rev the engine slightly before shutting down. A rotary engine can be easy to look after if done properly and the Rx8 is one of the best cars I've ever driven.

      +Detc0re Im thinking about making an RX-8 my next vehicle purchase. I am very much looking for a "drivers car", would you make the assumption that for this price point i couldn't do any better? I am not worried about the prolonged time i must spend with my vehicle, seeing as i prefer being behind the wheel than anywhere else.

    • @ferengoid
      @ferengoid Před 8 lety

      +RyMann88 Right on! I had mine out autocrossing a couple of weeks ago, it's such a precise vehicle and very stylish too - I hope the next generation of enthusiasts will pick up the torch and keep this car on the road for years to come.
      It may be that the RX8 is the last rotary car we have, and it would mean that eventually they will be collectible. I'm starting to think that might happen, since Mazda is backing off plans for a successor. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's my take on it!
      Good luck!

    • @ferengoid
      @ferengoid Před 8 lety

      +Detc0re ps you guys, don't forget to get a proper compression test before you buy one. If it's low (lower than 6.9) it will need a rebuild or replacement soon. A Renesis should produce around 8psi if it's healthy.
      I'm not saying you shouldn't buy a car with a tired engine, but factor that into your offer.
      Happy Hunting!

    it forgot to say that temperature gauge is useless. if it move to the right your engine is done for. It wont move until 235F and the engine is in the danger zone for overheating at 220F. So the needle could be in the middle and you could have a really hot engine.

    People moan and groan about the Renesis engine, but really, at the pricepoint of a used RX8 (they're stupid cheap) you can afford to spend some $$.
    Think of it another way - if you bought a typical BMW or something you're going to lose more money in depreciation every year than you'll spend on your RX8.
    Not to mention that if you get a higher-end used car the repairs are astronomically expensive. The new Porsche GT3 RS has a titanium exhaust, imagine how much that's going to cost when it goes! Probably as much as a new Renesis...

    I always wanted an RX-8, but I try to find the 2nd gen models (2009-2012) because it seems like they have less problems than the 1st gen models. Every forum, video, or info you find about the RX-8, it always talks about its problems and those issues always ties to the 1st generation cars. Maybe the 2nd generation cars don't have as much issues as the older ones, there's rarely any videos or info on the 2nd gen's problems. If there isn't any problems, the 2nd gen RX-8s would be better than the older RX-8s since Mazda made changes to the Renesis and the car after 2008

    RX8 OWNERS PRODUCT UPDATE
    Continued problems with premature engine failure and defective engines and or componets replaced under the NHTSA manditory recall program and Mazda's extended warranty program.
    Paschal v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc., case number 8:14-cv-00594, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
    approx 50,000 of the 69,000 RX8s recalled for premature engine failures and failures to start when hot (flooding) their owners may be eligible to compensation under this action even if your engine was replaced or is now out of the extended warranty period... the case is based on the issues with the replacement engines failing and costs related to the failures and defects.

    • @hontoniarigato7956
      @hontoniarigato7956 Před 9 lety +1

      This mainly applies to the original owner that bought the car. If you take your car to Mazda they're not going to do anything for free. You have to provide physical proof; all receipts and paperwork for every possible oil change, maintenance, everything from the day the car left the dealership. If there is an oil change paperwork missing for 1 month they will not help you. Also all the paper has to reflect the correct method of maintenance if just 1 shows otherwise then they won't help you. Any type of performance modification or aftermarket parts is automatic NO. I know I've had this conversation at 2 different Mazda dealership, no offense but Mazda of USA is scum. They don't know jack shit about the RX8 and they're just there to jack you out of your money. If anyone wants a Class B Sports car you need to be serious no more ricer days.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer Před 9 lety

      Hontoni Arigato It applies to anyone who continued to have or still has problems related to defective engines despite having their original defective engine replaced or repaired under the engine recall and owners who's cars are no longer covered by the extended recall warranty. If the the court decides that Mazda was negligent in its efforts to solve the defects owners will still be eligible for compensation even if the maintenance records are incomplete... if Mazda sold defective parts they have to make good regardless how the product was handled after it was sold.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer Před 9 lety

      Hontoni Arigato The RX8 ended in 2011 model year and Mazda ceased all production of Wankel engines back in June of 2012... Mazda would really like to forget about all of the problems and move on with its new line of Skyactiv powered cars and its all new MX5 sportscar.

    • @hontoniarigato7956
      @hontoniarigato7956 Před 9 lety +1

      doktorbimmer Yes that is correct BUT You have to "prove" to Mazda that whatever problem you're having was not caused by improper care. For example if you have an aftermarket Intake that is not sold and installed by Mazda then they're going to throw that back at you. You can't just walk into Mazda and get a free anything it doesn't work like that. From the day the car left the dealership you have to show documents for every scheduled service and Prove to them that the problem you're having is from the engine itself and Not because you mishandled it. That's why if you buy a used RX8 its very little chance the previous owner(s) will have all serviced records from the day it left the dealership. You can call any US Mazda dealership they will tell you the same.

    • @doktorbimmer
      @doktorbimmer Před 9 lety

      Hontoni Arigato No, you do not need to contact Mazda. I think you are confused with the extended warranty compliance program..
      Everyone that was included in the mandatory NHTSA Recall would have received a letter from Mazda..
      The class action law suit is something completely different and does not require you to contact Mazda or the dealer. If you are eligible to be included in the class action lawsuit must contact the law office of the plaintif... if they have not already been in contact with you... the number of eligible owner is expected to increase so you may not have been contacted yet. If the court decides in favor of the plaintif you would receive a compensation payment or payments for damages... that's just how these things work. Cheers!

      @aidanhigby7333 Před 7 lety

      unfortunately I don't have mine anymore, the main thing to know is it isn't a car you can turn on to move around and turn straight off it pretty much needs to be up to operating temp before you bother trying to turn it off and make sure you keep your eye on the oil and keep it topped up and change it roughly every 5000kms. as long as it is up to operating tempo before you switch it off you shouldn't be able to flood it, if you have to move it in a driveway or something take it for a short drive before you turn it off. also when you first turn it on to drive when the engine is cold let it warm up for at least a minute then baby the car for the first 5 minutes of the drive or so until it is up to operating temp (keep it below 4k rpm and preferably stay around 3k rpm) then when it is at operating temp you can drive like a madman.

  • @tossom89
    @tossom89 Před 11 lety

    it dosnt live long if you dont know how to take care of it. I´ve seen plenty with 200.000+ km . You first have to understand that is very diferent from a piston engine and it needs diferent things to properly take care of it and yes it uses fuel comparable to a modern v8 engine and yes it uses more oil than a piston engine but i think its worth it because its smoother and has very linear torque that for me makes it predictable and fun to drive at the limit but is just my personal preference

      I have no issues when overtaking, for commuting I tend to keep the car around 2,500 RPM and just drive normally, if I'm driving more spiritedly, I tend to be at no less than 4,000 RPM, during these spirited drives, the car is getting rev'd like mad to make anything happen - but that's part of the characteristics of the rotary engine.

      The RX-8 is an absolute joy to drive, working through the long gears and hearing the unique rotary whine is quite simply a pleasure.
      The high maintenance and expensive running costs are just a small compromise to the truly outstanding chassis and suspension setup. The 8's ability to properly tackle a corner so dynamically is astounding in a car that can be picked up so cheap.
      The car was marketed to the wrong demographic at launch which has caused a very mixed opinion to be had on it over the last 10 years, it should have been marketed as being what it is, a fantastic, simple, back to basics drivers car.

      it will last as long as you want it to, all you have to do is take care of it correctly and keep up with REQUIRED maintenance that is normally only recommended for others and using correct start/stop procedures.

      gabrielgee5 1- the automatic is actually a lot more fun than most will have you believe despite the 30hp missing from the manuel version. I recommend learning stick, but if you don't want to the RX8 auto is a far better choice than most cars its age.
      2- If you dump a little bit of 2-stroke oil into the gas tank when you fill it up you essentially make the gasoline a secondary lubricant, circumventing many common issues with the apex seals.
      3- It is a sports car. Treat it like one. It can be used every day, but it isnt a mustang or a miata, you need to be attentive to your car's needs.
      4- being a total car nerd is a requirement. You say you aren't one now? Give it time, my friend.
      5- Resist the urge to give it hugs, no matter how much you end up loving it.
      A word on rebuilds:
      As far as when the dreaded day of engine rebuild comes, have a plan. At independent shops rebuilds can cost about $2000-$3000 and if you have some money set aside for it it is a nearly painless process. Even then it isnt that expensive, the car's reputation damaged its resale to the point where it costs about as much as a 350z after you factor in the rebuild, and since your insurance will see it as a "1.3L sedan", you will come out ahead with the RX-8 making it quite the economical choice... I know "economical" and "RX-8" in the same sentence, but it is true.
      Anyway, happy car shopping, I do recommend this car to anyone willing to love it as much as it deserves.

    Wrong petrol and the engine packs up? Wait 5 minutes for car to warm up....or engine packs up......wait 5 minutes for engine to cool down....or engine will pack up.......looks like rx8 owners spend most of there time (waiting) 😳

    So much negative comments, like in Russia. Rotary engine is awesome, but it requires better materials for it parts, and more precession assembling. Also it requires more experienced owners, owners of rotary cars should know more about cars then typical drivers of family van. And it’s too late for rotary engine, because combustion engines era is almost gone.

      +culz I don't think you know what the "RX" stands for in "RX-8". RX stands for Rotary Experiment. If they made a 6 cylinder version, it wouldn't make sense to call it a RX-8, because it wouldn't be a rotary engine.
