  • In this video I do some final repairs to the hull before it gets sandblasted and I put some Altex primer on it. I also give it a wash with Chlor-Rid Hold*Blast before painting so I can do some pad welding on the transom before it flash rusts.

    One of the lessons I've learned detailing my cars is that you can't always do every big project at once. If the interior needs a deep clean, just give the outside a wash and call it good until the next time. Trying to tackle everything at once makes it hard to focus and spend the time to get a good result in the area that needs the most work. I think what you're doing with the transom is a great idea. Focus on the crucial motor out stuff now and come back in a few years to tackle the next big project on the list. Great job.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  Před 5 lety

    That epoxy paint system sounds like a good way to go. Cleaning up the engine space when the motor is out is a must! Dealing with it now is just so easy, over trying to do it after the motor is back in. We use to paint the engine room sides and bulkheads white and the floor or hull a light gray with sand blasting sand rolled into the paint for nonskid. This works well in decks too and it's easy on bare feet too.

    I have worked on a lot of steel boats, usually we blast the entire hull, then coat in a product called Rust Bullet, then go about isolating repair areas. Reblast around the repair areas, weld, blast and Rust Bullet again. When all repairs are completed, epoxy barrier coat and topcoat/anti foul as needed....A small spot blaster would save you a shitload of grinding.....

    The antifouling that was identified is an ablative coating, meaning it wears away over time. For ablative paints it's very helpful to apply the coats in contrasting colors. This allows the coating to be touched up where the "under coat " color shows. This approach maximizes the life of the coating as it only needs to be recoated in areas where it's seen to wear away. Hi Stu, great vidz mate. With your stick welding rod's ,they like to absorb moisture from the atmosphere making them hard to strike and stuttery. Bake them in the oven for half an hour or so and use them hot. Sounds funny to non welders out there but the cooking instructions are on the pack ! looking forward to next installment !

    • @dimreaper274
      @dimreaper274 Před 5 lety

      Keeping rods hot is only for hydrogen controlled or low hydrogen rods, it keeps the moisture out which helps keep them low hydrogen. There is no other benefit then that except in winter cos you can heat a sausage roll in the oven

    BRAVO!!!!
    Now THAT was some great progress, Stu!
    Very nice to see you settling in with the stick welder and putting it to effective use.
    You aren't going to need to touch that transom for many years. If that primer and paint system is as good as it looks, it simply won't change. You did well.
    Nice job filling in the low spots. I'm surprised that the epoxy rep didn't tell you to hit any little repair areas with 40 grit on an orbital sander to roughen it up similar to a sandblasted finish. I would personally roughen it up a bit, to knock the shine off, then follow their instructions exactly.
    Thanks for taking the time to make this video, and congrats on the good progress. It's starting to really look good.

      Thanks Tony. I really enjoyed watching the welding videos you sent me, particularly the guy doing the pipe welding, so enthusiastic! I did run some 40 grit over the transom in the end. I also think the texture of the beads of weld will help all the epoxy (including the filler and fairing compound) to adhere. Can't wait until the weekend is over so I can push on! ;)

      I'm glad you liked them. Watching videos like that has certainly made me better, teaching me the finer things to look for while in the weld.
      Your beads are looking good!

      I think what I've learnt doing this job is how much heat builds up doing out of position welds so I'm running at much lower amps now. The deceptive thing is that hot out of position welds gloop a bit so that look tall which you normally associate with a cold weld. Dropping the amps right down made them much better. I'm going to weld up the fuel tank today so I'm going to clean up the cut, do a root pass and then grind like the guy in the video before doing the cap(s). Fingers crossed!

      Sounds good. Clean prep definitely makes for clean welds. Play with the amps as needed. You will do well. Everyone is rooting for you!

    if your doing square patches ,, make the patch first , then cut round it , and your hole will match the patch with a perfect space round it for welding ,, handy way of going.

    We use line heating to straighten out ship blocks, might be worth looking into for the dented area of your hull. You already have the oxy set.
