NATTY OR NOT: Chris Turner (My PHD thesis and reaction to 40 Roll)

- TLDR: I think he’s real, and if you weren’t skeptical too then you don’t understand just how difficult it is to play the drums like this.
I do not care about your opinion but please post it so I can ignore it. - Hudba
Sorry for blowing the reaction.
ahahahahahaha
“You are completely blowing’nis” 😂😂😂👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
He is the real deal and he doesn’t trigger his drums. I’ve been in the studio with him for days on end and he has actually sat down and played my kit. This guy puts in the work.
Definitely real, I’ve never seen a drummer quite like him. He stated that he did this whole song in one take with 0 samples or triggers. I agree though, a huge portion of metalcore drummers are not genuine whatsoever. Give me rawdog iPhone or EAD audio only baby
He actually posted a snippet of this song on his instagram story with JUST the camera audio. Definitely real.
It was one of 3 takes, it says it in the vid description. What a beast
I'm in the process of writing a prog metal solo EP. I'm making it a point to keep the drums as raw, unedited as possible. I don't like cheating people or myself of my skills.
i know it's kinda randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
@Joshua Arthur flixportal
Can we make natty or not a regular segment on the stream
Chris played a full live steam of this album. When he played 40 roll he had to do a second take because he wasn’t satisfied with the blasting section.
He's playing those flams on the kick on purpose, he uses the flams on the track Hansha at 2:38 in his playthrough and it's incredible!!!! Same in the vultures and sharks video posted by drummers anonymous at 0:34 the hertas he plays on the kick are phenomenal. The man's insane!!
"Conspiracy Theory Creg" looking if drums are played real or not
It’s 100% real, he tells this in every interview ever. There are videos of his studio engineers showing his isolated drum take, and then showing the small amount of editing they do to it just to make it sound a little cleaner, and it’s unreal. The realest most unreal thing ever. Just wild.
Someone please disect Craigs reaction in slow-motion and examine it for editing and samples. "When he said *whoever just subbed*, could have easily sample replaced that with one simple edit"...."Listening at 50% not all vowels were in 127. This might be a legit reaction video"
I just fucking spat out my coffee thanks
Super clever dude! Legit LOL!
He does flams on the bass drum a couple times in this song they're intentional.
he is one of the most consistent drummers i've ever witnessed haha. watch his other most recent playthroughs and studio stuff his consistency is actually explained, it's mental.
Can confirm he's kick flamming on purpose. He does that all the time! I find it really cool.
Yep he mentioned that in an interview
He’s one the only drummers doing it. He’s very special.
@@dustinbryant9586 Flams on kick aren’t a new thing man seen larnell Lewis do it a million times
@@rolllimbo973 read my comment smart guy. Never said it was new and never said he was the ONLY one, but I guess reading isn’t your strong suit.
@@dustinbryant9586 still doesn’t make any sense big guy. You just said he’s one of the only drummers doing it but a ton of drummers have thrown kick flams down on a track before so don’t know what you point is?
3:52 I fucking burst out laughing when you said "I think it might be real" LMAO
"My phone's blowing up, have I been cancelled or sum'ting?"
I almost died laughing! This was great.
This is a cool and humorous investigative piece in the Craig fashion that I dig about ya mate. You’re funny when you’re not even trying to be funny. Let’s face it, there’s nothing try-hard about ya! Legit props Craig!
In case you haven't watched his "making of" video, he wrote that kick flam in there just to fuck with other drummers and drum reactors. It's a little easter egg.
You know, you could actually call him up and talk to him about this project!
I saw u in Chicago back in 2019 with counterparts n I've been practicing so fuckin hard just like u told me m8 thank you so much. I met a drummer whose heavily influenced by Chris Turner hes been helping me alot too
100% real. I was recording drums at that very studio (Edge studios in Macclesfield) a few weeks after the 40 roll session and I asked the engineers who worked with Chris when he was there about whether he used samples, they all said he was completely natty! He's just a MACHINE. It also helps that the people working at the studio are incredible at achieving metal drum tones. Also, I used your 'Loudest in the room' track as my drum reference! :D
Ok so,
You say a thing, i say a thing, aight?
I know for a fact that there are samples on a lot of his stuff on record. Is that his choice? no, it's the choice of the mixing engineer, but trust me; it is true
Does that affect his playing at all? No!
chris always does those kick flams you mentioned at the end! sounds super cool and its fun to learn
You have “litch really” changed my life with the video speed feature. And also for the input on this dude. I didn’t believe it was natural for the longest time, solely off the way the dude looks when he plays
Instantly my favorite content creator
love these long vids man. keep em coming
I love the fear in your voice, knowing this might be real haha
Everything about this video is great!
Im so glad you mentioned the "SJC" drummer hahaha
Can't get into his band, but love watching this guy play drums. He's my favorite drummer to awe over.
Wow, I thought I could hear drums great and now you helped me unlock another level, Thank you good sir
Informative and hilarious. Love this channel.
Awesome break down dude, the guy is a beast!
dude, got your videos in my feed lately and you are a monster. tbh after reading your titles i was a bit prejudiced but your stuff is funny and, for a drummer, very enlightening.
+ i was stunned when i noticed that you wrote the drums for the haarp machine. always thought it was rudy and this was one of my introductions to technical music.
glad about your videos and thanks from germany!
Thanks! Unfortunately you need these titles to get in peoples feeds. Thanks for the kind words about disclosure, I also recorded the drums on the record but they faked it to look like it was rudy! Peace!
Saw Mr Turner perform the whole Steezy album live last december, trust me he is 100% legit a Robot never seen a drummer naturally so gifted in my life!!!
Chris also made a video stating he wasnt gonna be using any samples and all the drum takes on the album is what your seeing live in this video which I think is madddd
Hey Craig the transitions and set look good as fuck. Good job on making this stream look really good my man.
Very nice assessment and thesis, Craig, enjoyed it thoroughly. By the way the drummer from Vader, James Stewart is an impressive display of natty drumming
Another tell he’s real in my opinion is when he plays the faster sections on the kick he really leans in with his hips to get as much power out of the drum as possible.
Also the flub you talked about at 25:10 is a flam. He wrote in some kick drum flams. I bought the notation package and he’s talked about doing kick flams in interviews.
Chris is a foot dominant drummer. Not the he doesn’t have awesome hands. He just has a very foot-centric style, so the inconsistency in the rimshots is a testament to the legitimacy of this recording AND the fact that this dude has focused his practice to a razor’s edge for that level of precision.
Chris turner is by far my favourite drummer, but every other reaction is just like yeah hes the best and they take what he says for granted. Its great to have an in depth analysis of his production.
"I think it might be real"
Best reaction channel out there
I love everything about this video!!!
So I checked out that SJC guy you mentioned and that sound you made at @13:22 was the most accurate thing I’ve ever heard in my life.
I thought you were exaggerating 😂
Who was he talking about? My first though was Jay from Slipknot but I'm not sure at all
@@kevinaman8266 He’s talking about Devin Attard. You can find it on the SJC Instagram page or Devins.
@@SalArteagaDrums oooooh yeah, the dude with the drums that are so sampled that it ended sounding like cardboard haha, thanks man
I’ve seen him live. He’s utter dogshit compared to his videos. They’re so incredibly sampled over it’s hilarious. He was one of the sloppiest drummers I’ve sat and watched. His band hollow front was on the same festival as my band and we played right before they did. Sat right next to his drums and it’s nowhere near as clean as his videos. Dude straight up sucks live.
Loving Teacher Creg coming out a bit in these videos. @ Drumeo give this man a course on something
I've seen Chris live in Brisbane with oceans ate Alaska holy shit he's a machine. Stupid fast foot work and super accurate performance. I highly rate his playing and he has quiet a unique style.
Chris is the GOAT in this genre.
But, is he the GOAT? My guess is that he’d excel at any genre. I hate to be a super fan, but I thinks he’s most likely the best drummer in the world.
@@jtapp83 There's no "greatest drummer" or "greatest guitarist". There's people who excel in certain ways.
Matt Garstka, Alex Rudinger and Larnell Lewis are all absolute top of the game drummers, but none of them are really better than the other because they do different things.
You nailed it dude, I try and be natural with my playing and videos. I can't tell you how many times I've had engineers, fellow drummers, and other musicians tell me to use drum replacement so it'll hit harder. I respectfully tell them no lol.
I’ve seen him live a couple times. He’s gnarly man! Checkout his older posts on instagram too and he has a bunch of videos on practice pads with metronomes and everything. The man is nuts!
Those tiny little imperfections you point out in this performance carry even more weight when you factor in that Turner said this was his second attempt _of three_ in recording this video. He honestly thought he could do even better.
I believe that the sound engineer just did a really really good job with the mic’ing and the mixing. A shit Ton of compression And limiting could explain the dynamics. Mixing is an art in itself my bro
chris´s sound engineer said compressors ruin his kick cause its already so strong by itself :D
Chris turner is quite literally the ONLY drummer that i have ever seen in my entire life that can play as fast as he can with his technique. He's as pure brute force as it gets. No heal toe technique, no Moeller technique on his hands or relying on rebounds. Nothing but full strokes of every single note
100% legit , Ive seen him play harder stuff live without a single problem rofl.
Sure i could be wrong and i know there are tons of ways to fake this both in studio and live but I choose to believe its real based on my short interactions with Chris.
Exactly. Chris Turner - High Horse
is a way harder track and he did that in one take on Vic Firth (youtube channel) as well. 40 roll is basic af lmao
Please react to "El Estepario Siberiano´s" drumming, you will enjoy it.
Love the Phil Collins analogy. Chris Turner is drooling tier stuff.
i JUST FUCKING SAWR HIM ON THOSE BASS HITS..I SAW EVERY FUCKING HIT! YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE SNARE BEING ON AND OFF..BUT IVE BEEN WATCHING THIS MAN PLAY AND IVE SEEN THE FEET AND DRUM HITS BE ON TIME OVER AND OVER AGAIN..PERSONALLY I HAVE NO REASON TO THINK THIS MAN HAS JUST KIND OF SET THE STANDARD FOR UNBELIEVABLY TIGHT DRUMMING!
I see videos like this and it’s like “yes Chris, I need to practice harder, I know. Thank you. Ffs.”
Its a great thing in life to be skeptical but this guy is of course legit and a machine
loved your air drumming personation at 16:39 haha
You should watch the practice pad videos he has on his Instagram, for tapping on the floor, no shoes or pedals with no pad but you can hear the pure power in his legs, blows my mind everytime
He is legit, turner has been talked about (don't remember if it was him saying it or his buddies in the studio recording it) about how he doesn't use triggers or samples, he hashes things out to a level of perfection, muscles every note
Doesn't mean the engineer doesn't put samples on it, though.
Nick Sampson took over Chris’s Instagram when the haters wouldn’t stop and held his phone to his computer screen so you could see the tracks go by and what he put on them. And, if playing that well wasn’t enough, he refurbished the snare he’s playing. You should watch the behind the scenes video of recording for I Am Abomination. It’s eye opening as to how much of an alien this dude is.
P.S. that’s the second kick flam in the song
i watched this 2 years ago but i just realized that when he does the 2 kicks together, hes doing a flam with kicks, ON PURPOSE, hes insane
I was really curious if this video was real or not. Absolutely impressed. Also nice to see someone shitting on fake playthroughs. Love it.
I find it so hard to believe that a drummer so tense with such horrific posture can actually sound so good. Look like a robot, play like a robot I suppose.
Yeah he's 100% legit. OAA live is a sight to behold, their songs aren't great (imo) but as musicians they are all outstanding. Also I realise that I have a reaction based channel and you probably hate me but man's got to grustle in his own way. Plus I support you on Patreon so you have no choice but to be nice to me.
I like it when a song has 100 meter or time changes. But I like simpler or other music too.
@@mr_torle A lot of their stuff is actually in 4, Chris just used lots of music/rhythmic theory and makes it sound like a different time signature, or maybe a tempo change.
Chris Turner is not a normal drumm3r...as usual, he is unique and the beauty of this hole experience is that, the uniqueness of each other!!!
100% legit, 100% skills ... as you!
We, as "Human/robots/body´s" have a old tendecy 2 critice others ... yeah, "habbits" that WE/you are quitting :D
its AweSoMe that we are experience the "collective" counsciousness or different bodies with extra human skillz!!!
ahahaha
That´s tha future ifriend :)
🌈
I love every your cons word about it. Because i'm just getting sick with people reaction *AWESOME, THIS GUY IS SICK, BLA BLA*
Every pros, need cons.
I really appreciate you giving detail about Velocity, and Shitty Drum Sounds while they slowed down the video speed.
Great video man!
Really love it!
You should go to local drum cover and say about faking drumming like the one asian guy covering Infant Annihilator - Soil The Stillborn. I'm getting sick he's not admit that he was fucking fake player
Edit: Chris used to be sampled his drum in early OAA album until *Hikari* released, his drumming pure 100% his own drum sound.
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about drumming this is fascinating
The height of his seat to get true hip power through the kick, and his cymbals angled away to make sure every cymbal hit is edge and creates full volume.
OMG that blastbeat in Demolisher is the ultimate dead giveaway when comparing these.
Life goals to be good enough a drummer to where Craig is breaking down my videos like this hahaha!!
About the flams on the feet. He’s mentioned in multiple interviews he loves doing flams on his feet. He does it in one of OAA’s song “Hansha” quite distinctively as well! There’s a drum playthrough to that on SABIAN’s channel, you should check that out man!
God damn, you are entertaining.
Love the video and your kinda passive aggressive attitude haha.
He has said in interviews that he refuses to play anything triggered or altered. At the end of OAA shows he is drenched in sweat because he puts in the work physically. He even admits that he has his limits and he gets tired because all of the stuff he does is just pure strength.
See Chris! He loved it!
Lmao.
It really sounded like you're dissing his playing. "It sounds shit". Nah, but I get you. This guy is a possessed beast. Always loved his drumming bits. And he does do flam kicks deliberately, he's mentioned this in a reaction video where he was guest.
Loved your reaction to my favourite drummer 👍
those slaughter to prevail 127-velocity-gravity-blasts fuck me up everytime :D so ridiculous
Try his playthrough of Heir to the Throne, its pretty slick
Or Sebastian Lesner of Obscura, his playthrough of An Epilouge of Infinity is sick
Theres also a video where his engineers praise him for not using triggers, also flams on the bass are dope
What do you use to record your videos? Like you're video reacting to the actual Chris Turner video?
having come over from the zack grooves reaction video, he mentions the kick flams as being something he really likes doing
his right foot is even slightly higher pitched than his left foot which is accurate to the spring action on his pedals and the slight offset on the placement of the pedal against the skin. the dudes insane
I fucking love this guy. I love this breakdown of Chris’s playing too. It’s brilliant.
Dude you’re hilarious the pure refusal to believe he’s natty is gold, also yea he’s said in interviews he likes to flam his kicks because he finds in fun and hard
Also why don’t u like oaa they slap
Seems pretty legit. Sometimes they quantize or slicex post, so it could sound slightly different than how it looks.
25:30 yeah, he meant to flam. He loves flamming his kick.
@14:24 I can't for the life of me picture Nolly sayin " Y O " lmaoooo
Im back here checking the vibe after Mr Turner being on The Downbeat podcast
all of chris' more recent solo tracks DON'T have triggers. he hits unbelievably hard to get his tone. the mics are so nice that you can cleanly single out each hit. this is a true mindfuck.
Looks real to me although I wouldn't be surprised if some things were sample replaced etc. and you have your obvious Eq'ing and compression etc.
Psyched to see someone else watches drummers slowed down. I'm also a fan of watching drummers muted; I find it helps for analysis of physical technique.
This guy is fucking so good.
That kick drum glam was fully intentional, I've watched the stream of him talking through all of this track and he loves to throw in flams on the kicks because it makes him laugh hahaha
when you speak about slaughter to rpevail, u speak about the old drummer or the new one ?
Chris is the goat dude that's all there is too it 😂 unbelievable drummer
25:28 are definitely flams on the kick. He has said before that he loves putting in flams during the kicks.
give lord marco a listen, he’s pretty speedy
Id love to see your thoughts on Nic Peterson from Northlane
I’m with you completely. His band are average at best, but technicality wise, this dude is unbelievably sick.
average at best? lol ookay- I love Oceans Ate Alaska and I am Abomination is amazing. Definitely a subjective piece but I'd disagree w/ the "average" statement lol
@@ShaneDizzin It sounds like a pretty average chugfest to me. Each to their own though!
A year late on this, watching this dude play SCREAMS that this dude watched any and all Travis Orbin media or was taught by Travis Orbin. That is not a bad thing at all. It brings up another question… will there ever be a deep dive into Travis with Craig? Travis on the pod? I’m in
25:33 it definetely was supposed to be a flam. He drew attention to it during an interview. (With the youtube jazz drummer, forgot his name)
Those are kick flams... those aren't mistakes. He does them all the time.
