Excellent video but i still don't understand how to use the articulations in track instead of key switch, would like to see typical user cases since i am a visual type of learner.
Josh, I see you are routing instruments from within their own folder...to reverbs in another folder. I have had crashes when I do that. Am I understanding the video correctly?
Hello, Joshua. I am trying in hopes of getting your response. The question is if you find inspiration in the sounds you go getting in the process, I mean while you're setting your sounds in your DAW, or if you try to finish writting your pieces before starting to work in Reaper. I am a singer, actually I might consider myself as a songwriter also (let's say I am an independent artist and have a natural gift as vocalist). So, I'm starting to produce in Reaper and I see it complicated to handle so many tracks. One more question would be if you progress in Reaper in the direction of quitting tracks while you determine you have obtained in a section the sound or finish desired... I mean, you progress adding or substracting channels/tracks? Thank you, buddy.
Hey! Thanks for the question. It's a mix of both. The more complex the music is, the more likely I am to sketch in pencil and paper before going into Reaper. Though, there are plenty of times where the virtual instruments in Reaper give me inspiration. On that note, I try to only add tracks when I know I need an additional layer or instrument. Sometimes, I know I need something, but I don't know what. I'll add a track and explore some options.
Not at the moment, but it could be cool to make a clean template using stock plugins and track templates in the future. I know these templates can suck to set up.
Interesting video, I was wondering how you handle automations? I find that when I have my MIDI on sub-tracks and my Kontakt on the parent folder, if I want to move a MIDI item the automations won't follow unless I manually move them or create a blank MIDI item on the parent track
Thanks! In the upper left-hand corner (where your toolbar icons are), there is an icon that says "Envelope Points Do Not Move With Media Items". If you click that it will change to "Envelope Points Move With Media Items". That will let you move all your midi items with the automation. Personally, I like to keep it disabled until I need it to avoid any accidents with my automation.
@@JSMallard Thanks for the answer! My issue is that my automation is not on the same track as my MIDI items (I have 1 kontakt on the parent folder & a bunch of sub-tracks that correspond to each instrument in that instance of Kontakt)
You can do that through reapers custom actions. If you goto view/toolbar docker you can open up your toolbar. Then when you click the edit button, you will see a window of actions. At the lower left, there should be an add button. Clicking that will let you select any custom action to add to your toolbar.
I liked OTR quite a bit, actually! I did a soundtrack with it, but ended up switching back to custom templates. OTR is fleshed out, but has too many features that I don't use. It's also hard to change the theme or use OTR on small monitors.
This is killer stuff dude! Super helpful for working out how to organise the masses of instruments you end up with doing orchestral work

Toolbar docker is too cool. Definitely going to play around with that
Toolbar docker really saves so much time. Thanks!
Thx fir the video. You didnt show how you router tracks and folders though…thats super important. Where do you route your orchestra folder?
So cool 🔥😍
Thanks! Glad it helped!
Great and efficient organization: thanks for sharing. What is your Reaper theme?
That's Inquasar Dark Matter.
Thank you brother. Can you tell me what skin are you using?

Curious about Lachenmann mock ups?
I might have to hire someone for that lol

This is a very nice informative video indeed. Is there any chance the reaper template you have created can be downloaded?

how did you set up your toolbar docker to transpose midi an octave up and down?

@@JSMallard thank you very much
Dude, just get OTR for Reaper - you can thank me later.

@@JSMallard He's just released v2, its pretty good now, and its free/donationware. You can use custom themes, I use the Smooth 6 which looks amazing.
@@CybreSmee Woah!! I might have to get back into it then. The convenience for rendering stems alone is really useful.
@@JSMallard Yeap, and the new version does away with all that silly naming convention V1-M, VI-C etc...very clever software.
