Without trackpads I don't think it deserves a steam logo. At best it's a decent general purpose controller.
Why do you need trackpads?
I have a steamdeck and they are mostly useless as most games don’t use them. It’s not meant to replace a mouse and to be used in 4x or God games. It’s for games that work better on controller such as Yakuza (which doesn’t use trackpad) or games like Dirt Rally (also doesn’t support trackpad on steamdeck unless you change it to) and who would?
Look at the PS5 controller. So expensive just because of the force feedback triggers and that silly touchpad that barely has a use outside of Astro.
@@razerow3391 Trackpads allow for natural feeling mouse-input as well as MUCH better text-input. With a tiny bit of practice you can type on the trackpads with speed and precision nearing a real keyboard. I would die of frustration if I tried to use sticks for the majority of things I would use a mouse for on day-to-day PC use. If you use steam deck only for games that support controller input well, and you like using sticks (I hate them), then you might find little use for them. If you use your Steam Deck as a PC, trackpads are indispensable. I often hook up my steam deck to a monitor or TV and browse the web, and a controller without trackpads would be worse than a $5 keyboard controller for that use case.
Despite the fact I will be buying one, I agree. Though gyro is appreciated a lot.
The 10 foot experience is exactly where I want the touchpads, as the whole point of buying a steam deck over other similar devices is to play those games not designed for game controllers.
My reasoning was the opposite. I bought it specifically for games designed to be played with controller. Although, when a game isn't designed for controller, those track pads are a blessing.
Yeah exactly I played so many rts games by now it is amazing, I am still blown away how I can play just about anything on the steam deck! Not to mention Fallout 1 and 2🤯

I think people are not getting the full picture with the Hori x Steam gamepad.
Sure, there are no trackpads, so it's not a steam controller 2. What we got instead is that Valve is allowing companies to bring their own secret sauce to the platform, get a Valve stamp on it, in exchange for tight integration of Steam's features.
This means we're getting more features, and more variety, which can only be a good thing. I'll definitely be buying one, despite missing the trackpads dearly.
The steam controller feels like a slap in the face, I've seen posts for years of people hoping for a sequel to the steam controller specifically because of the track pads.
I think it's necessary for them not to make a steam controller 2 yet. Keep in mind they are trying to appeal to a wide game audience. Most people aren't ready for a controller with track pads yet. They need to first do a "normal" controller to get one in the market before they can do something more niche like a steam controller 2, despite the fact that fans like me really really want one. I'm sure it will come. But they've been burned on bad investments before. I'm confident that steam machines would be great today, but they didn't pan so well the first round. Valve can't just take huge hits for our sake.
@@durhamskater3212 normally I would agree with you, but the steam deck was a breakout success and it had dual trackpads. There are now tons of people who are familiar with the trackpads, and quite a lot of them actually use them. And for the first time, it's not missing any major features from the competition. I imagine there are a lot of PC gamers that have a decent PC and a steam deck for when they are out. If a second steam controller with a steam deck layout were released, it would mean you could seamlessly move between them without having to use completely different configurations. That would be a big deal for casual gamers that just want one controller configuration that they can use for everything.
I was really excited for the new controller with trackpads, that being said, I'll still buy it

@davinwilliams3130 I'm sure they are working on it. The wheels are turning, just slowly. You know how much work it takes to make proton? The resources required to launch the steam deck you mentioned? And now they're getting sued for billions of dollars. I'm honestly thankful for what we've got so far. Let them dip their toes if that's what they need.
As I stated in the original video this feels more like they took one of there generic controller setups and slapped a Steam logo on the one button to grab hardcore Steam users, there are other controllers at affordable prices available.
I use a Logitech F710 which is an older model but is still an amazing control, has rumble support, very affordable, and works great in Linux.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I think I'll stick to my 8bitdo Ultimate Bt.
The 8bitdo Ultimate Bt comes with almost all of the features of this controller, and also has rumble, Hall Effect joysticks, dedicated software for customizing the controller, a Switch mode, and is shipped with a charging dock for about the same price as this Hori controller.
I might switch in the future if either Hori or Valve come up with a controller with a touchpad, but for now, I see no reason to buy this new Hori controller.
It has buttons specifically for Mouse buttons and the analog sticks are capacitive.
At the very least those two are _very_ specifically Steam Deck oriented

The steam controller HAS ME STOKED! The Steam Deck was my first PC gaming device. After I fell in love with that I got a windows desktop to run like a console. It legit sits in a media closet and feeds into a projector.
Being able to have the gyro+capacitive buttons will be perfect!

love it, I have a similar desktop setup! Once I realized I only use that computer and projector for games and movies it was easy enough to make the switch to ChimeraOS and set it up to run with a controller from my couch instead of bloated Windows with keyboard and mouse.

As long as holding the Steam button shut the controller off its a huge improvement from anything else available at the moment. You can hold STEAM and use the right stick as a mouse when you need it.
I like the Steam Deck's capacitive sticks. They're great for playing MMO and other games where you need to hold right click to move the camera. That's the only use case I personally have for them, but it's a big use case. Also, the lack of the track pads is a deal breaker for a Steam controller. They are so useful for minor mouse inputs and are a quick way to slap dozens of extra key binds on the circle menus.
100%. I use the touchpads for far more than just mouse input. No touchpads, no purchase.
Steamdeck is still the best Steam controller IMO. Configurable touchpads with haptics and four (non-paddle) “back paddle” buttons. Can’t beat it.
Yeah I don't know why people call buttons on the back of a controller paddles? I call buttons on the back of the controller grip buttons because they're kind of on the grips of the controller.
Now on the other hand if you make a controller that's basically just a knob you can twist then I would call that controller a paddle controller.
Gardiner, turbo buttons are great for classic games like Tiger heli, megaman, etc. Anything that shoots once when you press shoot. This could apply to weapons in contra, castlevania, Mario fireballs, etc.
Big question is can you connect multiple hori steam controller to the deck at once.

If basically every company ever can put rumble in their controllers since the PlayStation 1 days then there's no reason Hori can't do it here. By the way until the PlayStation 4 none of those controllers even had track pads so it has nothing to do with the track pads.

I actually really like the concept of a trackpad-free variant of the steam controller, with first class steaminput support of course. The trackpadded steam controller is a boon for enabling couch play of a lot of games, but for certain games its nice to use 2 thumb sticks (personally twin stick feels harder when i cant feel where the center position is on a trackpad vs feeling the angle of the top of a stick or the hard edge of its travel as a reference point) so i find myself swapping to a an XBone, and I'd love to have a more integrated steam controller take on the 360/one controller as an option for those cases.
I didn't like the touchpads on the original steam controller, and the plastic shell felt very cheap. I just got it in my head the other day to check if there was maybe a new Steam Controller in the making yet -- and all this stuff about the Hori Steam Pad came up barely a day old. Analogue sticks -- which I'm used to -- extra paddles underneath, pretty cool appearance. Yeah, I am definitely going to get my hands on one of these :)
Just give me a controler with exact layout of the steam deck and I would be happy. I am so use to the DECK that it would be seamless to have that in a controller. I don't even care what it looks like as long as it feels the same in my hands.
The recording feature looks really interesting. I seem to recall most YpuTubers like NerdNest using a dock and external capture card to record. I have never recorded my game play before, and I don't know what I would do with the recordings, but if it's this easy, maybe I can find a use case? Question: can you record to a MicroSD card?

I am interested in this, but the lack of the touchpads hurts. I probably will try this, just as a PC gamepad. I don't own a steamdeck yet but I'd like the touchpad to try out Steam Input stuff for like Age of Empires and stuff.
At the very least its a native PC compatible gamepad, with gyro. Which I like.
There are other options for that but this should work well.
I've already submitted feedback on the recording feature, but what I said there was, if possible, I want Valve to separate each application into its own audio track.
Because I want to capture specific applications, but sometimes I just want the game audio and my microphone and not my folks over stuff like Discord. Or maybe other times I want to bring them in, middle recording, I just want the extra flexibility of having separate audio tracks.
Very excited for these controllers! I don't use trackpads outside of desktop mode, so that is no loss for me.
putting game recorder inside of steam is great, cant wait till its out of beta though
The constant recording could affect SSD or MicroSD lifespan and I've been worried about that since having an Nvidia card and that SSD dying. When I switched to AMD they have it stored in the GPU's VRAM so no issue there, but on Steam Deck is there enough? Probably not, but cool nonetheless!
They should have included 1 track pad like the ps5 dual Sense controller 🎮

Isn't touchpad haptics being heavily watched by a patent troll? Having that official controller is cool and I would hate to see something like this delayed over it. I doubt they have the same fighting capabilities as valve lawyers do
No, the patent problem with the steam controller was the back/grip buttons not the haptic
I’d buy it for the capacitive sticks alone. Having the ability to map mouse/right joystick to gyro I can make do with it. NGL it would have been perfect if they could have at least added a right touchpad…
The "Official"(not really) Steam controller Mk 2 is only being sold in Japan, which is weird.
This is definitely just a Test run to see how much it would work and how popular it would be in comparison to other ones.
The Japan only thing is very weird though.
Hori Pad isn't quite on par with the ps4 controller with grip button attachments but at ot's price point it's competitive.
If they make a console-like device, they should make sure parents can control and add games to their childrens' libraries from the Steam app on mobile. There is some degree of family sharing and stuff already. But they should make it easy for non-steam users to be parents of steam users.
Why is that controller asymmetric? The Steam Deck has symmetric placement of the sticks for a reason. Also I have some pain that's developed in my hands and that right side of it seems painful to me.
The Steamworks CZcams channel has a new video on how to implement the Steam API for game recording so you can add custom icons to the game recording timeline.
Def be on the lookout for the actual Steam Controller 2 the Hori stick is simply the first licenced offering!

Why can't any of these manufacturers make something comparable with the DualShock4? All I want is the ergo and features of the DS4 with hall effect sticks + triggers, and native PC support for headset plugged into the controller while controller is wireless. Bonus points if it has a touchpad.

I just don't get why they would even bother releasing a new Steam branded controller in the post Steam Deck era without touch pads. The capacitive sticks are nice though, at least that will make Gyro work pretty well.
Hopefully the dpad is pretty good, since the one on the Steam deck itself is pretty lacking. Hori has a specialty in fighting pads so I would sure hope so.
Here I am still using my WiiU pro controller for my pc games. Zero drift, 80 hours battery. Can’t beat it.
I've used a few Hori controllers over the years, always comfortable and reliable.
iirc hori just doesn’t do haptic feedback in their controller so don’t get your hopes up.
I have wanted a second Steam Controller that fixes the issues with the first. I love the Steam controller!!
It is disappointing that Hori's Steam pad doesn't have rumble, but I might still buy it anyway. If this controller is successful, other controller manufacturers will take notice. 8bitdo, Gullikit, and more will probably partner with Valve for their own Steam controllers!
Who knows, maybe Hori might make a pro version of this gamepad with haptics, 2 extra back buttons, and maybe even trackpads!
Paying them to do less isn't going to encourage them to do more. Let the controller flop and let them know exactly why it flopped.

:( I'm very disapointed. I dreamd of a Steam Controller "Pro" which wiped the floor with every other controller ;). So I wished it gets at least 2 back buttons, Sony style HQ rumble, adaptive force feedback triggers, two trackpads, halleffect sticks and triggers, maybe a little OLED for configuration, a charging dock for two controllers, magnetic switchable sticks and dpads, spring rate ajustments, mic, speaker... all things which already exists, someone just have to weld all together. And then I hoped for some exiting new "Valve" feature, eg. OLED face Buttons (like on a stream deck) so that we can swap lables for PC, Sony and Nintendo/Emu Games per SteamInput on the fly. I would preorder 3 if we get all this for 300$ (per piece OC) :D!! This is just another controller with half the features we know and want. Especially no-trackpads is seriously disapointing. For many older PC games and EMU stuff I need a Mouse for the Menus.
This isn't Valve. This is Hori. Call me an opportunity, but we're going to see a true first party successor to the Steam Controller soon. I have no insider knowledge, this is just speculation on my part.
@@gardiner_bryant I know. And don't get me wrong. I'm very greatfull of what we geht with the Deck and it's Ecosystem. I use Linux for ... IDK ... over 20y or so. And the Deck was my re-entry to serious Gaming. BUT at the same time, I see the potential for the "ultimate" controller to rule them all ;) right in front of me :D and I desperately want it. I think I'm disapointet with every controller since the SNES or A500 area, and that feeling builds up ;)... So PLEASE Valve, build that dream for us, a Lite version for normal people, and an ultimate-mega-pro version for the crazy ones which can spend what it costs to get the best of the best.

Personally, after owning both, I still recommend the OLED. While the screen is nice, the stand-out features of the OLED vs LCD is the thermal performance and extended battery life. If mobility is your key usecase for getting the Deck, then OLED all the way.
Haptic feedback requires licensing... All the big players have been sued (as well as valve) for it

no trackpads... no deal. 90% of the games I play I need trackpads... and I like them on 100%.
I was hoping that a 2.0 Steam controller would *add* sticks, not swap the touchpads for them. I want more control options, not alternate. Oh well, I'll wait until 3.0 and see what they do.
This is not the Steam Controller 2. It's an officially licensed third party Steam Gamepad. I thought I made that clear.

I find the PS5 dual sense to be the best - it has the trackpad which can be used as a mouse curer in emergencies, and you get full functionality with the PS games. I ditched my playstation because of this.
People complaining about the lack of trackpads really don't realize that the Steam Deck could have them because its size meant it could also have analog sticks and a d-pad, if you tried to have all three things on a normal controller it's gonna be huge and possibly uncomfortable, it's either it has trackpads or it has analog sticks, not both.
Couldn't be more wrong. The reason Hori didn't include trackpads here is very, very simple. This is a Horipad. Horipads--regardless of platform--have an identical form factor because they all use the same injection molds (which cost tens of thousands of dollars). Hori wasn't about to create a custom injection mold for a gamepad that wasn't likely to justify the investment. But what they *could* do is just swap out the thumbstick modules for touch sensitive ones since that has nothing to do with the outer shell.
But also, the Steam Deck is the most comfortable gaming device ever created. Adapt that to a standalone controller and you have the most comfortable controller ever created.
@@gardiner_bryant Fair, that's something I didn't consider, but again, I can't help but think that a standalone controller with trackpads, a d-pad, and two analog stick would be fairly big, bulky, and heavy. Would love to be proven otherwise tho.

Although in this case this might not even be the case, if the Hori one supports Steam Input properly then it has a leg up on the Sony one in my book
i'll stick to a ps5 controller, this new device has an xbox style thumbstick layout i really do not like, also no touchpad = no deal, why even bother without them,, its basically just an xbox controller clone at that point and those already exist by the fistload. There have been joke pictures of people just taking the deck layout and shrinking it down to a mini controller size and that would have been ideal and kept all the buttons/trackpads.

Literally zero difference. The only sickness is the way people police language as if there's some arbiter of correctness.
Looks like crap. Not replacing my DualSense or if I still had it a Series X controller. I would love a premium gamepad with a "Steam-first" mentality but it's also up to Valve to personally support the controller on a game to game basis.
Right now Sony has made the perfect controller for me until whatever console refresh changes that dynamic. The last 5 years Xbox controllers have driven me to drink with their constant USB disconnects.
No rumble or track pads? It's literally just an Xbox controller with a steam logo. What a huge letdown, rumble is massive. Those little immersive jolts during gameplay is one of the biggest reasons I prefer a controller over a keyboard/mouse. Rumble is so good nowadays it's a crime it doesn't have anything

It’s definitely in beta. I really do hope they can iron out the problems it has rn. Like you said you shouldn’t have to click y every single time you wanna pull up the timeline the problem with Linux sometimes is that there are just problems that you can’t solve no matter how hard you try
