Thanks for your reaction, I loved it! Mick Hucknall wrote Holding Back The Years at age 17 and is full of references to his life. "Strangled by the wishes of pater" refers to his difficult relationship with his father and "Holping for the arms of mater" refers to the fact that Mick's mother abandoned him when he was 3 years old.
allmost 40 years later and mick still sounds as good as he did when he first sang this. Amazing performer and voice...

the song was written by mick hucknall as a young boy back in the i think 70s in his bedroom when he was a young boy at his family home in manchester uk. all about his bag upbringing by his parents . he later recorded it with his found band simply red and became obviously a master peace .amazing voice the clarity is surreal and soul
