Hailing from Seattle, the Fastbacks' albums contain some of the greatest music made on this side of the pond since the Temptations and the Beach Boys. Kim Warnick was the David Ruffins of her genre with the Queen sensibilities of Kurt Block and the harmonies of Lulu Gargiulo as well as a plethora of drummers, the Fastbacks made several albums from the late 80's to the mid 90's, and if you like them, go further with Guided By Voices who are like pop-punk on opioids.

I think the biggest turn was when Gen Y (because thats what we were originally) suddenly became "Millenials" and basically started lumping true 90s Gen Y w 2000s kids as a whole. And we are pissed. And not just cuz we are basically being shoved in w the era where music, tv and all that fantastic "kids growing up" stuff died, but also because "Millenials" became a negative term for everything gone wrong. Which infact we Gen Y have nothing to do with..its all late 2000s and Gen Z.

      A major problem with punk rock transitioning into mainstream music like Greenday is that the social and political commentary of the genre had to be blunted in order to appeal to a wider audience. Pop Punk can't express existential dread about capitalism when it's literally the force that makes it popular, so they have to take that angst and interpret it as adolescent pain. Selling the idea that your teenage anxiety is both unique and a common phase. It helps kids cope with cultural alienation, but it isolates people into thinking that our problems are only caused by emotional expressions and leaves us unequipped to notice systematic forms of oppression (something that the original punk scene tried to spread awareness of)

      @Tony catt "Not all punks against capitalism" sure, but that doesn't change the simple fact the genre was created as a response to rock becoming too established in advertisements and social elites. Only reason punk even exists is because enough people where sick of how commercialized rock became. Doesn't matter what you want to call it, doesn't change the fact that overproduced music created by multi billion dollar corporations had an effect in creating a schism in a genre of music. Or that during the schism millions of youth where forced into a war with the help of old Elvis-esk rock idols to sell the idea of patriotism.

      @daltonfilho835 Před 4 lety +11

      @Tony catt if you're afraid of socialism, at no point I've said punk is socialist, punk is anarchist, 2 different left wing groups that actually fight all the time, both are anti-capitalism but socialism aims for a initial phase of change through heavy government and closed borders, while anarchism aims for a society controlled solely by citizens and no frontiers, anarchism is inherently against authority so anarchists wouldn't approve of a heavy government like in socialism, and punk was molded by anarchism, so it's againts authority and inequality, this conformity of a hive mind they're against comes from authoritarian and/or class based systems. Now it's true that some punks ain't anarchists, Joey Ramone for example supported Reagan and Ian Curtis supported Tatcher, but those types of guys are usually the butt joke of the community.

    So interesting story about Billie joe and the I heart music show. I was working at the venitian at a French restaurant in Vegas. The night of that concert Green Day came up to the bistro, nicest people in the world but we brought Billie probably 12 drinks in like 2 hours and he was fucking hammered. Like singing his own songs at the bar as “warm ups” just being wild and the life of the party. They gave out tickets to the managers and to servers and took pics and left(Billie was like slurring his words super bad when they left)
    Well I then get a notification on my phone later that day “Billie joe Armstrong of Green Day melts down on stage in Vegas, cancels remaining shows and is going to rehab” shit blew my mind lol so I am the one who brought him his drinks that night lol but I’m just a food runner I wasn’t gonna try and cut a rockstar off haha I think it was like 2014 but I still feel bad

    I get that their whole energy about their music is somewhat defensible given their age, but at the same time this is a band that's remained pretty creatively stagnant since 2004. Sure, they've had a return to some form with tracks like X-Kid and Revolution Radio, but tracks like that are insanely few and far between. And even then, it's like they've been stuck in some sort of reverse hyperbolic time chamber where they still think that singing about breakups and being a teenager is somehow... appropriate? For lack of a better word. It's not that those sorts of problems are invalid, everybody goes through that and there's mass appeal, I get that. But when the time came, they've never really stepped up to the plate and pushed their own envelope past American idiot. So much of their music in the last 10 years sounds like they're shuffling the deck or running in place. I know they're capable of tackling issues like depression, addiction, and anxiety, but they have an extreme tendency to shy away from that entirely now. And the musical package they envelope a lot of topics in that they cover currently doesn't hit the right notes. It seems disingenuous and emotionally bankrupt. It's sad to see considering 25 and 15 years ago, these guys had their hand on the pulse of an entire generation. Shame.

    13:30 - Releasing a bad, contractually-obligated album to troll their record company is precisely what Bob Dylan did with "Self Portrait". Also, to be a devil's advocate, wouldn't a legacy rock act using Max Martin and trap beats be the far more "How do you do, fellow kids?" gesture?

    I feel like Green Day have always been hated and most of the time for no reason. Like with Warning people just didn't like the change, even tho it was progressive for them and a pretty good album imo. But since the trilogy I feel like they've kept taking miss steps that they deserve to be called out for (maybe not this harshely, but still). While I hope they'll comeback with a truly good album, I also feel like it's not gonna happen and that it would sadly be better to just break-up the band.
    But I just love old Green Day so much!

    This is why Iron Maiden is objectively the most wholesome band. Those guys were BORN boomer. They were making music for boomers before 'boomer' was a meme. They've never had a downfall because they embodied that kind of energy from the start, so when they do boomer shit it's just good ol' classic Maiden that you know and love.

    Gun to my head, Green Day is probably my favorite band. I'm probably categorized as a boomer. I started listening to them when they released Kerplunk. I've tried sticking with them since American Idiot, but there's probably only a handful of songs since then that I like (that aren't covers). I've heard nothing good about the new album, so I'm kinda afraid to even listen. I find it maddening that they market it as being "real rock" when their last 5 albums have been severely over-produced. Their best effort was Demolicious, which took the best songs from the Uno-Dos-Tres disaster and stipped away all the nonsense. I wish they'd drop the act and act their age. They look and act so cringe, it's just embarrassing. So, while I still wear out their old music, I'd rather see them stop making music than continue what I hope is a charade to remain relevant to youth.

    I've been watching your channel forever, why have I JUST stumbled upon this video? I'm a huge Green Day fan... or I was? FOAMF was kind of the nail in the coffin for me tbh, although I agree wholeheartedly with your own feelings towards them. YES to absolutely everything, you summarized it so perfectly. I think it's really sad that Green Day always stood out for their clever and / or profound lyrics (even up until the trilogy, although it kinda sucked musically and, as you correctly said, would have been better as a single album) and now it's been reduced to "i have so much money i smoke crack for fame school sucks how do you do fellow kids".... I think RevRad was still great (I basically listened to Bang Bang non stop EXCLUSIVELY when it came out and to this day, Forever Now is one of my favorite songs of all time) but it also kinda lacked the lyrical genius that i always associated with Billie Joe. I have mourned who they were since pretty much since they released the coverart, now it's just... not the same anymore. I hope maybe in the future they will have a redemption that they deserve but this is not really a band I can love anymore. I used to be such a proud Green Day fan, driving my family and friends and colleages and classmates at college crazy with my obsession, I even MET Billie Joe and Mike and used to tell that story proudly and the memory always gave me so much joy.... and now there's just embarrassment. Anyway, thanks for the video and giving me an opportunity to rant lmao.

    I actually really like this album. It's got a great classic rock feeling. "Stab You In The Heart" is reminiscent of early Beatles material, their "Twist And Shout" days, if you will. "Grafitia" sounds like a song Tommy James & The Shondells could've made right alongside "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mony Mony". Also, "Meet Me On The Roof" is basically a song right out of the Monkees catalog, in between "Last Train To Clarksville" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday", with just a touch of "For Pete's Sake" thrown in for good measure. All in all, Father Of All Motherfuckers is a genuinely good album. It's the Green Day album for those who don't like pop-punk or Green Day.
