There are such things as legitimately produced replicas. For instance, in the late nineteenth century the British museum sold copies of rare ancient coins, such as the Syracuse Dekadrachm. It allowed collectors to at least have a copy of a coin they could never hope to afford..
Even today some of these replicas have value, with some fetching up to a thousand dollars. ...

Great video, Spegtacular! It's one of the best I have seen yet. It shows that even the best of them still get scammed. I got my first counterfeit over two months ago at the flea market I go to. I bought what was supposed to be a Mexican 1882 8 Reales from a guy for about $15. As soon as my coin dealer in the same flea market pulled his magnet out, the coin stuck like glue. All the other silver I bought from the guy was real, including a 2006 Silver Panda, so maybe, just maybe, he honestly didn't know about that one. One may say that I'm out $15. But, what I done was buy myself a teaching tool to show others for much cheaper than a school teacher pays for theirs.

The story I heard about the 1964 Peace Dollar, and I can't remember where I heard it is that the government recalled all the coins. Of course not all of them had been turned in, but the stipulation that they have on the coins is that if they turn up in circulation that they are to be considered stolen from the government. The department of the treasury or the secret service (I'm not sure which is in charge of currency) has jurisdiction. I wouldn't want to be in trouble with either of those agencies.

The Royal Canadian Mint did a pilot project they called "DNA" where every quarter minted was passed through a scanning machine. The computers created a separate file for each coin. We tried to fake out the machine by tossing coins that were already scanned. The system identified the coins correctly by pulling up the file specific to the coins that had been already scanned. Even told us the date they were scanned, and and the original operator's name.

30 years ago I worked in a teller line for a couple of years. It was a great place to find old coins and bills. Every couple of weeks a family would come in and deposit a large jar or bottle of coins that they had inherited from a deceased relative. I would leave a signed blank check in the counting room, and when they ran one of those jars, and rolled it, the girl in the commercial room would just fill in the amount of the coins on the check, and give me all the rolled coin in a sack. I would spend that evening unrolling those coins and inventorying the silver, the buffs, cents, et al. And then there was the bills. So many Silver certificates, U.S. notes, and even once, a $100.00 gold certificate. Collecting is still fun, but not as much as it was back then.

I’m a metal detectorist, which is where I get 99% of my coins. A few years ago, I was hunting a park in Oswego IL. and found an 1852 “Bank of Upper Canada” bank token, with a face value of 1/2 cent. It’s made of copper and it’s about the size of a US silver dollar. How the heck did that coin/token make it all the way to Illinois??? When they say that 50 cents was worth something, back then, I can believe it. It took a lot of time and materials to make a 1/2 cent coin. Learning the history of coins, and the history surrounding them, is the best part of coin collecting. It funny, because I hated history, while in school. Now that I’m holding it in my hand, I can’t get enough of it!
I have many other older and more valuable finds, but that one really stands out, due to its rarity. I almost missed it, too. I was quitting for the day and walking back to my truck. I saw an embankment of dirt, under a tree, and decided to swing the coil over it a few times. It was a small park and was very hunted-out. I didn’t expect to find anything. In fact, the friend who took me there, had hunted it on many occasions. I guess that no one ever considered to hit that one magic spot. Heck, even I almost didn’t.

I remember reading about Mary Shelly writing Frankenstein because of the "Year without a Summer" when I was in school but had forgotten about it. Cool. Just goes to show how much of an effect a really powerful Volcanic Eruption can have on the planet.

Way back in the 80s I was really into coins. Weekly trips with the folks to various flea markets around central FL (dad was stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa) netted my 99% complete books of Liberty dimes, Buffalo nickles, Lincoln pennies, Indian head pennies. Didn't know then what a key date was, other than certain ones were harder to get, like the 1916-D Liberty which I finally found in a loose change jug at a flea market in TX in 91. It was badly worn but the features were still legible. It was the only rare coin I ever bought before selling off what I did have. Just cause I had hunted that one particular coin for so long, anytime I see one in really nice condition, my BS meter goes into overdrive, regardless if it's authentic or not.

thank you for this lesson. I worked at a coin shop for 12 years and had fake coins come in. Like you said when the coins are rare dates, often in lower grades, be suspicious of China fakes, weigh them, inspect the rims, for casting marks.

    Coin guy knows everything.
They are getting so good at counterfeiting it is getting extremely difficult for us to find the. A novice can can just forget rinsing them. Especially when the actually DO make the silver and Gold fakes WITH silver and gold.

I can tell a fake bar if it's in my hands, but coins... you have to know your stuff!
