- With its 19 lenses, the Mantis, one of the world’s most powerful cameras, can capture cities and people in the big picture, and then drill down into extraordinary detail. This tool is now powering the Chinese surveillance state. Photo: Qilai Shen for The Wall Street Journal

Let's be honest. This is an advanced monitoring tool and it's certainly going to be used to destroy whatever is left of priva-see
AcctistaZ nope, it only monitors public places, would you put one in your home? I don’t think so. It just reinforces the idea that whatever you do in public is... public. It eliminates crime so why not install it.
"...having a camera that can capture everything is going to change our lives."
for better or worse though?
We all know the answer
Be the victim of a crime then try to tell people that the privacy of the suspects is paramount. Freedom from crime and total privacy are mutually exclusive.
earthcry for the better obviously... It reduces crime if not eliminates it. Some day it will be impossible to commit a crime and get away with it.
AcctistaZ better
The problem is more along the lines of what particular actions are deemed criminal, and what types of activities do we want caught on film, and stored in a database so that they can be retrieved.
How proud are you making a dictator reach his goals quicker
Lotfi KAZ China doesn’t have a dictator. Xi Jing Ping isn't quite powerful. The CPC has all the control. If they don't want Xi anymore they can just put him in jail.
How proud is he if he can find a murder just hours after the crime?
better than high crime rate in major US cities.
Man u r simply naive, dictator is a strong word. What makes u believe whichever government that ur country have is a democracy, is it because of its structure? Is it because of it’s elective nature? The world is not as simple as it seems. Rather than having a money driven and short-vision democratic government, I would prefer a stable, foreseeable, predictable government who has almost the same interest with most stakeholders in the country, at least the same core interests.
This is not usa the country of terrorists
*The memory storage requirements* for this camera will be insane.
This camera is good for landscape photography. Imagine the small details we can see in the landscape photo, if we had such a camera for personal use :-)

We've been dumping private information on Facebook for over 10 years. We've given over our shopping habits through loyalty cards for over 20 years. Surveillance cameras are thick as pigeons in a park in the UK for at least 30 years. Now we have AI that will tie all that together on anyone.
@@CarFreeSegnitz so correct; - but, even worse, - these 'companies' have surveillance (and computer record) your Personal Abdominal Emissions. local authorities and water companies are in (criminal) denial about this.

so true, these scumbags are enslaving the world,at some point their toys will have to be destroyed....chip companies etc are all complicit, maybe attack through the courts first, the people are not consenting to these or the use of resources for such.
it's scary, it's downright scary to think that whatever i am doing be it private or public is being watched, to live in that constant state of fear and anxiety is not something any human being should go through.
Since I assume a camera is pointed at me at all times this seems normal.
I am talking about the state of constant surveillance, yes in today's time where everyone is connected and everyone has a handheld live streaming device your point makes sense but a surveillance camera that's constantly watching over you 24*7 without your knowledge and your consent about your privacy is indeed scary, it's like someone hacking over my webcam without me knowing and recording every bit of my actions.
If you're outdoors then chances are you're on public property, and that means you cannot have any expectation of privacy. However this stuff is hardly new, the UK was the pretty much the first nation with mass CCTV surveillance.
Avantime Not the whole of UK...just London mainly...
That is still decades away .
Such technology to me is evil. It's not that the technology isn't great, it's what those who in power do with it. There will always be a few to take advantage of such a device, and use it for ulterior motives. Privacy is something most do NOT want to give up. Also there are satellite cameras that beats this camera by eons.
@Johannes 黄皇唱 ever heard of privacy?
@Johannes 黄皇唱 ah ok you are trolling
Just what we needed another tool for the police state.
re FLIPd and? What’s wrong with that? It only benefits law abiding citizens. Unless of course you are a criminal, then I see why this could possibly be a bad thing.
Give up the public masterbation and drinking buddy, it could hurt you when the cameras come.
Ninja1inblack ahh your liberal state of mind. What would be the sense in having a private conversation if it cant be private.
re FLIPd they can’t record your conversations, these are just cameras, not microphones. *facepalm*
I don’t speak for any political party, I only speak truth and facts.
+Ninja1inblack don't worry people have been listening to your conversations from thousands of miles away way before this came out it's called tapping
Bryant Zerrato you can't tap a line when talking in person. You can give up your rights to privacy, but I still want mine as do millions of others. So you can speak for yourself but not for anyone else.
This and AI...??? Scary stuff.
David Bradley is the unfortunate agent of evil. This is destruction.
Marius M nah it’s harmless, it only benefits law abiding citizens. Although considering how much you oppose it you must have broken a few to many laws, give up the public masterbation and drinking buddy.
"having a camera that can capture everything, is going to change our lives" - yeah, you can say that again...
How about no
Somehow, I think this technology could be "abused":
"Dissident, you can run but you can't hide!"
The name of the camera system is fitting. A mantis has not only compound eyes, but also spiky claws to guided by them.
Can you imagine live streaming the footage on youtube... people would watch 👀
if you must add background music please add subtitles
3:52 A gigapixel camera the size of a gopro ?? really !!!

Current model is the size of a basketball shoe box, in 4 years he said he will shrink it to a 10cm cube, for mid and low level model he said it possible to shrink it to a GoPro size.
However the current model seems to have 19 cameras ?
Porn will never be the same again
I guess NSA probably is having a fun time using something similar to this to watch the entire city of [insert an American city near you].
There is no point is bashing this guy. If he doesn't, someone will. You can't stop the future. It's up to us to restrict how it's used by governments because they will ALWAYS get their hands on the latest and greatest.
Seems they never worked on getting these security cameras down to the general consumer market. If they could have make a low cost implementation of it where a user can have 4-6 of those cameras, then it could be great for surveillance of the exterior of a house.
An overly eager entrepreneur forging digital shackles, to further enslave humanity...
As in same feild of cctv but u guys r way beyond rest .. super accomplished congrats n hope you get ur goals soon n let world see through u what the didn't seen yet ... congrats
The Chinese and American military already have this technology long ago! It was used mainly for military purposes. The technology has spread to civilian world. Just like GPS was used mainly to track US Navy ships. Now GPS is every where.
We also need privacy 🔏
we need safety more than privacy. actually we dont care about privacy in china at all ... lol. we support the system because it save life
Sachin Garhwal that’s why cameras are not installed in your home... But in public your actions are... public. It keeps people accountable.
Privacy is not real.
Not in China, you don’t
The Chinese don't care about privacy. Don't you watch SerpentZa on CZcams?
RIP CCTV cameras
When your girlfriend tells you have a stupid idea but you do it anyways.
This guy's passion for creation is severely overshadowed by his altruistic vision for how the technology will be used. RIP.

1:21 Video stitching leaves something to be desired. Doubling and overlap can be seen with the camera producer standing in front of the van.
in my neighborhood .. would not have noticed, but .. was dusk .. an intense quick flag of light as I walked up sidewalk , I looked & up on utility pole 15 yards + in front ..was a white hooded❓camera .. never saw or experienced anything like this flash before & I’ve walked this sidewalk my entire life ..
Interlacing images doesn’t require multiple cameras. Just a million iso rated camera so a fast shutter speed can be performed. There is an advantage to having a staggering angles of cameras but I’ve done it with just 1. It certainly puts computational power to the test and I found macs are able to handle it better because they throttle 1 of the cores for OS only where Microsoft systems don’t do this essentially performing a DOS attack on themselves.
Storing all the footage from the surveillance camera sounds like a pain in the a**
software.
Giant Asparagus moron
Camera really shrugged it's shoulders n said "idk, they all look the same boss"
For everyone freaking out this won’t allow any level of detail beyond what is capable with a normal telephoto lens. All this technology does is point one everywhere at once in a wider field of view.
Big brother is watching you and everyone you know.
The question isn’t whether you can it’s whether you should... we all know this technology is going to be abused

My camera even can not record right my mailbox
In my street we have a number of burglaries from cars to personal items. Some people in the neighbourood propose approaching everyone in the street to purchase a high quality cctv system that can be mounted well above the street covering all properties. Not such a bad idea providing the local council let us. Everyone on the street helps financially towards the system and possibly with Council subsidy. The police don't seem to want to get involved with burglaries because perhaps insurance covers it. THAT IS NOT THE POINT. Any way if neighbours want to do something with the increase in burglaries that need to help with the installation of a good quality camera system
finally i can wear my deadpool mask in public!!!😂

Even though people like to complain about having security. Surveillance is one of the biggest solvers of crime. In San Salvador the MS13 has terrorized and carelessly murdered hundreds of people. El Salvadors federal police created a CCTV program in San Salvador with hundreds of cameras placed variously in public. After that, significant amounts of arrests on gangs were made since there was now strong footage and evidence of crimes. And the cameras are watched in real time which means fast police response times and decreased criminal activity. Also perfect for subduing thieves.
