2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio review: aex.ae/2UDaOod
The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale has arrived. It's an Audi Q3-rivalling SUV that, in a first for the brand, will be available with plug-in hybrid power when it goes on sale in April - three years on from its concept debut. It carries over most of the show car's elegant styling, and Alfa has placed a big focus on the Tonale's interior quality, infotainment and connectivity, and promises strong performance from the plug-in hybrid version. But what's it like in the metal? Allow Nicola Hume to talk you through the Tonale's design, interior, engines and features in this first-look walkaround video.

The Alfa 75 was quite beautiful back in those days…
True, and much sexier then the lady in the video.
@@roby72s Face for radio x
Twin Spark Evolutione.
That's very true!
Boxy design was at it's peak in the 80s, and the 75 was just part of the fashion wave.
Agreed. I had a 75TS. Great car.
If you dont like the 75 and 166 than you are not a alfa lover🧐😂
This car is not a Renegade, it’s a Compass! And the 166 and the 75 were and are beautiful
How did she mange to get that wrong? Strange.
and the Renegade and Compass are Fiats lol.
I really hope this does well so we can continue to see that beautiful Alfa design language here in the states. Very engaging presenter too, hope to see her on more launches, she's got a good energy.
@Pugna they did with the stelvio and now theyre doing it again with the tonale
in the states and canada , we are getting it with a 2.0T 4-cylinder with 256hp and 295ft lbs . Not bad , its power is more than both a bmw x1 and gla250 .
And good looking
The Alfa 75 was a beautiful car!
Good on ya AutoExpress for getting her. Interesting preview. Hope the Tonale succeeds.
came here to say this. I liked the presenter a lot :)
Agreed!👍🏻..
The 166 is one of the most beautiful Salons ever built…
The 164 is downright perfect.....
Stunning bodywork and the Tonale isn't bad either
Love the leather
Creepy
I really hope Alfa decides to put those headlights in the next gen Giulia. I would seriously consider trading mine in for that cleaner front end design
They did it. You can already see spy photos of the Giulia and Stelvio restyling.
I always found the pre facelift 166 one of the prettiest sedans ever.
That's because it is and still looks beautiful pretty much from any angle, in this day and age.
That'll be my next car!
I heard that the 130BHP versions won't be released in the UK
Alfa have been making good cars for years and they're as reliable, or better than the German opposition
Finally someone well informed about cars...
Bought a Giulia Veloce early 2018. Drove 75000 km with it. Not a single issue (not even a little creak somewhere in the cabin, as you might experience with many French cars i.e.) and the car is simply brilliant dynamically speaking. That reliability thing has become complete BS on the latest ARs. But sadly it sticks. Wish you a lot of fun and emotions with your Tonale (SUVs are not at all my thing, so I won't go for it and will probably and sadly have to go for another brand that has the kit I'm looking for). Greetings from Belgium
Hopefully they reinvigorate their sales force too! As a long time Alfa owner and avid Alfisti who still owns a 3 litre Spider I tried 3 times to buy a Giulia between November 2021 and January of this year from the local dealer. They couldn't once send me a quote or give me an idea of price or even make the slightest effort to sell me a car. I ended up buying a car from another brand who actually wanted my business. Both Volvo and Lexus made the kind of effort that one would expect from a luxury brand. Even the local Abarth dealer was more interested in selling me a car than the Alfa sales people. No matter how good the product is without proper service it'll be more of the same.
And the award for star of the show goes to...... Nicola. Congratulations with the auto express gig 👌🏻
I'm sorry but you are wrong: Tonale is based on Jeep Compass, not Jeep Renegade, even if they should be similar. Anyway, Alfa engineers worked hard to give to the Tonale a superior driving pleasure.
“I’m 5’6” and have got plenty of room”… great benchmark…
😂
She's tall for an Italian girl. 😄
Harsh
🤣
Oh little Greg Greg your such a humorous scamp no wonder your such a popular little chap with all the chaps
Good review, and nice too see Nicola here, one of my most favourite car reviews on Auto Express is one hosted by Mat Watson, quite a few years ago.
This presenter is great! Put her on more often.
The 75 was my favorite when I was a kid.
Putting the shift paddles on the column rather than behind the wheel is a sign that they intended for them to actually be used.
My VW has them on the steering wheel which is nice until you’re turning in an intersection, about to grab second gear and realize the shift paddle isn’t where you expect it to be.
What a great, great review! Bravo and thanks!
Replacing the top-selling Giulietta with a niche crossover hybrid weighing nearly 2 tonnes that's no quicker, no more economical and yet costs a lot more, seats the same number of people and has less cargo space?
Yeah, great work Stellantis. This is exactly what Alfa Romeo should be building to win back customers en masse. If their target market is lobotomites it will be a tremendous success.
Crossover hybrids are selling like hot cakes all over the world at the moment, so yeah, may not be your cup of tea, but to become financially healthy again, like in the 156 era, they have done the right thing.
@@Av987 Given that the crossover is being outsold 4:1 by the hatchback in most manufacturers' ranges, I'd say no, they haven't.
As well as being environmentally irresponsible, dangerous, antisocial and polluting, these vehicles put the worst possible face on what should be a sporting brand. They put the worst face on the motor industry, period.
If they want to recapture past sales successes this is absolutely not the way to do it, and it's a great way to alienate your core customer base while you're at it.
I am so tired of this ridiculous notion that car manufacturers need to build SUVs to survive. It's not true, it's not supported by data and it's actively counter-productive to the brand strength and image of many manufacturers.
@@Strike86 completely agree. I own a Giulietta Speciale and I'm keeping it!
@@Strike86 Like it or not, car companies are ... companies. And companies are there to make money. And car companies make money greatly in part by selling cars. And there is plenty of data analysis to suggest SUV's sell more than any other type of vehicles (Coupes, sedans, hatchbacks), so if Alfa Romeo makes SUV's, it is expected to attract sales, you like it or not, which in turn will make the company be able to make money, which in turn will allow it to develop other less selling type of cars like.. you know, fun cars. So... why complain? If you support the brand so much, be happy on moves that will make them money, because they making money, will allow you to enjoy their brand more in the long run.
@@alejandroangel3103 See my first reply to Av987. The crossover/SUV market represents roughly 25% of new cars sold in Britain right now, so to say they're keeping car manufacturers alive just doesn't make sense. The largest market in Europe is still for C-segment hatchbacks. The Porsche fallacy gets trotted out a lot, but people forget that the Boxster saved Porsche, not the Cayenne.
Car manufacturers ARE pushing them, because they're easy to build on existing platforms and they can be marked up and sold as a 'premium' product for higher profits, but frankly I have moral arguments against building them at all. A pedestrian struck by an SUV is 2-3 times more likely to die of their injuries than one hit by a normal car, not to mention their incompatibility with smaller vehicles, and the waste of building a heavier vehicle using more materials that is then much less efficient over its life span. In today's climate that's insane, especially considering 95% of buyers have zero need for the supposed utility they offer.
Using Alfa Romeo as an example, they're hinting at a range of SUVs being developed in the next few years (including the Tonale) with no mention of any replacement for the Giulietta or any possible sports car (the GTV project was supposedly turned into the Maserati MC20). Sporting cars at Alfa Romeo should never be an afterthought, they should be a core product, but if SUVs are what sell then that's all they're going to build.
In all honesty if the only thing they're building is SUVs and crossovers then I don't feel they deserve to survive.
Hope this Tonale will put Alfa back up there so they can continue to produce more exciting models after the Guilia like a hatchback model, GTV, Spider .
Nice specification list, What’s this Tonale like to drive?
Ah I see the screen infotainment is a pop up screen 📺, guess the smooth integrated as in Guilia didn’t work in this.
Boring/pointless car, as any crossover. Will never understand why people buy these raised hatchbacks to always drive them on asphalt. A regular hatchback or a saloon/wagon makes a lot more sense, looks better, drives better and uses less fuel.
I like the presenter, but indirectly calling the Alfa 166 ugly is just....wrong. It's a beautiful car. Not among the most beautiful of Alfas but definitely a beautiful saloon.
More cargo space, easier entry and exit, fuel economy not much less these days than sedans, raise clearance a benefit in heavy snow. Crossovers are good one size fits all and cover more use cases than a sedan.
A very charming review with all the info you need, How refreshing good job Donna Intelligente.
Great car! Nice presentation. Thank you.
Excellent review
I enjoyed watching the Video Preview. The New Model that will become the biggest selling Alfa Romeo
This reviewer is charismatic and engaging. Can't help but enjoy the immense noise generated when she closed the door at 6.36 in the video in that studio!
Very nice review! However the point regarding the chassis is nott exactly correct: the Alfa romeo tonale chassis comes from the jeep compass, definitely not from the renegade which is 30 cm shorter.
Heyyy. I have facelift 156 and 166. Both good looking cars. This car looks fantastic.
its an alfa what did you expect?
The interior looks better than my 2018 Stelvio. I will need to get the new stelvio if and when they upgrade the interior
I quite enjoy your presentation!!! I don't care what car is being presented, as long as it is you, how refreshing.
Is this the Car Buyer channel? Am I in a different timeline?
Looks great. With lower suspension it could form the basis of an Alfa Romeo rival to the VW Golf, or even a new Lancia Delta?
Ambient lighting did not make it to UK on final spec listings unfortunately.
Hope goes well and hope the engine and all the parts are more reliable and excellent quality as beautiful design ....
Amazing review, Nicola does perfect reviews !!!!
Why was the tonale reveal not in my recommended feed. Its been over 2 weeks
if this was a plug in hybrid it would be game changer
Absolutely beautiful and i wish everyone buy this Tonale to support Alfa Romeo brand
It is NOT based on the Jeep Renegade, but on the Compass. The base is slightly different
For a modern car it does look really nice which I cannot say for many of the other large brands.
I live in the US and had for many years wanted a brand new Alfa. I was initially super excited when they returned to our country and thought I would definitely buy a Giulia when time came to get my next car. Then all the reliability issues in car magazines started popping up and had me a little worried. Nonetheless, I test drove a Giulia TI and though I enjoyed the performance (and loved the looks) - the check engine light was on in the brand new car I was test driving!!!
Alfa, if you are wondering why your sales are low (especially in the US- my city’s Alfa dealership actually closed), you have to make more reliable cars!
I wish my Stelvio had this interior!!
I do not! 😊
Its really pretty and that interior is miles better than the giulia or the stelvio. However, I can't help but feel like the power train is just a bit underwhelming. With both the giulia and the stelvio getting the 510HP twin turbo V6, I would have loved to see that engine make an appearance here considering how well it performed in the other cars. Maybe we will get it in a quadrifoglio version?
75 was one of the best cars in the 80s...i hate when young reporters are saying stupid things because the don’t know the history of the cars...and please update your humor the joke about the cars name in 2022 in a global internet channel is just insulting about Italian language and overall ridiculous
saying that the 166 is ugly is like saying the Tonale is something special in this market lol
I really like this car, not the usual SUV, seems promising, i wanna see it in person!
PS There are some promising rumor on "Quadrifoglio Verde" version!
If Alfa doesn't start advertising their cars on prime time television, and letting people know they have 0% financing for 48 months, they will NEVER survive in the US. Not to mention, my nearest dealer is 60 miles away... I had a Giulia Ti Sport for 4 years, loved it, no issues, but had to take a day off from work to get it serviced at the dealer when it needed it's routine maintenance done. I now own a BMW...
I was feeling the vibe until the 75 got mocked...
Everyone keep talking about the engines etc... With the gas prices going up like this, 130hp or 160 is perfect! The real challenge is reliability and ultimate ride quality/agility Alfa usually offers
Quick research and you will see that actual Alfas are reliable
220bhp at least
Actually alfas are more reliable than bmws and mercedes cars. They're pretty reliable Actually (not like invincible but most issues are cheap electrics) its just mostly a stereotype that alfas are unreliable because of the 90s
@@bourisb24yearsago11 alfa owner myself, I confirm what you say
@@bourisb24yearsago11 you can make a good or bad experience with any car brand. Yes Alfa is reliable but not more or less than its european competitors.
Nick are you not working for Carbuyer any more?!! I just fall in love with you! 😢
Someone should help the italians when naming cars, this will forever be called the "Toe Nail Eh"
I notice they’ve dropped the hidden rear Door handle?
That rear end is nice 👍🏻
It's a shame all the cars look the same inside nowadays.
Actually the 75 and 166 are great designs.
I'm not sold on the Tonale, it just doesn't look special enough. But then again to expect classic Alfa looks on a SUV bodystyle is asking the impossible.
The sooner the world is rid of SUVs the better imo
With you Rick. An engine like the one in the alfa stelvio quadrifoglio needs to be in a sports car only not a family SUV
If Alfa had made Giulia estate, they would stand very good now..
as usual the front end is beautiful, just depends on the rest XD
People that choose a Mercedes C-klass / E-klass, BMW 3 / 4-series or Audi A4, A5 over the Giulia has misunderstood the pleasure of driving.
She reminds me of Nina conte, great review by the way and what a stunning car
As a current Alfa owner, I really don’t like this vehicle. It is very much a cheapened version soccer mom car. I love my Giulia, but I don’t know if the tonale will bring the Alfa brand to life. If the Giulia didn’t do it, this definitely won’t. However I hope it does.
Oh no that name association has done it for me!
Alfa lease deals are just terrible!! They wanted $5K down and $700 month for a $50K car?!?!?!
I like it!
Is that Nicola I see?
Yes...she is quite sexy in tights😍
Lolol at "toenail" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Alfa is underrated. At least here in Sweden. Pretty much everyone talks down on the brand
"The car to FINALLY save Alfa?"
Excuse me but Giulia and Stelvio did pretty well
They didnt sell very well. Absolutley great cats but sales numbers are quite poor...
They did not, sales are non-existent. People are not stupid, for the price they go German, or even Asian (eg. Lexus).
@@RobertSmith-up9rz I must be stupid then: I bought a Giulia early 2018 and had no issues. My colleague, way more clever that I will ever be, bought a Class C Mercedes. Considering what she had to go true, I may very well have gained a few points on my evaluation. (Yes, this is 100% sarcastic) To be totally honest, the Tonale will NOT be a commercial game changer. It comes too late in a market flooded with SUVs and with no real technical USP, except being an AR (and that works only on Alfisti). Moreover, the SUV trend is already slowing down: too heavy, too bulky, too thirsty, too expensive (including on a taxation level in many countries). Challenging times ahead and SUVs will proove be more of a problem than a solution and once manufacturers will feel the heat, the dies will start rolling...
@@guywerb I really hope that the Tonale will get Alfa the sales it needs because it's clearly a car made to generate as much profit as possbile...even Alfa has to do this just to make sure it survives and keeps doing cars "meant for soul" as i like to say. The germans have great cars too, but when you drive an Alfa it's just so beautiful and gives you so many emotions. Italians have always been underrated in many industries including car manufacturing
Praying for a Quadrifoglio
Looks fantastic.
Magnifique,classe à l'italiana
166 is amazing (kinda).
We ignore the 166 and the 75..... 😭
Nice job Alfa...arriving in Australia at $55k next year. Terrific interior, hopefully it will be reliable. Good revierer as well!!
If they could only sort out the reliability of their cars. Does not need to be Toyota level reliability.
Dont worry reliability just always remember do maintenance frequently baby the car like another child.
ALFA ROMEO YOU LISTENED BUT THIS ISNT AMBIENT LIGHTING IT IS ONLY 25% NEED SOME ON THE SIDES/FLOOR SIDES & BACK SEATS TO COMPLETE THE CAR LIGHTING
Alfa romeo should make Pininfarina concept spider to save the brand..
Alfa most selling car is spider.. not another budget, boring SUV
Where is a great design, like: 33 stradale, brera, 147 gta, 8c, etc...
so, it's a car that so perfect. not even one bad thing to mention? car reviewer or auto dealership commercial ads?
It will... At the right price point.
Its based on the Compass platform not renegade....
I was going to buy a Guilia. But the dealers were rubbish and if I’m spending that much money I want more than that.
Strange for a car company to bring out a new model of car. We are still seeing 8 year old Passat, 7 year old Audi Q5, A4 beeing offered. That is why I went with Tesla 3 long range. Car companys are all into EV transformation and not old style new model diesel cars.
coooooool, and the car is not bad
They've realised that letting Fiat get too involved with the design process means you're left with a crap fiat hidden under an alfa badge. They're doing it themselves again now & since then they've been pumping out good cars! I expect this is gonna be no different
the ceo of the stelantis group carlos tavares said last chance for alfa romeo. let s hope for a good outcome for the brand
i have a 2014 Giulietta right now. ill get a Tonale when its 2-3 years old, to get it for cheaper.
Stopped watching when she said the 166 was ugly
Tye interior of Alfa's are always a let down for me, but this is really excellent. Hopefully it sways people away from the German rivals. Also thought the presenter did a great job.
Get inside Alfa Romeo Brera from 2005, so ahead of it's time the exterior design is still a headturner even today,
Great new Alfa SUV....Tonale ti amo!
God the wheels are stunning, you just know there ALFA it's a nice looking motor great colour, if the price is right then it's a good car, come on Alfa you have pedigree and history, love the hot presenter bit of class
The price won't be 'right', it'll be much more expensive than the Jeep Compass it is based on, because Alfa always price themselves out of their market.
At last! A delightful Female presenting a new car!!!
This host is mindblowing. Baam! 💥👌
This car is actually based on the platform of the Jeep Compass, not the Renegade.
the only problem with Alfa's cars are german cars that over the past decades became very popular, became the main point of reference and a status symbol. Alfa makes great products but they cost as much as a german car so customers would simply prefer going with the german option.
Really want to buy an ALFA but just too many horror stories with reliability.
I need a car to start, go and cost as little as possible to maintain. Great design and handling means nothing while waiting for a tow truck.
If, and its a big if, Alfa can show its cars are more that pretty garage queens then I will take the plunge.
I have classic Japanese motorcycles to ride on an sunny day if I want fun.
I've owned an Alfa Mito for 7 years now never let me down zero faults! Alfa Romeo steel have been fully galvanised since 1988! I would say take the plunge life is too short to driving a boring Japanese car! Italian cars bring a different dimension to your life more than just A to B but a deeper relationship connection to the car that makes you feel so good about your driving.
those reliability issues are long gone otherwise alfa wouldnt exist, ive had 147, 156, 159 all used with little or no issues at all, do your self a favor and buy a car with soul and character...youll never look back
Renegade? They couldn't even use the Cherokee or higher models for your money?
The legendary Alfa Romeo Toenail
lol she said it! 😂
This would have been a great release in 2015.
It will sell well..
Alfa 75 was a great car!
100 percent. I lol when she said ugly
