- A playthrough of LJN's 1993 license-based platformer for the NES, Alien³.
Alien³ on the NES, like every other Alien³ game, doesn't follow the movie particularly closely. Of course, it'd be difficult to make a run-and-gun action game when you only had one enemy, but I did feel like this structure would've been a bit more aptly applied to Aliens than Alien³.
The whole game has you controlling Lt. Ellen Ripley, lone-survivor of both the Nostromo and colony LV-426 incidents, after she has crash landed on a remote planet used as a maximum security prison.
Instead of directly dealing with the plot of the movie, though, Alien³ has Ripley running around different areas of the complex searching for and rescuing captured survivors.
(Let's all conveniently ignore the fact that everyone captured by the aliens would have been 'impregnated,' and thus unable to be saved, Ripley included.)
The stages are absolutely massive, and most have several paths that can be taken throughout. Some lead to the prisoners, some to hidden power-up caches, and others to dead-ends. There's a lot of ground to explore, and not much time to do it in - there's a time limit set for every stage, and if you don't get to all of the survivors before that limit is reached... well, you can imagine what happens.
I liked a lot of things about this game. I thought the graphics, though a bit drab in their unrelenting shades of maroon, teal, and neon green, nicely set the tone, and there is some surprisingly good detail work and a fair bit of gross imagery to be found in the backgrounds.
And Jeroen Tel's soundtrack alone is worth playing the game for. So atmospheric!
The gameplay is done well, but it's plagued by one fatal design flaw: the time limit. The levels are huge and you aren't provided a map - they require exploration, careful resource management, and planning. The problem is that you are barely given enough time to complete the stage, even if you know where everything is. Missing a single jump can leave Ripley unable to finish the stage in time, and it requires an insane amount of patience to play each stage enough times to figure out where everything is, the most efficient route to hit the required objectives, and how to deal with each of the enemies without running out of ammo or being killed. If the game had removed the time limit - or had at least extended it by a substantial amount - this would be an excellent game. As it is, it is not. It's still far better than most LJN-published trash, but Probe side-stepped this issue in the well-regarded Sega Genesis game, so why brutalize the NES fans so badly?
In order to finish it, I had to map out on graph-paper most of the areas through endless trial-and-error runs, and still, just look at how little time I had left at the end of each stage! It's completely absurd.
It is fun to chuck Ripley down staircases, though. And if you have a Game Genie and a code to disable that timer, you'll probably have a good time with the game.
Alien³ on the NES strikes an impressively somber and oppressive tone similar to the movie's, and the gameplay is enjoyable. It's just so disappointing that a single design decision compromised the entire experience. I still enjoyed it, but it had the potential to be something much more.

This game was unsolvable labyrinth of my childhood
mate, I know the feeling; but a friend of mine at the time (Teodor), he was able to beat it. beginning to end, no saves, no save states... analogue knock-off hardware, he beat it, and I was there to witness it.
@@JulianThursday13 the way i beat the game was by first searching for the tunnels and making a map on paper with directions to exit.Ofc it took me a lot to learn the locations of prisoners and the other stuff
This game is like a time managing speed run. You got to know the map and take the most efficient path.
I was the game master of my neighbourhood. Guys used to come to me with new games and I used to play them and tell them how to finish them. But this game got the best of me....and I'm glad.
Had a friend like that in school, he finished most games before the rest of us did, and would always be telling us about it; however, I do remember that I finished River City Ransom before he did.
My mother and I spent hours terrifired and frustrated, trying to find all the people. Man nostalgia and that music 😂❤ Thank you for playing the game!
I absolutely LOVE the music in this game!
I do to!! Where do you think we can obtain the soundtrack?
High Priestess www.zophar.net/music/nintendo-nes-nsf/alien-3 Right here :)
That soundtrack was ✅ by Jeroen Tel, one-half of Maniacs of Noise with Charles Deenen. Other composers at Probe included Stephen Collett (a.k.a. Steve Rockett), Nicholas Stroud, Matthew Furniss, Allister Brimble, Simon Robertson, Stephen Root and Andrew Brock.
I remember this game being one of the few games my dad liked. He would actually take turns playing with me and my brother.
Alien3 was almost an excellent platformer. It has an amazing soundtrack, moody graphics, good controls...
...and a ridiculous time limit that all but ruins the entire experience.
Good controls? B and A are swapped!
@@amso7169 It's not that hard to get used to, though. Iirc there were a few NES games that used B for jump instead of A.
NintendoComplete
That’s true. (Looking at you, Data East games.)
What exactly happens if time runs out?
@@windslicer4130 As I recall the kid aliens are born from prisoners and you lose one try.
Best music from NES games 👍
Man, you weren't kidding when you said the timer was unforgiving.
(I haven't played it--but I watched this, so I'll take your word for it. Those time limits were just merciless. Some stages you were cutting it close in completing.)
I had nightmares after playing this game when I first played it xD The music was chilling and gives me chills even now xD
The music in this game has the exact same tone as nightmare on elm street. BOTH LJN. I like em both too.
This and Castelvania Simon's quest - Nightmares of our childhood.
The ending made me laugh just cause it has a slightly condescending "you win, yay" vibe to it.
ew, its awful
15:07 = Epicness
i love the music this game
Из России, с любовью! Это игра моего детства, много играл в нее! Спасибо за классное прохождение! Ты лучший!
What amazes me is how they managed to incorporate so many levels, with unique designs, music in just a simple 5 inch cartridge 😍
Same goes for the DS , switch, and PSP games
Aliens are pretty capable
You do the lords work playing and finishing games i couldnt as a kid. Love the fmv videos..hellcab was my introduction to playing them
Just the Tip Oh man, Hellcab :) it was one of my first too. I still do from time-to-time look for any good old 90s FMV games that I might not have played yet. Any suggestions?
I think this is mildly funny, so I'll share it:
When I first played this game (well, the SNES one, at least), I only really knew the Alien movies by osmosis; what I gleaned from pop culture and references in other movies, video games, and cartoons and stuff. I didn't know many details outside of the facehugger, the eggs, chest bursting, a bald, female main character (didn't realize she was only bald in 3), and that awesome HR Giger design. When you die in the SNES (and I presume the Genesis) version of the game, a voice sample of Bill Paxton's character from Aliens says "game over, man!" at the game over screen. This bewildered me and I thought it was so funny that I started saying it whenever I died in ANY game. I thought it was so funny and so strange, a non-sequitur before I knew what that was and just that I knew I liked them. Later on in life I realized what it was in reference to and had a good laugh over it. Sometimes ignorance can be really funny.
Gameplay on the SNES version is so much better. No time limits. Bigger levels. You can choose your mission. All around a superior choice.
Oh and of course six action buttons are much better than 2 action buttons.
This game was difficult like the good games used to be back in the days. I don't think I was ever able to go through 1st level as a child.
Yeah this game used to scare the shit out of me 😂
Jereon Tel = AWESOME. Agony and Myth? Hell yes, fantastic composer. Right up there with Huelsbeck and the Follins.
Alien3 the game? Eeeeewwww. Honestly can't believe you finished this one. Good god, I gave up on like the 2nd level.
Dorelaxen It was painful mapping out those later stages
I didn't even know there was an NES version. I remember renting the SNES version and having a decent time with it. I was old enough that its inconsistency with the movie didn't really bother me. I remember the gameplay growing stale over time, but the initial concepts were pretty interesting for the time, I thought.
But I doubt I'd ever play it again.
I was like 4 when I played it and I remember being scared to play it everytime.
Love the music
Me and my friend played this game when we were teens. Only beat it when we mapped out all the prisoners and how to get to them asap otherwise the time ran out or you didn’t save all the prisoners and the exit was closed
Broooooo the nostalgia is hitting me hard 😢
0:49 That's how quickly the actual movie would have been over if Ripley had a pulse rifle
I used to draw maps to win this game and it sure helped! great game👍
1:08 Yep, totally realistic, I have nasty falls like that, then get up and keep going, completely unfazed by what just happened.
back then this game is a big headache since it has very little room for error,i remember finished this game once when i stay overnight during summer with friends helping remember hostages position, yep only once since it's really difficult and never finished again by myself,it has huge potential to be developed as metroidvania i guess
One of the most underrated LJN Games.. I loved it!!! (^3^)
I admire my sister because I was 10 years and she was 14 at that time and she beat this game without any trick or looking tips somewhere else... that's my frustation I couldn't lol.
A+ for 👽 3, if you asked me truly personally.
I played that game as a kid as well. Amazing how you picked up the paths where you didn't meet any eggs and these infesting creatures. I didn't saw any through your entire playthrough!
I had it pretty meticulously mapped out because otherwise I got killed constantly by the timer.
AVGN made a good point about the scrolling in this one. Why do you have to be so far to the side of the screen to make it scroll? Hate when games do that. And they reversed the Attack and Jump buttons.
Sometimes falling down a staircase or two was necessary for saving time.
So what exactly does Ripley do with these prisoners? I always wondered.
Good ol slicing dicing, bro.
thank you bro great job fantastic game is alıen and nes years..🥺👏🤜💪👍👊🤛
Gracias hermano gracias a ti pude pasarlo , es muy dificile para mi,, ya queria dejarlo ,, con tu video me ayudo mucho
I'm sure that this game was initially designed with no restriction to exit without all prisoners being rescued. Why would they count them after each level as a "bonus"?
First game to ever feature a falling down stairs mechanic.
She was impregnated by the alien while she was in cryosleep before arriving on Fury 161, so... stairs are the cheap option if she wasn't feeling it, I guess? Probably better than letting the morphine addict have at her internals.
1:10 "They are just blue balls"
That music in Boss 2, is sound so familiar.
Саундрек на первом уровне просто бомбический
That game was so hard to me when i was 7 .
One of my favourite games of all time!
Why no explain how to get those items on top... 2:35
Alll I can think(even not being a real fan of)is Metroid..what with the maze of level layers. Good memory needed for sure.
T obe hoonest, i pick the mastersystem version.
This is one slappin' ass soundtrack, though, gotta say.
Alien Isolation of my times 😅
9:14 what is THAT even supposed to be?
Main Menu music is stuck with me
you have the alien 3 for super nintendo?
Aaagh Ive been playing Mega Man too much and cant get used to NOT being able to jump of ladders.
LJN = Laughing Joking Numbnuts!
Kurtis Rinker: More like Lazy Jam Nation.
Kurtis Rinker at least they made good toys. Games, not so much.
"Inspired by Dracula"
Can you do the other versions?
October 27, 2019
Do you mean like the other unique games based on Alien3, or do you mean this version of it on other systems?
@@NintendoComplete
Both.
Я дальше 3 уровня в детстве ни разу не проходил
Why even call it alien 3 when they changed the story almost completely, haha...
Muy difícil..
Game was such a cash grab. Show the true ending where she throws herself in the molten metal
Super Nintendo version.
Never managed to finish it because of this stupid timer. 😂
Ugh. Yeah, this is an LJN game, all right. XD I find it rather ugly by NES standards. I guess it looks okay. Music's pretty cool, I gotta say. It might actually be one of LJN's better games. lol
Looks like 144fps was invented already back then.
I don't think you understand what framerate is.
The master system version was better.
*Genesis
@@Alej4nowell that was 16bit. In the 8bit league the master system version of this game was superior.
Genesis is better
