remakes are different to remasters, remasters are usually the same game with just smoother frames and textures but the same controls and crappy camera from the original and mostly they suck ass, remakes are a new game on a new engine with the original story and characters, so if MGS gets a REMAKE yes it will be awesome, but if its REMASTERED then it will be as annoying to play as the original and i'm going to hear snake going AAAAHHHHH! followed by SNAKE! SNAAAKEEE! 1000 times before finishing it

It's meant to be a low budget remaster.
Plus playing these games on a modern 4k tv.

I played it. Remaster is not terrible. If you were enough patient you will find that controls can be changed from tank to modern.

Right on my man. Stick to the gog versions or steam versions you can get on sale for a dollar each. This is basically them with upscaled textures. Look what the Crash and Spyro trilogy gave us= a reason to play these classics again. This is sad af. Lol with the animal farm commentary. You are a people's champion.
It's not upscaled, but yeah it's basically HD texture packs and high-poly Lara and monsters. It does also improve the controls to be more modern.

Thanks for the straight up review. Glad I didn't buy it; bummer the modern controls suck. I have Tomb raider 1-2 PS1 downloaded on my PS3. I could never get into these games. The Tank controls suck and it is seriously painful to play. ALOT of PS1 games aged horribly.; even some PS2.
As a 36 yr old gamer who's played alot of games (Recent-classic/retro) from The last of Us part 2, Doom Eternal, and latest Hitman trilogy and so on......why would anyone want to play games that aged really badly. Nostalgia is usually never enough LoL. My main console is PS4 Pro w/ SSD upgrade; till I get a PS5 Pro.

This game is "overhyped" because Tomb Raider has been trash for a decade with these dumb cover shooters that should have been an entirely new IP. Classic Tomb Raider is back so we want to encourage Core Design to produce better games that are actually TR games. These remasters are a first step

At first I had the same visceral, "Ugh, yet another corporate cashgrab on nostalgia" reaction you did, but honestly in this case, it's kind of justified. Have you played the original Tomb Raider's? They don't hold up. And I'm not talking about graphics. I really don't care about the updated graphics. The controls, specifically for jumping are just annoying to play through. So this remaster doesn't just update the graphics--and does a fairly good job at that give they're working within limitation of the original engine--it also updates the controls to reduce a lot of that frustration.
Did it need to exist though? Hell no. There's no reason to play the original Tomb Raider, unless you're interested in the historical aspect, when TR: Anniversary exists. There's still no reason to play the remaster, because again, the 2007 remake is still going to be far superior.
This remaster is really for the die hard fans who've already played all the Tomb Raiders. This lets them re-experience their favorite old school games without a lot of the frustration from the controls that is harder to put up with nowadays.

Completely agree with you. I refunded after a few hours, somehow the devs managed to make the camera worse than the original. I have gone back to playing the original TR from '96 and the gameplay is much better. I didn't care much for the graphics, I still think the original TR's graphics are beautiful. The remaster felt more like a novelty or gimmick with far too many silly, pointless achievements.

The fact that TR1 remaster exists tells me that corporate game development is totally dead and they can't come up with anything new, or create any new lovable characters.
Edit since misunderstood comment: The TR remaster is freaking amazing, and looks perfect, plays perfect, and I can re-live my Tomb Raider childhood again since my old CD's don't even run on modern systems now. BUT. the remaster only exists because modern game design can't deliver a good experience and we have to go back to 1995 to remaster an experience that is still relevant 20 years later, and that is better than current day experiences. That says a lot.

We have to remaster old games from 1995 because they are so much better than anything that came out recently. In an ideal world, the "new" tomb raiders would have been so amazing that we didn't need a remaster.
