Brave Writer Dart Update 2nd & 3rd grade + In Depth Look At How We Use The Dart

- Using Brave Writer Dart Literature Guides has been a highlight for me in our homeschool over the last two years! We've enjoyed so many books together and both the kids and I have learned a lot.
But Brave Writer is more of a lifestyle of language arts and it's not your traditional workbook type curriculum. In fact, there are no worksheets! I'm trusting the process and enjoying being curled up on the couch with a book and my kids as we learn in this very laid back type of way.
In this video I'll share how the Darts have been going, fears and struggles we've had, if we'll continue them, and I'll walk through the entire Wishtree Dart week by week. You'll see how I break it down and how everything relates back to the copywork passage.

Yes I’d say 3-4 times a week. If the content is easier or something they’ve seen before it’s 3 days, other weeks we might divide it into 4 days. Usually no more than about 10-15 minutes.

I’m trying to prep using this program for my soon to be 4th grader next school year and a little overwhelmed! How much time would you say you spend each day reading from the book or does it give a breakdown of what should be read that I may have looked over? Thank you in advance!
Do you mean the book from the library or the book guide with grammar inside? We aim to read a chapter a day (often more if it's good). Some people try and read up to the copywork passage before doing copywork (page numbers are in the guide next to the copywork)....but we don't bother anymore. If we haven't gotten to that spot in the book when they do the copywork, then we do it anyways and I can see the lightbulb go on when they recognize the passage while I'm reading it later!
Hi! Curious, will yall continue grammar every year or take breaks? I recently heard more of a Charlotte Mason's approach of doing it once in elementary, once in middle, and maybe a couple of times in high-school.
My boys are just 5 and 3 so not starting grammar yet, but Dart has always been on my list.
For now I’m planning on using these each year, mainly because I love the books and the gentle way the guides help point out grammar.
Do they give you an idea of which chapters to complete for each week? Or how do you decide how much to read each week?
Each week the new copywork passage has a page number on it, so you’ll be able to see what page you’ll have to read up to to get to that spot. However, I don’t worry if we’ve read it yet or not, we just aim to read a chapter or so a day and if we do copywork before we get to it (that happened a few weeks ago for us), then when we do read it my kids point it out in the reading like “we’ve heard this part before!”
Hi…I’m planning to start Brave writer for my 3rd grader. We’re doing lightning literature that my son loves especially the book selection and reading comprehension. Does Brave writer has reading comprehension question in the curriculum to go with read aloud.
There’s no reading comprehension list in here, but there are “big juicy questions” to go over each week to foster conversations about the book.
@@LizBlueandHazel can you explain more about “big juicy questions”. Are they related to the book or if possible can you give some examples for me to figure it out. Thank you!

Realize it covered so many literary devices and grammar. This actually seems thorough without being tedious. I have chosen curriculum you described on your blog before and now I want to follow you on this one too!
We still use these! I do think they’re a bit awkward to start with, so I’d get 2 because the first one will feel choppy and the 2nd will be better. I’d also recommend a small whiteboard or something to write out the weekly passage on since so much of the grammar refers back to the passage. I find it’s easier to have it written where both kids can see than to keep flipping back to the copywork page. Also, don’t worry about the pace of reading. We now just read at our own pace and it’s less stressful than trying to make sure we’ve gotten to a certain page number by the next week. Have fun with it. Thanks for watching!
